I think I have solved the mystery of this song after listening to it. Probably hundreds of times in various forms. There is no underlying meaning that we can discover in this song. The key line is "all I know"... All he knows and all we can know is what he sees and what he feels. He feels love and attraction for the beauty of the other. That is it. It is simply an expression of his love and attraction that endures over time.

It remains a mystery. However, within the song of what it was he told her.... Why would he be sent low for speaking what she told him? that remains a mystery. Perhaps that she was married and was with him secretly.
