It has been an exciting few weeks here at the Zoo with 2 new Livingstone's Fruit bat babies and just enough of a dry spell to get our new Serval exhibit on-show.

So much change again! It was so hard deciding which photograph I liked most out of the 10 so don't know how you managed to reduce it to even 10! Can't wait to visit again after the Easter holidays when its quieter again!

Love the bat pups. I wonder what would happen if another specie of bat was introduced to your aviary? In Australia the flying-fox species seem to co-exist, and there is the chance of hybrids with the black and the grey headed. I guess that would be a bad idea if your main goal was to increase their numbers. Please more bat videos...they are adorable!

The bat videos are critically important. When I first began following bat videos I learned bats cannot fly off the ground and the basic mechanics of why they cannot; that the bats "wing" is almost structurally, identical to our human arm and hand, one bone difference; and how important for people to see bats close and realize they are furry mammals. Labrador retrieves have webbing in the paws as water retrieving dogs; platypus has webbed feet, ducts and other birds have have webbing, as do bats. I was surprised at how few defenses bats have against predators and humans--the "big wing" defense. Keep educating us.

The Australian Flying-Fox species don't seem to routinely look after pups that belong to other mothers but they do occasionally adopt orphans when in captivity. In the wild , if a pup drops from it's mother , the mother will come back and look for the lost pup on subsequent evenings and she may be accompanied by "aunties" who help search for the pup.
