Love from Louisiana, USA! I got recommended your channel a few months ago and have been watching every video since 😁 My favorite animals/creatures at your zoo are the bats and leaf cutter ants! If I'm ever lucky enough to be in the UK, y'all are at the top of my list 💜

Thankyou for the tour videos, I can’t wait to pay a visit from Sheffield soon! Would you be able to take in racoons from other zoo’s at all or does it really mean, once they sadly pass on, there will be no more? Interesting facts about the invasive species in the UK!
@NorthumberlandZoo5 күн бұрын
Sadly Raccoons can’t be bred in the UK at all so that includes Zoos. There is also a ban from Europe too, so once they are gone they are gone ☹️ glad you enjoyed the tour!

Not sure if you know but the volume keeps going super quiet. Scavenger hung sounds amazing but I usually visit through the week not the weekend, will it be around for a week or so after too please? So many people unfortunately do harm by doing what they think is being kind, so thankyou for spreading awareness too! I'm jealous of the goats play stuff 😂 I noticed the fawn without spots when it was still tiny, is it a common thing to happen? I remember when Winston was a baby in what is now the native species building! I love hearing about the individual animals, I feel like I know them all as I visit so often, but at the same time don't really know them if that makes sense.

It was a windy day today when filming, the gopro struggled a bit with noise! I’ll ask the question re Guinea Pig weekend and let you know! Feeding grass is a neverending problem.. people still don’t read those bigger signs wither 😐 glad you enjoyed the tour!

@@NorthumberlandZoo I think it might have been my headphones connection too making it quiet cause when I twiddled them it was better and I was meant to take that part of the comment off but I forgot 🤣 My pony's field is on a public foot path and I've have to have 4 different kinds of signs made gradually getting bigger too. And still I've had to speak to people and ask them not to and try explain. Thankyou for asking about the guineapig activity too :)

I was there today and almost all the piggies were out! In the stables, the barbers, on the mine, in the veg patch, they were everywhere!! It was astonishing. Super cute. It’s fascinating how absolutely every one not only has a unique colouration, but the length of their fur (hair?) the style of their fur - they’re all so different! One of them looked like a Donald Trump wig in the grass! Outstanding😂 I’ve seen people feeding clumps of grass to farm animals at Beamish. I always tell them off, get loads of abuse back, sometimes it gets nasty with aggro alpha male chav dads who really should educate themselves! I wish they had such signs at Beamish!!

Everyone knows better 😕 it’s hard sometimes but know that you are doing the right thing! People still feed ours even with the new signs 😞 the guinea pigs are getting so confident now! 😬

Was hoping to visit in August on my way from Stranraer (I think that's the ferry terminal - no passport so was intending to drive to the north, cross and drive south past yourselves) down to Norfolk for a steam engine weekend but having looked at the long range weather forecast I think I'll give Fota a try instead (I'm in Kildare so much closer to me as well) and will try and plan a visit to yourselves (and a steam engine festival) next year when hopefully the weather won't be either raining or so hot I'm not going outside in it. In the meantime your videos are very much enjoyed here in Kildare.

I think that IF the lynx were released quietly in a location kept quiet from the public nobody would ever know. Especially as they aren't a lot larger than the Scottish wildcat OR the domestic maine coon or Norwegian forest cats which are fairly large but aren't known for attacking people or other pets.
@LouciferFlump7 күн бұрын
Also, I LOVE the parrot aviary! I love whistling at them, with them. I visit their enclosure several times per visit to interact with them. They’re so sweet and fun.
@LouciferFlump7 күн бұрын
I remember a very long time ago, when I was little, Edinburgh Zoo had a snow leopard in a dreadful small, boring enclosure. I wonder now how they were ever allowed to have it, kept in such conditions?! Chester Zoo now have Snowies, but your enclosure and private sleeping areas are FAR superior. You’ve given the snow ladies a beautiful home. I love seeing both of them, they’re wonderful! I dunno how I feel about the lynx….I’m envious of countries where people have footage a casual bear or an alligator, just mooching about! It’s so cool, but I think your average, small-minded Brit would have a major panic attack about the very *thought* of lynx being loose. I mean, some people still have reservations about beavers even!! 🤦🏻♀️🥴
@ABC1701A6 күн бұрын
The Eurasian lynx isn't huge, especially in comparison to the Scottish wildcat -a protected species - or even a Norwegian forest cat or Maine coon (both of which can grow to a LARGE size but aren't known for attacking humans or other pets). I've just been comparing sizes via google images and lynx are a lot smaller than I thought.

@@ABC1701A yes I think it would be fine to release them, personally.

I feel so privileged to have been one of the lucky ones to do a lynx experience before you stopped doing them! I think it would be amazing to have lynx wild again, but I worry it would attract people to try find them too much! I struggle to choose my favourite part of the zoo because I love different bits for different reasons.

Bats are the only animals I have a phobia of, so you ladies would have to do a lot to convince me to walk in that pen. Its just the fact that I can't understand that we have mammals with pteradactyl wings in our world. My question is how are you guys not skiddish or on the edge especially when they surround you and crawl on your leg? Do you guys get frieghtened when they fly off over your head? I dont think anyy living organism should be extinct bats included cool to see one as long as i'm on the other side of the glass. But you guys would probably rather feed the bats rather than the grizzly bears. Incredible work ladies.
@NorthumberlandZoo10 күн бұрын
You’re not the only one with a fear of bats.. it is very common. That’s why it was so important to display this species in a ‘daytime’ exhibit rather than a traditional nocturnal one - not only because they are a diurnal species but this allows the public to ‘see’ them and see how special they really are. As keepers we are not skittish in this exhibit, this is one of our favourites as there are few species at the Zoo who we can work in with and that we can build these types of positive relationships. When they fly past it is amazing! Would strongly recommend a bat experience to change your mind! 😉😊

If you don't mind me asking, how long do those wooden structures (eg. fences) last? They do not look to have any kind of treatment to make them water resistant, though please correct me if I am wrong, and considering the climate I was wondering how economical they would be as a choice since they look great, but. When it comes to favorite area, the African grey parrot aviary was a pleasant surprise with how spacious it is. I guess that is one of the benefits of newer ZOOs as opposed to old ZOOs in my country, there are fewer space restrictions and you can build "up to code" from the get go. Plus it looks awesome and the parrots get to watch people now! :)
@jimroberts300911 күн бұрын
They're probably "Pressure Treated" This is a process that forces preservatives into the wood. Any brushed-on treatment might be poisonous.
@NorthumberlandZoo10 күн бұрын
It depends on which kind of wood you mean. We don’t treat the ‘waney’ boards from the local saw mill and that doesn’t last forever, however that wood is inexpensive compared to treated wood and when we replace it with new waney board, the old is recycled into our biomasses to use for heating - so nothing goes to waste! The parrots love their new aviary and we have seen positive health benefits as well as bird-to-bird relationships formed in this space which is great to see. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻
