As stated; he's actually REALLY smart. His problem is, well... he's kinda naive and, most importantly; doesn't understand the concepts of 'tact' or 'lying'. Best part of the story was him talking down that one guy in charge of keeping an eye on the hostages and then being super worried about him later when he thinks he got killed only to be relieved and excited to see him again, with backup.
