I love this video! I run a record label in Sweden. What I do is I put your music on the major streaming platforms, and then market it. I also do a bit of band management, and will be doing more of that in the future. I do nothing that the bands can't do themselves, but believe I do it more efficient and I can take advantage of marketing more bands and be even more efficient. I'm still a small business, but this Friday I'm actually releasing an artist with more than 20 years in the business and 10 studio albums released. Fun fact, he noticed me on social media and liked my business enough to contact me.

Ironically the opposite is true. Most great businesses started with no plan- just a passion. Obviously you studied business at university which is why you have no idea what you are talking about.

I've been looking into making my own label. I teach guitar/drum/bass lessons and I have a couple of really talented kids who I want to help produce and put music out there. could you do a video on contracts in a label. What should go on them, what percentage I fair etc etc. Great channel by the way discovered it a couple of days ago. Super helpful.

I just too long started my own record label but I was going for all digital thing with the music. I'm a artist myself so it is a lot of work as I see now. You definitely help me make a better plan on my record label. Just what I needed to hear. Thanks for the video 😉 I did not know what to do at this point, but you gave me some great ideas on what to do now

This is true for brand labels, but it's a bit more complex than that to be officially formalised if you're starting it as a real business venture. Other than registering with the government you need to sign up as a rights-holder with your countries neighbouring rights organisation and if you're releasing to other territories you need to sign an international mandate with them. If you're releasing in Germany you also need to get a "LC" (Label Code) from your NR organisation which can be embedded as metadata and/or placed with the copy on physical assets. Not to mention you need to have what you're offering put into writing with the right language so it's legally binding.

And this is what hurts a lot of bands. Some don't understand all of the legalities and need someone to put it in terms they can understand. We have to do the IRS Business EIN application and just filling out a small form was a nightmare...

I’ve been through the process of opening up a label strictly for my own band hoping it might swing a few extra doors open for me and possibly let get me on the radio easier when I send out my materials. Sadly I did not realize too many perks that way so now I’m back to square one, working on making the music amazing

Interesting. I've been putting out music on some of my musician friend's «labels», but they havn't actually done much apart from putting their logo on the CD. Do you think musicians are generally better of releasing their music without a label at all? I guess I feel like having some kind of label gives a certain credibility to the release, but I might just be nostalgic..
@louiseroman11455 жыл бұрын
that's exactly what I was thinking. just creating your own music label for the sake of having it mentioned on your cd and also, not having to let another company have a piece of your pie if you are a little known entity. but maybe people are not worrying about not having a label mentioned on a physical cd nowadays.

Thank you so much for this video! It has really given me more clarity. Can i ask you something? I live in a city in the Netherlands, and as a webdeveloer, designer, photo and videographer, my talent is not in singing/rapping obviously. But i have met the most underrated singers. They are smart, their voice is unique and their beats sounds like million views material. I just got so angry of this situation, because they HAVE the talent but they dont have the TOOLS/ MATERIALS/ CONNECTIONS. I offered them to make pictures, videos, websites and design stuff for them. Besides that i have a lot of connections with people in the music industry. My plan is to polish the diamonds up by putting strong content on their social media, professional website and everything they need to show their professionalism so people take them seriously. After that i want to introduce them to big producers and let them collab with bigger artists and let them work their way up. I know i am offering them value, but I don't know how to measure it in percentages to share profit in the future.... What is a healthy amount?
@marrallisa4 жыл бұрын
And what do you (guys) think of this overall idea?
@Denots2084 жыл бұрын
It's a great idea, many bands or atrists/singers don't have the knowledge or resources or time. The amount you charge should be correlated with how much you are doing. I would gladly pay 50% or more if the label could actually help me overall.
@glassfortressband43453 жыл бұрын
I know that right now I wouldn't be able to pay much since 50 % of we are getting right now isn't much from streaming. With merch sales it might come thru but that is the problem, if you take 50 % of sales or another percentage based upon what you provide when would you start taking it. Right now we have almost 2.00 from our streams but are awaiting the bigger months afterwards. So you would have to really be patient on the sales overall since these lag behind by 3 months or so. What if you charged a flat fee and would get tipped on top of that as the bands / artists get more successful. Just a thought or two. I love what you are doing to help others and I hope to help on the supporting side of things for those who are unsigned as like you I have been dismayed at seeing so much talent out there struggling trying to do it all themselves.

My new band, Fog Juice, is looking for help... only kidding. Problems with starting a label today are twofold... 1- You need even more money behind you to survive the bad times, especially with a band on board and 2- Everybody in a band today thinks they know it all already, so you're wasting your time.

Damien, what if you are a little known musician? If you have a physical cd, shouldn't you just slap your own "Label" onto it rather than have no Label mentioned at all? Or maybe it's o.k. to release a cd without a "Label" being mentioned? What do you think?

So what about filling out PRS and PPL forms? What should i put in the "Label" section? Do i just invent my label name and fill it in?
@DamianKeyes5 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, A lot of bands/artists just put 'unsigned' on the form as its a declaration that there isn't a third party owed any of the money. Another option is that you could set up your own label so it formalises what you are doing as effectively you are doing all the work a label would do however this isn't necessary at this point. :) Hope this helps dude
