Seth, what you described would be considered Cultural Relativism. The reason this theory is weak is simply that it fails basic logical scrutiny. Cultural Relativism envokes the naturalistic fallacy, this means that it conflates what "is" with what "ought to be". Cultural Relativism also falls short in explaining concepts like moral progress, and it encourages blind acceptance of cultural norms. Your first point was strange as well, if a moral system is not consistent, it is not a system at all. It has nothing to do with it being immoral. Overall I enjoy listening to you engage in dialectic, good on you!

8:47 you said that you only care about the social contract today. If you don’t care about it if it changes, then you are in fact not caring about social contract theory as a whole. You are contradicting yourself because you want to care, and not care at the same time (care, as in if it changes). But then you also do not want to care about being consistent, which is sounds like you don’t care about morals in general. I say this because what is the point for caring about something that can change upon your whims and then you how can justify anything, including rape, because you aren’t consistent in your morals.

Clean meat (meat that is grown from a lab and only requires a single cell to be extracted from an animal in order to create unlimited supplies of meat) is 100% going to replace the slaughter route in the upcoming years, unless it gets suppressed on some Nikola Tesla level shit, or we all die first. Once that technology fully develops the meat could be grown to be at a quality that is equal if not higher than the best meat you can currently buy on the planet. They can grow the meat to be equivalent from eating meat from the healthiest, or most delicious version of that animal that can possibly exist, and produce it for significantly cheaper than animal slaughtering can ever hope to achieve. To combat Jordy tho, clean meat isn't vegan, it's real meat, just grown in a lab instead on the cow. They're chemically the same exact thing tho. Just like if you made air or water in a lab, it's still air and water. The world isn't going to be vegan, we're going to remain omnivores, we will just stop slaughtering animals for food in 1st World countries, and possibly the majority of countries if it becomes that accessible.

Man can someone discord me on this debate please. I think this is such a fun and productive topic to talk on and im kinda in the half way point. I don't really care morally wise about eating meat. I do eat free range only as i think factory farming is wrong and inhumane but i dont think eating meat is inheritantly wrong . But the more interesting topic is talking about the logistics of how much better vegetarianism could be. Some would argue veganism but that would be contradictory to a lot of vegans morals when looking long tern i dunno. Unfortunately most of my vegan/vegetarian friends views is "you're evil if you eat meat end of discussion" which as most of us know isn't helpful in this sort of discussion. Its better to show the benefits of one side rather than personally attack someone for their views which is what i have personally encountered so far. I still eat meat based on my views but would spin on a dime if the requirements were met for veganism /vegetarianism to be successful
@voluntarism3354 жыл бұрын
Veganism is only about the ethics not about logistics or anything else it's about animal rights. Would you want to swap places with a cow who is being sent to slaughter? They are here on earth for their own purposes they are not property and you do not have any right to use them for your own benefit. Free range is just as bad it is still enslavement, torture, abuse, rape and murder. You need to stop supporting these industries with your money.

@@voluntarism335 eating them is a part of nature Lions, coyotes, eagles, sharks, fish, bears Do you know what we all have in common? We all eat animals for our own benefit because that’s nature. Most of us don’t kill them for pleasure they’re killed because they’re apart of our diet, hell there are animals who actually do kill them for sport and just leave their carcass. Humans are just smart enough to figure out how to keep a supply of animals so that we can eat. How is us eating chicken any different from a coyote eating chicken? I’d say we’re way more humane than the animal because we have the decency of given the animal a quick death before we eat them.

It's going to be the same thing. Those guys can't contest Seth's position if he believe it to be a morally neutral act. They can't actually prove the animal holocaust to be wrong/immoral, all they can do is try to appeal to consistency. They have to build the case.
@TheAster36 жыл бұрын
@Ulf ViKings You claimed (in counter to my claim -- [morally neutral]) that they can, so what I am looking for now is a positive argument that PROVES that the animal holocaust is genuinely "wrong/immoral". That's the criteria to fulfil, your burden. Your example of how they "can" do such a thing is literally the exact same thing that Jordy appealed to in this debate. Testing the consistency of X justification (trying to find contradiction) =/= proving the animal holocaust to be immoral/wrong. And even if there were a contradiction in one's system it wouldn't therefore follow that it is necessarily immoral or something. You just failed by repeating the same mistake that Jordy did.

Ideally we shouldn’t be treated animals poorly and eating so much meat as it has effects on the environment and our health but a steady and sustainable diet with equal meat and veggies and grains is best and most ideal for human health also most domestic animals have no other value but to be a good food sourced for humans. because a prime steak smoked then reversed seared to perfection once in a while is great for you especially mentally🤤
@voluntarism3354 жыл бұрын
Veganism is NOT about your health the environment or any other non relative factor. It is ONLY about morals/ethics and animal rights it has nothing to do about you stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about the VICTIMS. Getting your information from animal industry funded studies is not smart. Meat is not healthy and even if it were it is immoral anyways to buy factory farmed meat as animals like cows get their throats cut open and they suffocate to death just so you can have meat on your plate. You need to stop because you are funding animal abuse and if you continue to do so you are an animal abuser.

Animals aren't as important as humans
@thegoddess16946 жыл бұрын
I agree, but they aren't so unimportant that they shouldn't be treated with respect and ways to minimize the suffering of these animals is reduced to near non existent to non exitent levels arent created. The fact of the matter is in our current state biologically we chemically, physiologically need meat for proper development. We cant onpy consume vegetables and other types of proteins and maintain a baseline healthy existence. Not to say you will die or be extremely malnourished but your health, mental strength, growth and development not only physically but meta physically will be slower or reach a lower peak. The type of protein is irreplaceable at the moment for us. But I do think our diets should consist of more green leafy, fruits vegetables more so than meat. Perhaps a 30 to 70 ratio or something along those lines. What we should be more concerned about rather than eating certain types of edible nourishing foods is if any of those foods have been tampered with like the majority of food sold in supermarkets and restaurants have been and are being. This is one of the real serious problems plaguing our planet at the moment. (As for morally if you dont want to buy from and support these flawed company practices then perhaps support local farmers or find the best possible alternative.) (Also it is not stupid to not want to eat meat for these reasons it is actually commendable and it should no matter what be the goal for our civilization one day no matter how long it takes for us to reach it. To no longer need meat to maintain and also to evolve our minds and improve our health and bodies further with the aid of technology so that meat is no longer needed. But perhaps we cannot rush perfection but try to remain as close to it as possible.)

@@thegoddess1694 kl I agree to that premise but plz don't stawman me Animal welfare is important I said humans are more important not that animals aren't. All I'm saying is that some people treat pets better than some humans Going of aristotle's on the Soul the more intelligent a creature is the more valuable they should be Eating meat is a natural source of protein that I am incline to But I can understand why vegans can't eat meat as they show compassion, and compassion is a sign of intellect that animals can't show towards its prey I believe that both eating meat or not is moral dependly Eating meat could be considered unethical as of the lack of empathy shown Some could argue eating meat is human instinct Then others argue that is primative and shows a lack of civil and evolved thought Cultured meat could be a good alternative however many could argue it is prosthetic and unnatural Not eating meat means you will probably attain less protein than a no meat eater Conclusion there litteraly is no right or wrong answer
@thegoddess16945 жыл бұрын
@@KingBullet123 well there may be a right answer we simply do not have all the information. As for me strawman you, I wasnt. I was simply saying they shouldnt be as unimportant as to be rendered to a degraded state. That degraded state is still above a potential worse fate that of which I did not state therefore, I wasnt creating a bipolar or dualistic perspective to what you said. Simply acknowledging the fact that what you said was vague and needed clarification so I clarified it. Its all percentages really. As for the right and wrong thing. There is always a right and wrong. If one thing we do can be considered right or wrong then everything should be able to have the same reasoning applied. If one thing in a reality cannot be determined right or wrong or whatever you think that is then nothing can and we might as well do anything always, no matter what. You see it becomes very senseless once you get into the details of such a claim such as it doesnt matter. Because all we are ever trying to do is make sense of ourselves and our actions and thoughts. That in and of itself is proof that we are concerned with and or are incapable of behaving in a way where nothing matters and we do things for what amounts to no reason or random untelated reasons. Because we strive for sensibility and connection, and reasons and because the reality reflects such there is objectively a right way to everything. Now all we need to do is figure out what that is. As for veganism. I am still supporting the idea that more vegetables is superior to a diet with a predominance of meat or other types of food. The reason being that many vegetables and leafy foods are good for the human body to ingest in that they can heal and cure diseases though even by today's standards as incurable. Diet is that crucial. Also samon is a very good meat to ingest compared to say chicken or beef. Even though we should be able to eat anything obviously in the right dosage relatively speaking if you want peak performance and dont want to limit your mental processing and your ability to perceive things that many times aren't clearly definable to are known senses. Samon is better than those meats. For various reasons. But whay I meant by we need the right information is that, the human body can take a profound amount of punishment before anything serious occurs. Because of this we could be living years of our lives in a state of legit suffering without knowing it, but have become so acclimated to it, addicted to it that we continue and are content with low yield from it. The moment we step out of that our perspective shifts drastically. Now what information can shift this argument. Well water. They say we need 8 cups of water a day or some ridiculous number, which is false. The human body does not need that much water a day. In fact Id go as far as to say drinking water every day isnt even good for the human body if you want peak human function. They say you will die if you don't drink water for three days. Even end up in hospital by day 2 But this is simply untrue. I am currently on day two and am completely unphased and actually feel jacked in, less hungry, and more energy. All im trying to say is, we need to be careful before we make absolute claims without a sufficient amount of evidence to support them. This would also mean you yourself would have to try the vegan diet for you to truly understand the benefits because otherwise you will be taking others peoples words and experiences as cannon so to speak. And though those are important, and science community is important they have a tendency to lie and protect special interest groups. So its probably best you at least get contrary information though this can be sometimes difficult to find.
@KingBullet1235 жыл бұрын
@@thegoddess1694 To clear this up I'm not a vegan because of my weakness to resist meat. So relatively speaking in a vegan future many people would look back on us like we were savages. This would go into themes of moral relativism, nihilism and Absurdism etc. I don't really want write an essay so I won't go into it too much. If you want debate the topic of importantance and meaning on discord I don't mind. There is no right and wrong since they are constructs. My value of humanity is morality relative to the perspective of organisms. We have higher conscience than animals and plants. They are our lessers explained by aristotle's on the Soul to a degree. It not the same as being handicapped since we require them in society to value our Humanitarian and moralistic system. Without this lack of compassion we would degrade our other values too. I'm not saying let's kill all the animals, but more so don't use them as a source of protein. Leave them alone animals are important but we take priority. Because we don't have infinite time and resources. Because they require resources and space to farm that Could be used for humans. It is inefficient and humans currently are the most efficient evolution of an organism so we take priority. Efficient in survival, sustaining and multiplying of course. Better resource of foods and energy maybe insects, plants, fish, eggs and a very few animals for renewable sources. Our actual existence is irrelevant and meaningless but we have to live with that and have a self realisation that we are an anomaly within an infinite fractal universe/reality. So I take note of camus' philosophy on absurdism and just continue to exist normally.
