Jim, 23 year Navy vet (ret), who just bought used D110 (about 180 hours). Really appreciate your no-nonsense approach to common issues related to the mower. It’s overkill for my .25 acres, but if I don’t get to grass for several days, it give me relief from dreaded push mower! I really like the maintenance recommendations.

I set mine like the book s aid and wore out my wheels. I set my new s130 like the book said and and the wheel rubbed on the deck. Now I set the wheels 1 inch below deck and it works fine. Doesn't matter what height I cut my grass the scalp wheel keeps the deck 1 inch from touching. And its out of the way when I turn on driveway and sidewalks.

The second well done video of your I've seen. And you sure have a lot more DIY home improvement videos that look interesting! My brand new S120 came with the deck wheels set all the way up. I'll be mowing the grass to 3" but set the wheels to the second highest hole, 2". I'm hoping that will be a good compromise getting my deck low on the driveway for washing out the deck with the hose connector yet still high enough to protect the deck from bumps and grass from scalping. It was good to hear your reasoning for setting them as you did and I expect I'll be playing with this setting as I try to find what's best.

Great video sir. You might be wondering who mows at 1.5 inches. Surprisingly I do because my grass type requires it that low here in the deep south. I'm originally from the north where we would mow at 3 inches. It's crazy short down here but our grass is much different and grows more sideways with stolons so mowing that low is actually good for the grass here except in the Summer where it's at 2-2.5 inches...

What can I do to make the deck wheels get down at least to John Deere's 1/2-inch ground clearance? My S100's cutting height is set at 2-1/2 inches, and the wheels are in the second hole from the bottom as they should be for that cutting height. But my deck wheels are 1 inch above the ground (like yours do at your 3-inch cutting height). I can't get the wheels any lower. Tire pressure and deck level are as they prescribed. Why does the John Deere manual insist on having1/8 inch to 1/2-inch clearance above the ground?
@DIYJIM2 жыл бұрын

Wow, an Army guy that can put together complete sentences, impressed! :-) Just kidding brother, at least you don't eat crayons. Anyways, great vid, explains everything. I've got a D150 and my problem is when I turn sharp, the wheels scalp the grass. I think you mentioned that. I'm going to raise the wheels. Cheers!

Great videos Jim, I have a JD 115 Automatic that was completely rebuilt and painted (it's like new except for the engine ) and only one wheel is adjustable, the one on the brake side. Because of that I set it to the height of the wheel that is in the fixed position. I am getting a 3 inch cut even though I have the deck setting on 4. That not really a problem since I prefer 3 inches. I was just wondering if that was a design flaw that was later corrected and should I move the wheel to the lower setting. Thanks, I look forward to your response, Brian
@DIYJIM4 жыл бұрын
The wheels on the deck are just for scalping, so if you are happy and your not scalping your lawn close to the dirt I would leave the wheels where you put them. Hope I answered your question. Hope your summer is going good.
@tlm3574 Жыл бұрын
I followed instructions but if you set it in one of the rear holes th wheel rubs the deck on the left side wheel. I dont know whether to scalp or drop wheel and wear off wheel turning on siewalks and drive. My old mower was set exactly right but wore flat across. Dealer just set wheel in top hole and got the hell out of Dodge.

The info in the manual seems to contradict what you are saying. You said the manual states 1/8 to 1/2" above your normal cutting height. If your normal cutting height is 3", wouldn't that mean the wheels should be 3 1/8 - 3 1/2" above the ground with your deck set at 3"?

Anti scalp wheels are not meant to adjust your cut height. Like the name suggests they are there to prevent scalping on uneven ground. They are not supposed to be on the ground 100% of time, instead, they would only engage if hole or bump on the ground is hit. Mower deck is suppose to float on its hungers, not rest on anti scalp wheels. This is not rocket science, and it's not hard to understand. In your case, I would fill that hole with dirt and be done with it. The only thing I like in this video is that you are not using power tools on these cheap Chinese made plastic wheels. Happy mowing... Now, I am getting a cold one too.
