This has been incredibly helpful for me in going back and cleaning up a install that I did not do. Helped me to organize things properly and really make the system run smoother. Subbed and liked!

@Dak552 Really depends on what you are wanting to do. If you want to run a Windows 2008 R2 version, then you will have to make sure the hardware is 64bit at the very least. Here is what my server specs are: My old main desktop converted to my server which has an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 4GB DDR2 ram, and a couple hard drives. That handles running Server 2008 R2 and a Hyper-V machine running another Server 2008 R2 with various roles with no problems (See previous videos).

You are welcome. I would have to setup roaming profiles again to do some testing and to see if I can recreate your issue. I wonder if you have a permission issue on your home drives or something?

@curtinmsa No problem at all. I will add it to my "Videos to record" list. I tackled this myself here at home years ago, and it wasn't the easiest task to complete, but I can try and help.

True that! Important to have a GB connection! We had outlying schools on slow connections and it was ok if the users's home folders and such were actually at the outlying DC's storage, but if they were not, it would take forever.

Implementing FOLDER REDIRECTION & ROAMING PROFILES with default option 'GRANT USER EXCLUSIVE ACCESS ONLY' permission caused problems related to the inability of an Administrator (me) to retrieve or remove folders/files needed by managers or co-workers when the user went on leave or terminated. Wondering why you reccomend that setting?

Are you trying to view their directories from a Server 2008/2012 box perhaps? The security measures on those boxes has those results by default. I bet if you try to access the same directory via a Win7/XP computer you should have rights to view it (sounds weird I know). I don't remember exactly what I did to work around this, but you could always add the domain administrators group to the allowed permissions.. let me know how it goes. I hope to have a complete lab setup soon for a lot of testing

Question you mentioned that you don't like using roaming profiles. Is it because as the user continues to use roaming profile the file increases in size making the time to logon or off takes longer.
@PC-Addicts9 жыл бұрын
+Todd Wilson Well, it was a loooooong time ago when I last managed roaming profiles and the only thing I can remember about them that I didn't like is when users traveled from one geographical location to another (from one DC to another). Their profiles would have to be pulled over whatever ISP / bandwidth connected the two different locations. Other than that, I can't remember if there was another reason.

Ouch - nothing is worse than a bunch of users having roaming profile issues! Good tip by the way, thanks!

Hi Chris, I was wondering if you know a way that I can automatically separate the profiles for windows 7 and windows XP in AD. I want the Win7 profiles to go to folder \\server\win7Prifiles and the XP profiles to go to XPProfiles. My issue is that the users go back and forth between OS. Thanks

I use roaming profiles where I work. I have an issue with slow log in times and log off times. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or am I just better of disabling them. If so, is there a preferred way to do this without wrecking everything?

Is there a way to repair a profile? like delete it from your computer and then re login? Mine keeps adding 001 and 002 and so on to where it almost seems like its running off 2 profiles at the same time. What is the best way to clean up a profile?
@PC-Addicts10 жыл бұрын
T. Price Yes, log into the client computer as different user. Open up System Properties -> Advanced Tab -> User Profile Settings button. Select profile you want to delete and select delete.

Ah okay! I wondered how schools created accounts with network drives attached and such, but you can use enviro. variable liekes %username% which I never knew about! I tried roaming profiles and it is nice if you have a gigabit connection, but anything slower just doesn't really work if speed was something you needed. It can take a few minutes to log out and save a 100 MB desktop file.
@PC-Addicts12 жыл бұрын
Oh man... I think with roaming profiles, you are always going to have the slow login/logoff issues... If there is a way you can get rid of them, I would do it. As for the best way without wrecking things.... ouch... Fortunately, I have never had to do this in a production environment. Let me think about this one for a bit.

If I download a program from the internet and then used a different computer, would I be able to run that app on the different computer?
@PC-Addicts2 жыл бұрын
Depends on a few things such as how the application is designed to run, how the install works, how it's deployed, etc. Hard to answer this one.
@georgelee58542 жыл бұрын
@@PC-Addicts what if the application was stored in user home folder?(as set up per shown in your video on that) so like set the install or move program files from that directory and then on another client use that same directory to pull the program from the server
