Seth! When I lived in nyc one of the many odd jobs I had was selling T-shirts at the Broadway shows. I worked at the Winter Garden Theatre selling tchotchke for Cats when Liz Callaway was Grizabella...this was 97 I think?? She mixed the entire song "Memory" btw. It was flawless even on matinees. I would watch the show a lot, but sometimes just hang out in the lobby; you could still hear the entire show and by then I knew it backwards and forwards. One particular show I was out in the lobby and at the mid point in the song "Memory" where Grizabella falls to the stage, the audience applauded. They never did that, but they were so thrilled with her I guess they couldn't help it?! Did they think it was over, what was happening? I ran inside to see. I got there just as Sillabub was doing her airy breathy little part, and really who cared bc the audience was still applauding...Liz must have been really feeling it bc she stood up to finish the song and deliver the big "Touch Me!" moment and gave that audience FULL BELT! It was magnificent. And LOUD! And they ate it up! And I felt like I experienced something a gay musical theatre boy only gets to see once in his lifetime!

I wish Liz Callaway sang every role on Broadway period. She's so good, and a testament to solid vocal training grounded in classical technique.

Such a clean, natural voice. She doesn't embellish, she doesn't oversing; she just lets it flow from her. That's *real* talent.

I love this deconstruction. I'm obsessed with this recording- and Jonathan Tunick's orchestration is so brilliant. I love to listen over and over again the strings as the climb to the finish after "As I am part of what's to be..." starting at 9:31- it's so exciting!

Seth, I particularly love the accompaniment at the end of the piece with the stings providing the climax playing triplets underneath the horns, bass, and drums pushing the downbeats. The strings at the beginning of the second verse are exquisite, following the trombones and horns in the bridge.

A broadway landmark. Callaway is a legend -- she STOLE Broadway in the spot light with this song. She had amazing control. The rest of the show is a masterpiece. 13 years later, still listening to the great Seth Rudetsky.

I'm so glad more mix and head voice is surfacing! It's not all about the belters, although you wouldn't know it now a days.

Have you ever considered uploading the song that you're deconstructing as a video? With just like a picture to accompany it? I can't find some of the songs you've deconstructed in the past which is a bummer... like White Boys from Hair
