It's been quite a while since I've spent any time out on the trails in a Salomon trail running shoe so it was great to get my hands on a pair of their all new Wildcross!
The Wildcross is a super aggressive trail running shoe designed to handle technical, muddy, wet trails so perfect for a British summer! 😊
We've put 50 miles into the shoe on a mixture of terrain so sit back and see what we thought about this new grippy trail running shoe from Salomon.

Another excellent review, I am a big fan of Salomon stuff but yes its got its flaws and it is good that thing that you mention them in your review, like premature breaking in flex point. Wildcross seems like it is upgrading the Speedcross legacy. It is definitely worth checking out.thanks

Very similar to the Salomon Xa pro v8 which is my favorite because it checks so many boxes and fits. The contragrip outsole which both models share is excellent. Great review!!

Really gkad you enjoyed the review Jeff. I'd personally say the XA Pro is a much heavier, bulkier shoe than the Wildcross. I think the XA Pro is more suited to walking or treating now that trail running shoe technology has moved on a long way. Hi! Great video and review. In terms of sizing, I find that the Speed Cross needs to be 9.5 UK for me (I’m usually 9 UK). Would you say that for the Wild Cross I should stick with UK 9 or follow the Speed Cross sizing and get a 9.5 UK? I read that the Wild Cross is more true to size. It would be great to hear about your experience. Cheers!

Hi Joao It really depends what model of Speedcross you're running in? The Speedcross 3 and 4 were small on size but the newer Speedcross 5 is more true to to size. So if you're in an older Speedcross then I'd go down half a size in the Wildcross. I've you are going off a Speedcross 5 then I'd go with the same size of uk9.5 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

Sorry, I was referring to the Speed Cross 5, I do feel the 9.5 UK is slightly better for me as the 9 feels a bit tight on the toe box, especially when I'm running and bending it. However, with the Wild Cross having a wider toe box, I'm wondering if the 9 would suffice. Thanks for your suggestion, I will probably give both sizes a try. Cheers!

Another great review Loyd.. quality shoe , all them rabbit holes out on Mexico towans , have to keep my eyes pealed just walking out there . I'am sure you have run 1,000s of miles over the towans .

Great review. Only thing l don't like, but put up with, the bloody shoe lace system. I've had 2 different Salomon (Speedcross) where the laces snapped on me, once in the middle of a race, second time during a 5 day self support hike. Had they have used good old laces, would have been no problem. But like you said, " you either love them or hate them " (the laces)

Thanks George 👍 I've always got in with the lacing system and I've only had it snap once and that was on a shoe that had do 600 miles. Looking at these or the speed cross 5. I had the speed cross 4 however they were a little narrow. Need something aggressive for the UK mud. Are there any other similar shoes? Cheers

Hi Edward Your right the Speedcross 4 was a narrow shoe and the Wildcross definitely has more room in the toe box 👍 The Saucony Peregrine 10 has great grip and more room in the toe box than the Speedcross 4. I would definitely take a look at some of the Inov8 models. They make a few models with aggressive outsole grip and good width. However they are pretty striped back when it comes to cushioning and support! Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

It's a while since I ran in a Salomon shoe but have to say I am tempted by the Sense Ride 3. A certain Mr K Jornet says it's his go to shoe, so if it's good enough for him...

Not until early next year unfortunately 😔 Salomon have changed the internal sleeve in the shoe so it's super comfortable. They've made it lighter and it comes in an amazing black and red colour way! 😍

Fab review - I know it's not what it's designed for but how was it on tarmac? there always seems to be some to get through and I hate the Speedcross on wet tarmac, it's like ice skating!

Unfortunately any trail shoe with a deep lugs is going to struggle a bit on wet tarmac! Less contact area because you're running on the little lugs 😊 You're right about the Speedcross, I think the grip can also so struggle on some types of wet rock on the trails as well. The Wildcross is better than the Speedcross but you still wouldn't want to do a lot of tarmac in the shoe 👍 Thanks for watching Samphire I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙏

This will be the first winter where I run outside in a very long time. I've been very nervous about getting the right shoe for snowy slushy icy conditions, as a nasty slip and fall is what stopped my winter running in the first place. These look promising! My speed cross are so narrow in the toe, I just wear them for casual wear now. Should probably sell them.

I have a pair. They’re amazing, love these shoes! So stable. Accurate review. However, for durability, I did 35km, the left shoe sole started coming lose on the left where they bend, the toe rubber too. Returned for another pair, holding thumbs they keep up, else I will consider the Sense Pro 4.

Thanks very much 😊 I'd say its quite similar in fit. It's very fitted around the midfoot and then it has a nice roomy feel in the toe box. The heel of the Wildcross is different to the Predict but it still fits really well 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏

Do you think these would be ok for road running on snow? In my city (Winnipeg) our roads usually have packed snow with patches of ice and bare asphalt. I know there's nothing that's gonna be perfect but I think I can get these for about 120 CAD (under 100 USD) so I'm ready to pull the trigger as I'm sick of waiting for spring to do outdoor running but I'm always scared of injuries.

Having not run the shoe in those conditions it's hard to say Stephen? I would say it would handle the show ok. Not sure about patches of ice though! Also the shoe has a deep aggressive lug pattern so it's not going to be the most comfortable shoe on the bare asphalt. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

I'm really trying to understand the purpose of this shoe when looking at the rest of the Salomon lineup. Is the Speedcross a more premium product compared to this shoe? What about the Supercross and the Alphacross? Seems to me they came out with a bunch of new shoes without considering why those shoes were needed and the target audience for each shoe.

I think what we'll see happen is Salomon’s focus go from the Speedcross and move towards shoes like the Wildcross to replace it 👍 The Speedcross has a lot of heritage for the brand but its a bit clunky when you compare it to its competitors. The Wildcross is a more nimble, responsive Speedcross! 😊 As far as the Alphacross and the Supercross they're more enter level, solid shoes at a good price 👍 Thanks for watching the channel Chad it's really appreciated 🙏

Run 4 Adventure I had some Inov-8 Trailroc’s that I loved the feel of, but where too firm for longer days, and then Speedgoat 4’s that I loved the cushion of but weren’t quite stable enough. I have bad ankles ‘n heels from old injuries, so I’m always looking for that perfect balance of cushion and stability.

Oh ok, have you ever thought about the Peregrine 10? I'm a big fan of the shoe 😊 It's super stable, has a rock plate in the forefoot so great for rocky trails! It's cushioned with a top sole of PWRRUN+, so it's comfortable but not to soft and the grip is fantastic and really durable 👍

I love my speedcross 5, but now tend to prefer running in zero drop (Merrell trail glove 5). Are there any Salomon low drop? I like their cushioning as the Merrell get it a bit tough on the feet over 5km for me.

If you're after a lower drop Salomon trail shoe maybe check out the Sense Pro 4 or some of there S-Lab shoes. They tend to be around 4mm in off set in stead of the 10mm of a Speedcross which is pretty high in the heel for a trail shoe! I'm not sure they'll give you a lot more cushioning though as they are quite stripped back 🤔 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏

I'm not a massive fan of Gortex shoes to be honest! You loose a lot af breathability and if water gets in your shoes it can't get out 😔 I think it'll work well in snow, the lug is nice and aggressive and deep. Not sure about ice! @@Run4Adventure tried 2 times and blisters at my heels first right and now also left with the Peregrine 10... :( ... not even a compede second skin was able to overcome the pain.... with the torrent 2 I have not faced any issue of comfort... shall i give the peregrine a 3rd go?

No worries 👍 The Wildcross is lower in the heel, it's got a bit more volume in the toe box, more responsive. Personally I think it's a much better shoe to run in, I always found the heel off set to high on the Speedcross 4 and their was a lot of shoe! 😊 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

Struggling to make my mind up between Peregrine 10 and Wildcross..Help ! I'd say my trails are 50/50 mud/ single track trail, and fire-roads...would love to hear your opinion.

Hi Richard It really depends how wide your feet are? 😊 The Torrent 2 isn't narrow bit it's not that wide either, somewhere in the middle! Have you heard of the brand Topo? They do a shoe called the Mountain Racer, really good width in the toe box, similar to Altra but it runs off a higher heel off set instead of zero drop. It also has a Vibram Megagrip outsole, so loads of grip! 👍 The Saucony Peregrine 10 has good room in the toe box but it also comes in a width fit and that's a great trail shoe for UK conditions 👍 The Wildcross has a roomy toe box but again I wouldn't say it's a wide shoe. Salomon shoes are definitely made for purpose as opposed to looks, all the ones I've tried have run fairly slim on the width. Yet to be converted over to the 'Euro Bois'!

It really depends on what the terrain is going to be like and what time of year the race is Arron? They should reduce the stack making it more stable. I sold them after couple of fell runs. They are going in good direction though.

Hi Rene This isn't the shoe for you if you want to do some road running as well. It's got a 6mm lug on the outsole, so it wouldn't be that comfortable on tarmac! It's a soft ground trail shoe designed for muddy wet conditions and your right the lugs would wear pretty quick 😏 If it's a Salomon shoe you're after maybe check out the Sense Ride 3, this is a multi terrain shoe from Salomon. Hi Jon I'd always recommend going to a good running shop and trying some on if you can 👍 I wouldn't say it's super wide but for a Salomon shoes it does have a bit more volume in the toe box! The Wildcross is more responsive than the Speedcross. It's also more stable being lower in the heel off set Also the Wildcross locks down better, you feel the shoe hugs your foot and your held securely in the heel cup 😊 I personally think the Wildcross is a better alround compared to the Speedcross 👍 Hope this helps Michael and thanks for watching the channel I hope you enjoyed it 🙏

Yes Frazer 👍 The Wildcross has performed really well, especially in deep boggy mud! I still think my Peregrines offer more grip on wet rock though 🤔 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏
