Hello..Great review. The main reason I'm not buying them again is that feature at the back of the shoe. Though I bought the right size, my achilles kept rubbing and caused blisters to both my feet plus the shoe material around that area was worn down. I actually use some tape now. I think they're more like mud trainers rather than rock trail ones. I only use them for training. For my races I use my Speedcross 5. Nikos, Greece.

I owned the speedcross 4. They were fine, but I was advised that I should not wear them in rocky areas or on asphalt. As well that they are more meant for muddy/sandy areas. I tend to do hardcore mountain hikes where there is a very big mix of terrains ranging from grass to boulders. My speedcross 4's soul quickly got destroyed from the rocks with chips in the studs and all that ugly stuff. I gave them back to the store because they did not warn me about how to use them. They gave me the advice to buy the spupercrosses for a more rounded shoe to suite my needs. I find them comfortable and more snug around my foot compared to the speedcross 4's, have yet to try them on the mountain! My only complain so far is the shoe laces dont really have a place to keep them like the speedcrosses.

I just bought this adventure, your points are just. Though I would add that running up a spring mountain would be awesome. The dirt up to the mud, advancing to the snow, then the ice! This shoe would be awesome!

I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I am mostly a road runner due to time, but been running on a trails once a week or once every other week. Love doing long runs up on Red Top Mountain when I have the time to make the drive. Started looking at trail shoes recently. The rock plate is the main reason for looking at trail shoes, tread hasn't been as big of a issue running on the trails.

QOD (yesterday) So a little late but I’m looking between the Speed cross and maybe the Dynafit Feline Up Pro. My trail shoes currently are the NB Heirro. They were great for the winter and spring but I used them as an approach shoe to Emperor Couloir (NW face of Torrey’s)on Friday and did not like them in the rougher terrain. Not the first time I’ve had this thought. I’ve tried on the Salmon’s in the past and really liked the fit. In fact I was going to get them but went with the NB because they were free. Is the Speed Cross a good all around trainer/racer for the Front Range? How do they compare to the S lab Sense or Ultra? Any thoughts on the Dynafit?

Can you enighten us on the water-resistance of the shoe? You said that it helped in the mud, but can you please elaborate? I know its not goretex and thats the only minus when thinking of buying them, but overall, how was it in muddy terrains? And how would it be in snowy ones? Like for e.g if I run on a snowy trail, will my feet get wet?

@mmmmmlemons5 жыл бұрын
I think they are for running in mud rather than on rocky trails. I use Salomon Fellraisers (similar lugs but lower drop) here in the UK in winter. It's all mud, no rocks and they work great for that. For rocky trails softer stickier lugs work better like Altra Superior.

PLATE - no not looking for any trail shoes right now - I have my stock of Altra Trail shoes for that and a backup Lone Peak 4 when the one I am wearing dies.. I am curious Seth - you do love the SpeedCross which also does not have a rock plate, is the extra cushioning enough to deal with the rocks. I would say similar to the speedcross it is built for muddy trails - although if I was looking for something like that I would spend the extra 20 bucks and get the speedcross 5s

Inov 8 trailroc 285s are waiting for me at my doorstep :-). For shorter trailraces, the rockplate for me is not really necessary, ground feel has priority, so I would take these over the speedcross. They seem pretty sweet for fell running as well.

Supercross. I have a pair of Challenger AT 4 from Hoka that are pretty good on the gravel and well formed trails but I’m looking at trying the new Speed Goat Or Stinson. Central highlands in Victoria has a variety of terrain....mud, clay, rock....gold mining country. I love having a heap of mid sole between me and the earth. It gives me an illusion of weightlessness and speed. It’s all in the mind of course. Any others I should look at?

Just purchased the new Topo MTN Racer. Haven't taken it out yet, but I love the Ultraventures, on which the MTN Racer is based. Would be great to see a review of a Topo shoe on here. In the realm of "foot-shaped" shoes, the Topos I've run in definitely surpass Altra in build quality and durability. I also prefer the Ultraventure's midfoot lockdown to the Timp 1.5, which always felt a little squirrely to me when running downhill.

Using this in rocky, muddy terrain up my local mountain in Norway :) a bit "soft" because of the lack of a plate, so you feel the rock a bit. But the drop and outer sole, together with the lugs, and flexibility makes it a good versatile shoe for me. Also, I love salomons- maybe even more than you😂 have some XA Pro's, speedcross 3 and 4, and looking for a more everyday use shoes for sparetime as well :)

@@giuseppeTTCC1960 He doesn't mean going out for a 50 mile run. He means that Seth only gives a shoe a full review after he accumulates 50 miles on it. ROCK PLATE - inov8 trail shoes dont have rock plates in them, this is a deliberate design to increase ground contact feel. It makes it easier for the tread to make contact with the ground and therefore increases the grip. It also reduces weight massively. I feel the rocks when in inov8 but it is better than feeling nothing and being out of control in high stack height/rock plate shoes.
