Turning the giant attic above my workshop into a stock room for bikes. Yes, it has a fire pole

Did you know that there is an attic above my workshop? Well, there is, and it's enormous. With the recent completion of a staircase entering the attic from the outside, I'm putting it to use now to store bikes, parts, and tires. We also have a very interesting way to get back down to the workshop.

Seth, on your 2x8 comment for wheeling bikes up the stairs, one way to avoid your daughter playing with it is to have it hinged off the banister rail, that way you can have it in an upright locked position when not needed, and then when you need to use it unlock it and flap it down onto the stairs, you can even make it look like a facing board for the banister.

I was thinking just putting a gate at the bottom of the stairs. This way they are completely closed off to the kids when he's not up there. I'd also be wanting something around the firepole at the top to prevent any kid from falling through accidently.

Your videos helped get me into engineering. I watched you and Alex convert his van. I started watching your guys videos and that got me into mountain biking. Eventually my bike broke, so I watched your videos and park tool to fix it myself. This lead to me taking apart my bike and putting it back together and then I decided I wanted to design things and be an engineer. I’m now at Purdue Engineering which is one of the best engineering schools in the country, and I love it here. So indirectly your videos changed the course of my life. There’s always another optimization! So far on about 40 trips in and out I hit my head 2 times, so by the end of the year it should cost me 12 to 14 head impacts, or whatever it would take to make the opening bigger. There is a light and a fair bit of framing above the door and so it might not be possible to improve it much. Luckily I can just climb the firepole with plenty of headroom.

Never let it be said that there are not some EXTREME advantages to having to ride SMALL bike frames. Those of us who are 6 feet (180 cm) or more… Let’s just say a helmet would not be a dumb idea up in that attic. A place nearby to get your back worked on after being up there - priceless. I feel like the next step for organization is some sort of inventory system. 2 cheap barcode scanners (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs) running to a computer with some sort of inventory control database on it. Slap a barcode on every part that they'll fit on and all the bins, racks, etc and scan everything in & out. Will make keeping track of content bike stuff easier and will help keep track of when to buy more consumable parts for project/fix-it bikes too

Nice!!! I'm on board with re*cycling*... I've built myself a nice 2008 Focus cyclocross and got pretty much everything used but in really nice condition. The only really new parts were tires, rims and spokes... consumables like cables, brake pads adn topped it off with new handlebars and saddle. The bike feels solid and new and it's satisfying to know I used stuff that was probably just not the right fit for the previous owner but not worth throwing away!! Thank you so much for being one of the only KZbinrs who cares about our planet. It's gonna be exciting to see you give bites and extra decade and I can't wait to figure out how to find a used bike with modern geometry that I can fix up instead of buying one from Walmart because there's a lot of wastewater associated with making stuff from metal. There's no reason to buy a cheap bike that's new when there's an older one out there better than a cheaper one which might only need a few upgraded components to run like new. Have you thought about creating a bike repair franchise that empowers people to learn how to fix bikes and earn extra income on the side upgrading and fixing bikes for other people at affordable prices? Going to a bike shop is so expensive and it's also very time consuming to learn how to repair bikes on her own. It'd be great if there were a cheap way to have somebody fix our bike for us. And it'd be even better if there is an app. Bike mechanic freelancer.
