This week, we’re catching up with Beverly. Beverly’s sessions here on In Therapy are coming to a close and in between sessions she expressed disappointment and frustration at this. Together, we explore how therapeutic work never truly ends and ultimately how self-development is a life-long process.
Alex Howard is a London-based Therapeutic Coach dedicated to helping break the stigma around mental health and helping people make real, positive changes in their lives. Alex is also the creator of Therapeutic Coaching and founder of The Optimum Health Clinic and Conscious Life.

OK this is amazing, the insights from you both are spot on, it's all so very helpful. incl summarising the never ending journey, authentic vs ideal, inner critics, loving kindness, meeting needs, boundaries, handling emotions. And moving forward crucially wi more self belief, recognising all those cheering you on vs inner voice doubt. Omg my own current journey is so similar. I cannot thank you both enough for this one. Bless you Beverly, you are so remarkable, beautiful and fucking awesome. Another one for your Bottle xx

Beverly, thank you. You are such an inspiration. Watching your journey unfold has been so healing for me. Thank you for being brave and baring your soul, so that we too can learn by following your therapeutic process. Inner work is rarely, if ever, linear. Be kind to yourself, and know that you have helped more people than you could probably ever imagine. As for Alex, wow! What an incredible coach and counsellor to have your back. Sending you love from Australia 🙏🏼🌷

Thank you so much Alex and Beverly. I was touched by these sessions and am very glad there will be some follow up and support. How on earth could you be so brave to be filmed and face deep feelings on camera?! You're a star!

Thank you, Beverly, for sharing your process. I am amazed how self aware, honest and precise you are. Just by sharing your struggles, you helped me and others a lot, independent of your (also amazing and inspiring) progress. I could relate to so many of your struggles, eventhough we are in different life situations, and it helped me to understand that I am not alone in them and that there is always a path to growth and change.

I watch all the In therapy sessions, but I have particularly enjoyed following Beverly's story. I will miss following her story, but I also found it interesting to watch a recap of her sessions, and how to structure an ending (I recognise that I can have a challenge with endings). I enjoyed watching her developing her insights and her emotional maturity, and the understanding of how her relationship with her mother has impacted her life. Thanks. 😊

Beverly, I have learnt more tools by listening to your sessions with Alex. You have reached out and touched other people with your story. Our life journey many indigenous cultures say is a circle and not a linear one. You have more knowledge now to move forward and able to find more joy. All the best.♥

Beverly, I'm so excited for your journey going forward with the hard work you and Alex have been doing. On a personal note I climbed Ingleborough 4 years ago, now I'm on a recovery journey with CFS. My goal is to go climb it again. When I do, your journey will come to mind and give me the confidence to keep going. Many many thanks to you being brave enough to share and to Alex and team for the excellent work. Wishing you all the best.

What a lovely looking lady Beverly is, and I LOVE her long hair. She looks very elegant. She has lovely expressive hands. I am in therapy now, and felt like Beverly in saying "what am I getting from this"? The therapist does not seem to be helping me at all, and I am paying for this?! But I then realized how it had made me think about things more, about my reaction to things, and how I either change them, or live with them, but stop complaining about them! I hate any confrontation, and have always run away from it, instead of standing up for myself. I worry about the consequences if I do, but then I am the one who suffers when I do not! I have been living in fear of horrible things happening for so many years now - I am 66 years young and want to enjoy my life, not just struggle through each day. xxx

Dear Beverly, I'm so glad this is not the complete end of hearing of your story. I'm glad you get some more sessions and that we will eventually hear from you again. I have identified with your work so much, especially feeling somewhat abandoned at the end. It's hard to wrap up when you are still working through things. Best to you!

What I’d like to hear about is KATIE…as in, what happened to her? She was filmed for 13 sessions and no termination process..and she was in a very unstable place at the end with talk of suicide ideation. Really left viewers hanging, and I shudder to think about her. This was handled very badly IMO and I sure hope she is okay.

I followed the sessions and I kind of worked together with you. My story is different from Bev's, but I could relate to hers in many ways. It was so helpful. I even had a very strange somatic experience after watching session 5. I felt an irresistible urge to move my body to shake out something from it. It felt as if I had some huge greasy mass at the level of my hips. Anyway, the whole journey was a very strong experience. Very, very helpful. Thank you both! 💜

I think Beverly's great and will certainly make friends if she gives herself a chance. Everyone is a person in their own right, not just half of a couple or a grandparent. No one could have pleased her mother She did well surviving at all! Alex talking to Beverly about what you focus on reminded me of a Big Issue seller asking my friend and me with a smile "Going to work? Going home? " I thought of the hassles at work and the worries around mortgage rates but realised that from his perspective I was living the dream.

Dear Alex, your skill and perspectives are so helpful and I benefit from hearing you saying similar things to different clients. I have a question about attachment. Would you call it attachment when your client isn't quite ready to move on from sessions with you? I think attachment between therapist and client is probably essential for healing and progress to take place. But then is it a problem if the client is attached and not ready to move on? I'm not saying Beverly was overly attached. I've had an experience where I got really important help form a therapist. Part of it was healing of a child part of me that had been in the hospital at 11 months of age for 12 days (spinal meningitis, normal procedure for 1960's). When my therapist wasn't available I felt panic and abandonment like I must have felt at 11 months old. I have learned ways to comfort my child self but I still feel a great deal of attachment for that therapist and wish I knew how to detach. I'm not sure if Alex will be reading this. I am interested in other people's perspectives on attachment in therapy.

Perhaps the scriptwriters needed to show what happens sometimes when people finish their sessions without a sense of inner completion..... perhaps they felt she was going to cope the best out of all the people on the show?
