The #slotcar #motor is nearly ready. In this episode we reassemble the brush gear on the end bell and align everything correctly. There is a specialist #tool used in this video but they are easy to obtain.
Here are some AMAZON links to the tools used in this video. As an Amazon Associate I earn a very small amount from qualifying purchases...

The hood alignment tool is one of my most used tools. Mine is a Magnahone with a diamond surface on two planes. It is rectangular in cross plane and I swap the direction around when using it to clean all faces of the hood.

Thanks to all the comments, I think mine is a Magnehone version too.

Your brush hood alignment tool looks like the one I have made by Magnehone. At the time, Koford didn't carry diamond tooling. If they do now, I don't know who makes it. Mine is about 20 years old. I've never seen an alignment bar that fit the smaller 16D size brush hoods. Back in the 70s, I cut the appropriate size K&S square brass tubing for a 16D alignment bar & have used it ever since. Before diamond tooling was available, I used square micro-files to eliminate brush hood burrs.

Thank you for that information. It might very well be a Magnehone tool 👍🏻.

I have seen people file the brushes to advance the timing on motors. I am not convinced it always helps because the brush contact area is smaller.

@@CleaveTech Great stuff James. I always pick up something by watching. I notch the trailing edge of the brushes (big foot brushes). Standard brushes wobble in the hoods. However the big foots are then too tall and cause a dead short during arm rotation because the comm diameter is too small. You need to do some basic maths to figure out how much to notch out. In fact the face area of the brushes is too big (for the amount of current draw) and I notch both the trailing edge and the face to reduce the cross sectional area. You dont need a lot of spring tension for S16D and DeathStars. I actually reduce the tension from standard. Try different spring tensions and measure the RPM in one of your videos, might be interesting. You scrape up the last few hundred RPM the motor has by shunting the brushes.

I always add timing for more rpm, especially since the motor does not race in reverse.

I would belive its a magnehone tool, i have one myself. Actually two, where'as one dont have diamond coating (used for gold plated hood's)

Thank you. I seem to have a few tools from magnehone without actually realising it 😂

Great video as always...thank you. My alignment bar does not have the abrasive component, but still serves my purpose magnificently. I know that we're talking infinitesimal bits, but would you dab a bit of putty around the can to pick up any fragments, before you replace the arm and close it all up. I have one of these donks in a heavy weight brass chassis hardbody Nascar style car, and despite its age and mass, it howls...✌

Thank you. Using a bit of “putty” is a great tip. I use something called “BluTack” to clean up the motor. You can see it being used in an earlier video. It is great stuff and I use it for cleaning all the time.

Learning gobs of info.Thankyou sir. Quick question .When why and where do comm. drops come into play when building or running motors etc. ?
@CleaveTech
@CleaveTech Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I must say that I never use comm drops. I like the brushes and comm to stay clean. Adding a fluid to the com can cause the carbon from the brushes to become “gummed up” on the comm. I have seen them used to try and get the final few laps out of a sealed Falcon motor when it started to go slow.

If you rotate one of the brushes over, where the short side of one and the long side of the other meet, would that be a form of advancing or retarding the motor timing depending which way you install?
