I thought it would be fun to take concept or essence of a desert oasis and shrink it down to a tiny size. Using various items that fit the theme, I created something that I think does exactly that. As you know, I typically do jungle style tanks, so it's always fun do something a little different, like this.

I thought it would be a lot of fun to take the concept/essence of a desert oasis and shrink it down into a mini setup. I had a lot more fun with this project than I expected, and I love the result. What do you think, though? Let me know, and have a great Sunday SerpaSquad!

I got really excited when I saw the thumbnail 🙂 For about 6/7 years I have some cacti and succulents growing in a cheap discarded fish tank. Just some big stones at the bottom for drainage, some soil and white sand, couple of smaller stones and a wooden cover to prevent my cat from doing stupid things. Didn't really know what I was doing at the time so every time I check it I'm still surprised to see how well everything is growing. Got in a couple of cacti grown from seeds that are now about 20 cm in height. Have to start thinking about a version 2 now. Edit: forgot to tell you I wouldn't mind more of these builds 🙂

I have encountered natural springs in the Sonoran Desert (which is part of the native range for a lot of cholla cactus species, where we get cholla wood from). The one I liked visiting the most was shaded with mesquite trees and was the only place where I saw green grasses and mosses during 119F heat waves. The springs were covered in algae and mosses. There actually weren't a whole lot of cactuses near the streams, like because their roots couldn't take the level of moisture. That being said, this was still a neat build!

A year ago I went away to visit family and left my red cherry shrimp in the hands of my mother in law, after 1 week I came home to 50+ dead and all but 7 remaining. I quickly removed them and restarted the tank, I have over 200 now with more on the way from that same colony. I love these little guys so much, they are so resilient and fun to watch. Thank you for the inspiration! Gives me an excuse to get another tank going :)

Man, this is a piece of art! A suggestion for a future build: you may do a desert pond like this one but with tadpole shrimps and a way to drain the water periodically, when it comes back the eggs of the shrimps will hatch and the cicle will restart.

It looks awesome - I'd think that the air humidity in the tank - due to the waterfall - might be a bit high for more sensitive desert plants. I still love to see a similar built done for desert reptiles though. Ensuring the necessary water feature looks interesting in a desert terrarium is hard to do - I think.

It looks gorgeous, but I feel like a real opportunity was missed to include Triops in a build. They are native to arid regions, and their eggs can remain dried out for decades, then when rain finally does return... These tiny alien looking crustaceans hatch, grow, and reproduce like nothing happened. Would have been perfect for a desert oasis, but I fully understand using the shrimp that you already had.

@@Meskarune There are two different plants that are commonly sold as dinosaur plants. The one that he has is actually evolved to tumbleweed around until / unless it finds water. I know less about the other species, but perhaps that is the one that is meant to have consistently buried roots and water? This one is not.
