A service dog also makes a invisible disability visible. So that's something to consider.

I recently sruck up a conversation with a woman who has a service dog. It turned out she was training the dog with help of a professional trainer. We talked about how expensive trained service dogs are and how few peope could afford them. She really needs the dog's help so I hope it works out for her.

I'm glad you touched on service dogs and interactions with the public. I've been talking to a service dog handler who has a psychiatric service dog to get more info because I am considering getting one with my doctor and therapist's support. I've struggled with anxiety for about 12 years and it's gotten progressively worse over the past 2 years to where I don't like to go out of the house on my own. However, I love animals and I love talking about animals and my mom recently heard a news story about a young woman with a service dog who tasks with anxiety disorders and thought that would be an excellent option for me. Unfortunately, it might be a while before I can get one because I am not working at the moment and, like you said, they are expensive. As for interactions, I wondered if getting business cards printed up with information on service dogs would help at the beginning while I'm just getting comfortable and then I could work on explaining it myself. I get very stressed from talking to too many people due to my anxiety so I think this might be a good idea for me. Anyway, I am still researching and won't get one until I know that I can afford the expense and that the benefits outweigh the risks. I know service dogs are not for everyone so I don't want to take it lightly. I am so glad there are established teams out there willing to talk to others about their experiences.

I was thinking you could also try wearing headphones when you go out so maybe people would be less inclined to talk to you if they think you won't hear them.

I have A psychiatrist service dog and to be completely honest i have a service dog because i jave a disability that prevents me from going out in public and being able to....well....do anything. So for me when someone comes up to me i tell them to read her vest i cant talk. My vest states "ptsd service dog interacting with handle causes severe distress, do not approach" as well as " do not pet, no eye contact, no pictures." My next vest will state the same this but add "got question? Ada.gov"

I find at first people find it rude when i just please read her vest and walk away but after they read it they seem to understand. Before my dog i couldnt go to stores with out disassociating every time someone looked at me much less spoke to me. So in my mind i do what i can and thats all i can do lol.

I love this video. My sister is blind and had a service dog when I was a teen and she was going to college. She found that having a dog was not for her and never replaced her dog when she retired. It’s nice having someone with a SD say that it’s not for everyone. My sister learned that she didn’t have the patience for a dog. She was much more independent on her own. It’s the #1 question she gets asked. “Why don’t you have a dog?”

I think it is great that you make so many educational videos. What about having some cards printed up with your name, Harlow's name and your KZbin channel? That way, if someone has questions, they can go to your channel instead of having you spend a long time talking about it.

I'm waiting to be matched with an SD. If I didn't have a back yard I wouldn't be able to have my ESA's or get an SD. Also I'm lucky enough to have a helpful husband and 2 helpful kids, they currently help me care for my ESA's and will help with my SD. I have EDS, Dysautonomia, Lupus, Adrenal Insufficiency, and a bunch of complications/comorbidities from those chronic illnesses.

Hi there Jaquie & Izzy! I LOVE Harlow - I think she is a reliable and trustworthy companion however, a service dog takes alot of time, energy, and effort to train and take care of! It also helps when your spouse isn't allergic! haha I thought about adopting one, but I am not it would be the best plan for me. I am glad you have Harlow though! She is so adorable!!

6:13 Have you ever had a cop ask you for papers when you have been at a business and the business told you that you couldn't have a service dog there when you clearly have all rights to have one and your service dog never done anything that a business would have the right to kick you out for?

Luckily you can interact with the public usually. I also watch other disabled folks online who are overwhelmed as they have the dog for psychological issues. Very difficult although most handle ok. I wish the public would be more respectful and leave y'all alone. Also, sill thinking about pros and cons of ownership for myself.....

Hello Chronically Jaquie I am a mom with an autistic child who also has adhd and I think it’s about time for a service dog for him to help with his fits and to prevent hurting himself or others and overall with difficult tasks and protect him as well. But looking into this it so expensive and the grants I was looking up seem to be completely bogus. I purchased a dog and was wondering how did you train Harlow because I really don’t have 7000 to 30000 to pay for the training. Any advice on how I can do this or if you have any other recommendations on how I can get funding would be a major help. Thank you!

Physically I could really benefit from a mobility assistance service dog however I’m a single mum without a great support network (family is few hundred miles away) so I just couldn’t realistically take care of a service dogs needs, it wouldn’t be fair to the dog or my kids, especially my teenage daughter who is already my care giver. I have my awesome cat for company and snuggles and I manage with walking aids such as a wheeled frame, couch, stick, wheelchair and such like. I don’t have any conditions needing alerts so service dog is firmly in the cons with few pros. It’s just not suitable for all but it’s great that options exist that you can trailer to you’re own needs, abilities and support network.

Is Harlow a field golden, a show line golden or a cross between the two? She seems like she would be a cross because she isn’t supper fluffy like a show golden but she isn’t super red like a field golden either. Just curious:)

Hypoallergenic dogs like poodles and poodle crosses. Also with some disabilities (USA only) there are miniature horses
@kodaa6372
@kodaa6372 5 жыл бұрын
Mini horses are also an option. As well as allergy control. If those aren't options, then a service dog wouldn't work for you and you'd need to work with your care team to find another way to meet your needs.

I'm trying to train a service dog with a trainer, but I have learned that my health is not standing up to it, and plus the energy requirements are physically too hard on me, so my trainer is probably going to take him and I won't be doing this again unless I'm in a better living situation etc.
