The video was good but I can tell the difference when there is faster movement. At first I thought it was my monitor until you mentioned you were using a different camera. And looked back at other videos too rule out that something else was not going on. Either way it was good just felt movement was smoother on the Canon. Or it can just be my imagination also. Great job by the way always look forward to new videos.

For a modest homelab with something like Proxmox or XCP-NG, I think the slightly older Lenovo M720Q still offers the best value. Mine was $400 used, with an i5-9400T (so no vPro), a single 16GB module and a 512GB nvme SSD. I added an additional 2.5" 512GB SSD and a second 16GB module. Really solid homelab hypervisor for a total of around $550 - 600.

I have a G5 and it will let things get VERY hot (80c) before the fan starts ramping up. You can raise the base speed, which helps idle temperature but when things get hot, it gets noisy.

Why not the A7S3 tho, essentially the same camera with more features and cheaper. Is it the audio adapter?
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo 3 жыл бұрын
This is basically just for a more portable solution. The Canon C70's/ R5 combination is awesome, and frankly, the C70 is much better for the studio camera. The lack of the viewfinder hump is good, handle with XLR is nice (adding the XLR-K3M effectively negates the cost delta.) Fan for cooling also helps. Other little features like the tally lamp and mounting holes without a cage are a big deal for me and what I want to use it for. Overall, I like the Canon (much) better but the FX3 made more sense than the A7S III for me for this use case.

Not sure it is a good idea to put RAM slot under the fan for dust reason, would it lead to bad contact in a long run? and flexible port is not more flexible than a PCIe slot like the best ones on lenovo or dell :)
@cldpt
@cldpt 3 жыл бұрын
Both Dell and HP have been doing these boxes with ram under the blower fan since like 1st gen Intel (2010?), so I'd say it's fine. Also note that the pcie slot on the Thinkstation is NOT standard and you need custom adapters which: 1. Are mega rare; 2. Are stupid expensive at 50-100usd; 3. Have 3 (!!!) options for pcie x1, x4 and x8 (I think); and last but not least 4. The adapters actually turn the angle of pcie connection 90 degrees, so if you wanted to use a standard with the cover open, like a GPU or an m.2 expansion, think again because it's gonna be trouble. In my opinion, if you wanted to expand of these boxes, either HP, ThinkPad or Dell, you should just go with an m.2 to pcie riser which are the same price as Lenovo's, but at least angle wherever you want (although the Dell is not a great option due to single m.2 x4). These would be either the ADT-Link R43SG for m-key or if you wanna go for the wifi slot instead, they also have the R53SF (that will be x1 lanes only...). Do remember that you will need a power supply, but I'm guessing most people who would use these already expected the device they will plug won't power from the mini PC
@believlle
@believlle 3 жыл бұрын
@@cldpt nice points. I like the lenovo ones which has ram and m.2 slots under back cover, with 920x you have two m.2 slots. I only imagined to expand the box with a 10gig nic which is fairly "easy" on a lenovo 920q or 920x with pci raiser and I have seen many people did it already.

@@ServeTheHomeVideo i purchased my HP 805G6 (with 4750G) at a pretty heavy discount in February and received it in March after long delay. Just like lenovo, the "list" price is nearly double what you actually pay if you buy during their various seasonal sales. it is a great machine, nicely HP-over-engineered chassis inside, and easy to expand. This is the first "pre-built" machine I've bought in decades and it's nice to see that the internals and chassis are of similar quality to what you'd get in a custom build. I added a second NVMe drive just for linux, leaving the windows drive in its original state. I also added a second bank of identical RAM "16GB DDR4 3200MHz DIMM PC4-25600 CL22 1Rx8 1.2V 288-Pin UDIMM Desktop RAM Memory Module M378A2G43AB3-CWE" (these systems are weirdly shipped with only one bank of single-rank RAM, so you probably want to add a second (or even third and fourth) additional single rank modules.) Prior to solving my ethernet woes (see below) I was considering adding a half height PCIE "Asus 10Gbps Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express, Network Adapter PCIe 2.0/3.0 X4 SFP+") The main issue I had is with linux and the built-in ethernet. To get Ubuntu 20.04.2LTS running (must be .2 with the 5.8 kernel, the 5.4 in 20.04 and 20.04.1 won't boot). You need to install the r8168-dkms package "dkms source for the r8168 network driver"... and even then it doesn't work, although it pretends to see the ethernet device. To get working ethernet you need to turn off "PCIE power management" in the BIOS as-well. Otherwise the network device is "asleep" and never talks to the RJ-45. [[if anybody has a fix for this, let me know, as i'd like to be able to have "PCIE power management" running]]... The one other problem I've had is that my unit came with a "free" third display port in the flex-port slot (I'd have preferred 2.5G ethernet). THe only problem is that if you plug a display into it, all the displays die, and if you use it by itself, nothing is displayed). But since I'm using it with 2 4K displays day to day the third display was always an "optional" thing as opposed to a requirement. FYI the 4750G's built in Radeon GPU seems to handle 2x4K displays "ok", though in at least one area of my GPU-using software, i notice some GL scrolling text jitter and sluggishness that doesn't occur on my reliable old powerhog RxVega56 card., nor any of my mobile device GPU's running the same software). TODO: see if 5.12 kernel, or 2 additional single banks or RAM fixes the "jitter" which you won't see in any normal usage, such as KDE Plasma or Gnome Desktop.

Based on the stats 4650GE beats 10500(Not T) in every bench with only 35 Watts. It would have been amazing to get a lower price without the Win 10 Pro and the 512 SSD but due to the chip shortage I just did not find any other deals with better CPUs below 900-1000 Euros.
