txg.ca - Answering commonly asked questions about which golf clubs should make up your choice of 14 in the bag! Many players wonder how many wedges to carry, should they use long irons, high lofted fairway woods, etc. We discuss some of the common situations we see at the fitting studio, and offer advice on composing a bag that provides the best possible yardage gapping.

I hit my driver about 240-250. I play 10 clubs total. I feel like I use my 7iron, 5 hybrid and pitching wedge the most (aside from the putter of course). Great video!

This is the greatest all time infomercial for TXG. Problem is simply that you don’t have enough locations. If I go to the local golf shop, I KNOW I’m not getting a proper fitting. If I drive 40 miles to the only advertising “fitter” “in the local area”, I will never feel that I’ve gotten what I need to get out of a club fitting after watching these videos. 😪

I am a 70 year old senior. I just did a full bag fitting at a company here in the U.S. (Oregon). One of the recommendations, which I had thought of already, was for me to eliminate my 5 metal. I have a 5 and 7 metal in the bag and hit them both about the same distance. I also have wedges that don't match my Ping G400 7-U irons (56 and 60). I am replacing the wedges with a 54 and 58 that match my set. My driver head, after lots of testing with others, was best for me but will order a different shaft per the fitter's recommendation. My average drive is about 210 yards. The new shaft added around 10 yards. Last, ordering a new 4 and 6 hybrid per the fitter's recommendation. Fitting was well worth the money and fun!

I just started this year, I’m too new to even do a gapping session, before I even bought clubs I learned that a beginner doesn’t need 14 clubs. I have 10, and I only really use 4 or 5 while playing. I bought a starter set of cheap clubs, and have replaced them with pretty much the same loft clubs. Just ones that are nicer to look at, lol. I bought most used, once in good enough to do a gapping session, shaft fitting I’ll drive up there and have it done. Let’s see what happens first, me getting better, or Canadians letting us back in their country (I live in Buffalo). Right now I have an M4 driver, Wilson D300 3 wood 15, D300 4h 22, Wilson D7 6-P, Wilson C200 SW, Cleveland putter.

I keep coming back to the older videos and picking up something new. The links conditions Ian talked about at the end is something I play regularly here in NZ and have ended up doing almost as described (I have 4* bounce 54 for the low nipper and 12* bounce 58 for bunkers) through a LOT of trial and error.

Great point guys. I swing about 225 carry and I used to carry too many woods and hybrids. Since I stuck to a 4-5 wood and a forgiving ping utility and a 4 iron, skipped the five iron, I played so much better, simply because I didn't have the option on course to overthink the choice club. Now I have the luxury of carrying 4 wedges, two of which are same lofts just different bounce. My scrabbling is much better along with pace of play! Love the channel, keep up the great job!

Great video guys. This really hits home. I'm still playing fairway woods from 2002, irons from 2005, and my driver is from 2010. My wedges are a couple of seasons old and are due to be replaced. But my gaps are perfect for me and I know exactly how far each club goes. My irons are no longer USGA conforming which has put me in a predicament if I want to play in any state or national level tournaments. But I'm actually fearful of getting new equipment especially since I play heavy swing weights and flat lies. My fairway woods are 4 degrees flat and I can't find any current fairway woods that can go that flat. It took me several years of hard work to get my set to where I like it and having to start over is not my idea of fun. I'm really afraid of getting that "fitter" we have all had experience with that is dead set on selling me clubs that go the furthest because my numbers with those clubs are "optimized" fro my swing. Why is Canada so far from Texas?

The other thing Ian didn't mention but can be very real is that new sets may not even be close to actual spec. I am very lucky living close to TXG that I was able to go in and do a gapping session for my Callaway CF16 irons. Only the 5 iron was actually at spec - the rest of the lofts and lies were out all over the place. The best money you will ever spend in golf is going to TXG and getting your Irons and wedges properly gapped for loft and lie. It is actually not expensive and would be my number one recommendation of how to spend ANY money in golf. Gapping your irons and wedges and then fitting in the right combo of clubs at the top of the bag, for your swing speed and handicap, to me is worth 10 lessons. My second recommendation for the more serious golfer is to then consider getting all your clubs re-grip with the same grip so that your wedges, your irons, you hybrids and woods all feel the same in your hands - the grip is so important so spend the money once everything is gapped correctly and have them gripped for YOU.

For me the ideal gapping is 12 yards apart and I can promise you I do not hit the driver 300 yards (at least not unless the fairway is rock hard downhill and big wind behind!). The more interesting question is whether gapping is consistent throughout the bag. I suspect that most mid HC golfers have sensible gapping at top end of the bag but may find that there is not a lot of difference between 4i & 5i or 5i & 6i. Current I carry driver, 3w, 5w, 19 hybrid, 5i-PW then 50,54 & 58 degree wedges. In the next few years I would not be surprised if 5i gets dropped for another hybrid.

I've often deliberately practiced and carried only 7 clubs (including putter). And often score better with this reduced bag. Strong 3 wood. 7 wood or equiv. loft hybrid. 6 iron. 8 iron. PW. LW. Putter. I use the same 7 clubs and build a fair amount of confidence with those clubs...so at address feel confident over the ball with "one of my favoured clubs", feel I can knock down the 6 iron or 8 iron etc to get the distance required etc. I carry my 3 wood 210. Play off 12. Swing easy. (I'm pushing 50yo!) Practice my short game a lot and I do OK. I really don't think mid handicappers like me or high handicappers need anything like 14 clubs in the bag.

I am upgrading my bag to fitted Hogan irons and I will play fewer than 14 clubs. My range is 6,500 yards from the whites. The 3I and the hybrid are gone. I will only carry the 3W when I have tight driving holes. Fewer clubs, fewer errors.

Great video and explanation on how to approach setting up the bag. Definitely something I see around the forums are guys asking what club they should buy or do they need a specific club and don't even consider the gap that needs to be filled. I've seen setups with a 4 iron and 4 hybrid because they met a gap need

Bery much support from my experience the different things you refer to. Indeed over my last recent 50 rounds (walking) I decided to just take 7 clubs (and my scores on my difficult home course) were not much different to when I use the full set putter included (or excluded as the case may be). Given the downward angle of attack and relatively slower swing speed (being in my 60s) exactly my driver carry (when hit well) is in the range of 200-210. I use two hybrids then a 3 19 degree hybrid (180-185 yds) a 4 hybrid 22 degree (160-165 yds), then my 7 iron (140-150) and if I need to jump go to my 9 iron next (125-130) - have an 8 if I need it for a particular course. Use the 9 for chipping. Then jump to a gap wedge (60 degrees - 90-100 yards). Carry a pw if I need. Then sand wedge (56 degrees). Also as you talked about after frustrations with fairway woods I no longer use a 3 or 5 wood (indeed dont even posses them). My challenge now is to marry the driver and driver length with the gap between my 3 hybrid but can live with it if I have to as I chip very well with either my 9 or pw. And my putter is generally always hot or can even put just as well with my hybrid. So if I can make the drover my friend with more reliability and think about how to fix that long gap between the 3 hybrid and driver length (maybe a forgiving driving iron or one of the new things coming soon like the TM gapr might be the answer).

Recently cleaned out my bag. Had driver, three fairway woods 3, 5, 7 a 2 iron, two hybrids 4 & 5. Now I’m carrying a driver, 3 wood and a hybrid 4. I no longer stand over the ball wondering if I have the right club. Very interesting point about shaft weight progression, hadn’t really thought much about it.

So i go with driver, 3w, 2h, 5i-9i, 46-50-54-58-62 and i love it. People say i have a huge gap at the low end and too many wedges, but each of my wedges has a specific purpose in my bag. All my wedges have different grinds and bounces, the 62 is the high-toe and very versatile. As for the low end, i have 3 different driving tools. Irons just cover a distance. If i need to hit a 3i-4i length i choke up on my hybrid, would rather have the extra wedges for shots. I think the main benefit to my game is now i have different tools for different jobs. Gaps are just one part of it, but for me lie has a bigger impact. I can hit my 50 same distance as my 62, but they have two different bounces and grinds. I think the driving iron trend is sort of the same thing, its another way of playing a drive with different characteristics. I wish yall were closer to me, i need a good driver fitting :)

For me 10 degree driver, 16 degree fairway, 22 degree hybrid, 5 iron to pitching wedge, 52 58 and 64 degree wedge and putter.....13 clubs.....I sometimes add in another hybrid if I think I may need a higher flight than the five iron..... I really don't see much need for 3 and five wood.....unless you drive a lot with the 3....depends on the course I guess, but I love the '4' wood. A lot of the wedge gapping depends upon the strength of loft of the irons. I prefer more traditional lofts. Great info as usual guys

That is exactly what I play. Essentially 1, 4, 7 wood. I added an identical hybrid tuned to 25°, this can sometimes hit green from 175m. My irons are all 4° apart starting from 8i, so 40, 44, 48pw, then 52, 56, 60. Better to have larger gaps at the top of the bag and good distance control in the short irons and wedges.

Absolutely FANTASTIC vlog and a piece that's been needed on KZbin for quite sometime. Also you're timing is impeccable as I'm going to get refit again for a set of irons next month. I don't think amature golfers necessarily think about half of these things and just get the retailer to fit them, which naturally will only be a quick fit. The key to me is find an independent like yourself and others around the world where the consumer may be and get an unbiased approach to fitting. I'm saving my cash as we speak to come see you in Toronto from the UK and try and get a Jays or Leaf's game in whilst I'm there lol

Just to add about the gap wedge and iron set marrying, if you are a lefty like me and I have srixons and they dont make a gap wedge for lefties then the way I overcome this (and yes only use for full shots as I chip with the 9 or pw) is to keep within the broad family hence went with the rtx 3 and the same shafts as my irons- also for the sand wedge. Closest thing to matching up. But the point of gapping/yardage and closer marrying depending on what ones swing characteristics, length etc is necessary and spot on.

what's the proper gapping for someone that carries driver 235 in the air 3-wood goes about 210 and then 5 wood goes about 190 and then 7 wood goes about 180 and I will goes about 170 Carry.... then we transition tour 6iron which is the longest iron in the bag all the way down to a 58-degree wedge.... course distance plays 6500 to 6700.....

Great explanation on how gapping effects your game and fitting! I play PW 52 58... my home course is only about 6300 yards from the whites so driver and wedge for most par 4’s during the season. par 3’s are relatively short. I am just this year hitting my driver and woods well which is helping a lot but but now I think my 4 iron is the same distance as my hybrid.... totally different flights though which is the only reason I haven’t changed the bag. Great work guys keep it up!

Another great video! Loving the content still. As for what I'm playing - 10.5 driver, 3W I can't seem to hit, 5i-Sw, 60 deg and a putter. My biggest gaps are between driver and 5i and PW to 60 deg. I really want to get a gap session done but I feel my shots aren't consistent enough yet to get good value out of it. I started the summer with a 115 and just shot a 98 Sunday morning, so I'm close to the goals I've set for myself. Course management has helped the most, but really dialing in my distances I think would be a good next step. Right now par 3's and the long par 4s are my biggest enemies and it's mostly due to not being confident in what distances will get me where I need to be.

Perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way...but my set composition changes for each of the courses and conditions in which I play. Up here in western Montana our local courses were built in extremely varying environments...from lush river valleys to exposed mountainsides and links style sand dunes. I set my bag up for the course I will be playing...and proper gapping is less of a priority. For instance...one of the courses is heavily timbered with narrow fairways. I absolutely must have my 3-iron to extract my ball from the trees. And guys who can't hood a 3-iron...might as well leave their driver in the car. Another local course...although fairly wide open...has narrow fairways and incredibly gnarly rough. Not necessarily high...but extremely thick and dense. It's nice in that the ball tends to stay up...but my short faced fairway woods want to go right underneath it...resulting in high short shots. So...I go with one fairway wood and two hybrids...I'd much rather have to hit a hybrid from the fairway, than a fairway wood from the rough. I tend to think in terms of different shots that I might have to play...rather than the exact spacing of each of my clubs. Of course...I try to keep them as close together as possible. But to me...playing around a gap in yardage is easier than trying to play around course conditions that require certain clubs, and certain shots...in order to avoid the dreaded blowup hole.

I’ve just spent a lot of money buying new clubs and I have found that my old set my father gave me to the new set has roughly a difference of 6° from the old loft to new loft (7iron was 36° and is now 29°) So I have picked up more wedges now having 5 just in 4° spacing from pitching (43°)-Aw(48°)-Gw(52°)-Sw(56°)-Lw(60°). But now I have lost space for my woods and hybrid. Trouble is that my 4i and 5i are close is distance so I can take out the 4i and put my hybrid back in but leaves me with a large gap between it and my driver with no club room left in bag for a 3 wood. Wish the people I got fitted by understood this more before I spent so much money and now it seems I’ll have to spend more on spacing the wedges out further so I can fit a 3 wood back in the bag. If it wasn’t so expensive to fly to Canada from Australia I’d drop in to see you guys. Thanks TXG for all the information it’s been so helpful as a newcomer to golf.

But I've never felt strong on full shots with my 50 and mainly use my 50/56 for the feel shots. The set gap makes a lot of sense and the transition with something like the glide also makes sense. I always thought the glides looked bulky and felt I'd miss the forged feel.the new ones though... I feel like had I been in your shop I'd of lost a lot of money today!

Driver goes around 280-300, 3 wood (15*) 250-270, 3 hybrid (19) 225-250, and my 3 iron is around a 210 carry. As you can tell with my yardages, I struggle very much with consistency with 3 wood and hybrid. Have considered going with 4 wood (or p790 UDI) and strengthening my 3 and 4 irons 2 degrees to cover the gap. Wedges are vokey 50 54 and Hi-toe 60. Have thought of PW bending from 46-48 also. Long comment just curious to some thoughts. Tend to strike irons better than fairway wood and hybrid

Love your videos and I appreciate the testing using a good player with high swing speed. I’d like to get your take on the effect of adding counter weighting to the butt end of the grip using tour lock pro. I’ve put 30g plugs through my whole set and love the feel but can’t quite explain why. This is also a trend with products like secret grip and something you talked about a little bit with your videos on the tensi orange shaft as well as the weight of increasing grip size.

Gapping sessions are good, but it depends on how you are swinging on the day - if it's a bad day, you might well get some odd distances.

I use 7-8-pw-sw-putter. My 7 iron is 160 including roll. 3 of those will get me on or chipping. Then i take my usual 4 putts and move along. It's great to end with the same ball . Sorry to annoy the foresome when they all hit 240 center, but hey, that's only twice a year. I just can't hit a long club anymore .

Hi Guys. I need confirmation that I've worked out my fit right please? D - 260, 270. 3W- 230,240. 3H- 220, 225. My irons are 4 to PW, 200 to 130. GW-110,120, SW-100,110. LW-70,95. GW is a 50 but worried Ive to much gap to PW? Love all your posts by the way.

You guys bring up shaft weight progression and a 50g driver shaft and an 83g 3W shaft as a potential negative. With that in mind, I don't think iron shaft weight progression gets enough attention. Most taper tip shafts are the same weight in the 3 as they are the 9 and parallel tip shafts actually get heavier as they get longer. It surprises me that the ascending mass shafts aren't more popular.

Great video. Primary reason for me looking at new irons is the gapping. Longer, lower spin sets cause issues on both ends of the bag. 5i is near 4 hybrid/crossover spot and big gap from PW to Vokey 50. I that a common issue now with the plethora of distance oriented irons? Would like to have more traditional lofts but still game improvement type forgiveness. Any recommendations would be very welcome! Thx for the great channel

Great content guys! A video about gapping & set composition while simultaneously TM drops their GAPR line, what a timing 😄 noticed that their 2 iron (790 Udi& GAPR lo) are fairly light with D2 and fairly long with around 40.25”. currently game a 716 T-MB 2i with a x100. Any chance the get those driving irons to a decent swing weight with a graphite shaft that’s around standard 2i length (~39.5”) if those heads are that light?

You talk about weight progression, I have a 55g driver and increase +/- 10g up to hybrid, but my irons are heavier 120, because it helps my tempo. Thoughts?

I’m a little more advanced than most I’d imagine. I’m currently gaming an M4 19* hybrid. I like the look of irons more so the GAPR LO sounds great. I hit the new UDI with a HZRDUS Black 6.5 hybrid and it was too low for me to stop into a green. Great for driving about 250+. Such a dilemma. Wish I could have both. Since into greens where I can’t roll it up it’d go from trying a high cut with what’s normally a 260-270 3 wood down to a blasted 4 iron that’s normally 220-230 if I took out the hybrid. Quite a gap unless I could learn to hit a high cut with a 17* iron lol

Hey guys, great video as always. So my question is around my wedge gapping. My Nike covert 2.0 irons are pretty strong lofted with the set Gap wedge being around 48*. I hit that club between 125-130yds. Does it make sense for me to have another gap wedge around 52* to cover the gap between my SW and the set gap. Since they are cast iron clubs, not too many fitters around here want to mess with the lofts and lies. Ideally I realize I need a weaker lofted set given my distances, but I’m not quite financially ready for that. Would love to here your thoughts if you could find the time. By the way, in case you were wondering, I play Driver, 16* 3 wood and 20* hybrid then irons from 5-AW. Thanks for such informative videos.
