Tacoma Rear Bumper DESIGN+BUILD: Part 2

Everybody knows that the sign of a truly competent overlander is a full size spare tire suspended gracefully behind their truck on a rugged, functional swing-out bumper. In this video I earn my swing-out merit badge, and I show you my entire fabrication process for the tire carrying capability of my new rear bumper. I'm currently working on my own DIY rear bumper and tire carrier swingout and WOW, this has made me want to re-fab the entire latch system. O_O Amazingly beefy build, dude I LOVE the off-the-cuff fab process, it's the only way to go. Big thumbs up.

Good video. I worry about the latch going right in front of the left tail light, and it doesn't seem like it has to. I'm guessing here, since you haven't shown it on the truck. Secondly, you haven't shown the "extra" stuff you wanted to carry on the bumper/swing out. As for welding. A butt joint welded up and then ground smooth has almost no weld left. Use the standard "V" to get more strength.

you have the whole shop there, why don't you weld prep all of your joints??... so much less sanding, more pen and strength... ALso sand all of the grey burnt edges of your laser cut parts. For a much happier MIg weld.

I generally do a lot more prep than I film…though that being said I do get lazy sometimes. I’ll generally take off mill scale with a wire brush and then will burn it in. The less critical the joint, the less time I spend prepping.

Instead of welding bolt to mount your spare tire you should have used wheel studs for your truck then if you ever need studs on the trail you can borrow them from the spare tire mount

Bevel, bevel, bevel. You butt welded all of your joints, then ground most of your welds off. Poor penetration.
