Pumpkin Hill is quite literally the first song Tomoya Ohtani composed for the entire Sonic series. Dude's a MASTER at hip-hop beats, and basically every other type of music. What an absolute legend. And Hunnid-P (the rapper and lyricist for the Knuckles songs, and yes, he's from New York, which you predicted here) is a garbage human being, but he's got excellent flow and a relaxing voice. Perfect fit for these super chill songs.

for added context, Hunnid-P is a garbage person because when his checks from the games ran out, he started claiming the music on KZbin and then tried suing SEGA for owning the music. They own the music properly and he had written contracts to take in royalty checks for the music, but eventually the money he got was little to nothing so he simply thought if he claimed all the music he was involved in he wouldn't have to work ever again but the courts easily called him an idiot and he got canceled for this. again, good flow and a decent artist but not a decent person

Jesse’s only scratched the surface of SA2’s soundtrack so far, it’s definitely one of the more diverse in the series, as every playable character Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Eggman and Rouge, all have different music genre’s for their character themes and stages. What I really love about the rap vocals that are used on all of Knuckles stages in particular, is the little bits of storytelling and Knuckles attitude that’s portrayed in them (Death Chamber being the best example). As far as Pumpkin Hill goes, it was one of the very first tracks Ohtani composed for Sonic. Making hip hop and electronic beats was pretty much his specialty, before he started composing more grander pieces from Sonic 06 onwards.

Finally, we get one of the Knuckles stage themes on the channel. I'm sure there were a lot of people looking forward to this one lol. Sonic Adventure 2 is structured in a way that has the player go through the story from two different perspectives, with three different playable characters in each. One for the protagonists, called the "Hero Side", consisting of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. And one for the antagonists, called the "Dark Side", with Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and Rouge. All of the characters get their own unique stages, and all have a certain genre of music to go with them. Pumpkin Hill here is a track for one of Knuckles's stages. Also, each of the 6 playable characters have a theme song, separate of the stage themes, that have vocals from the perspective of each character. E.G.G.M.A.N. here is the character theme of Dr. Eggman (not a stage/level theme). Now, Knuckles's stage themes also take this approach, (as well as a couple for Shadow) having lyrics from the perspective of the character. But it isn't the norm, as most stage themes are instrumental. Hopefully I explained that well enough in a way that makes sense.

Knuckles has also been Black-coded for a while, hence the hip hop tracks. I'm certain him being coded as Black is also at least part of the reason why Idris Elba does his voice in the show and movies. I love all the character themes in SA2, but "E.G.G.M.A.N." is probably the best of them. Of the many countless artists who've been brought in to make music for sonic games: Crush 40, Kellin Quinn, Bowling for Soup, etc; none of them had the sheer creative genius of Hunnid-P who, when told to make a few songs for all of Knuckles' levels in Sonic Adventure 2, took the deeply inspired idea to rap from the perspective of Knuckles for all of the songs, in character as Knuckles, insanely literally, going so far as to narrate things Knuckles does in the level itself at times. An absolutely inspired artistic decision.

This is a good song, it makes sense why it's well known. Now E.G.G.M.A.N. is a fun one, I love the ratchet noises and the overall the mechanical vibe of the song. The vocals are fun (not Johnny Gioeli of Crush 40, this is Paul Shortino) Jun Senoue (the main guitar player for Crush 40) did make this song so that's probably why you thought it was Crush 40. It was the first and I believe only time Eggman was a playable character. Robotnik and Eggman are the same character. When it comes to genre variety Sonic Adventure (especially 2) is a whole ass cornucopia of variety, as many comments have probably pointed out by now, Sonic Adventure 2's OST is heavily operating on the premise of "each character has a set of songs that have their own genre that is heavily associated with their personality and the lyrics very much are on the nose 'stream of conscious' of the character they're associated with, especially their theme songs." With Pumpkin Hill, its a kind of a halloween-ish haunted graveyard kinda place and in the lyrics you're hearing Knuckles basically self-talk to give himself courage to forge ahead even though deep down he is afraid of ghosts. E.G.G.M.A.N. is Eggman's theme song that plays whenever he's the focus of scene he's in, like he's having his moment of being a bad ass or what not. The song is about how he sees himself as a genius and mastermind.

If you haven't do so already, i'd look up some footage of the Pumpkin Hill stage in game, it even out-Halloweens the Nightmare Before Christmas! But yes, Hip-hop in a Sonic game: All of Knuckles stages in Sonic Adventure 2, as well as his main character vocal theme in it and SA1, have some combination of Rap, R&B, and similar funky genres: This is both because Knuckles was kinda Black coded (Sega designed his spines to look like dreads, his shoes have Rasta colors, some early marketing even gave him a Jamaican accent), but also because his stages are more slow, exploration based levels where you find hidden items (hence the lyrics here mentioning searching or sensing things) and Knuckles's personality is (in contrast to Sonic who is kinda a brash, always moving forward free spirit who never questions his gut) is pretty introspective and questions and ponders his heritage and purpose in spite of his tough quiet exterior: Slower rap and R&B fits the slower and more chill vibes of those stages, and allows you to get a better look into Knuckle's head and the atmospheric elements of the music reflects his nature a bit. Likewise, as many people have likely commented (and I know have in past videos, I was one of them!) each character's main vocal theme and their stage themes are a different genre or subgenre of music. Sonic is upbeat rock, Shadow is more industrial and emo rock (both of which have speedy platforming stages). We already talked about Knuckles and his musical genre and gameplay, but his Dark story counterpart sharing his gameplay style, Rouge (a femme-fatal bat thief and secret agent) has jazz and bossa nova music with spy or heist movie vibes. Finally Tails has rock with electronic elements, with more bass, keys, and some synth, while Eggman's tracks are similar, but with a more moody tone, more synth, and often with mechanical clanks, grinding, and whirring noises (both Tails and Eggman are in mechs which lock on and shoot enemies). Speaking of Eggman, E.G.G.M.A.N. is his main vocal character theme: These take the same musical genres that character's stage theme has, but add lyrics that are basically the character describing themselves and their personality, motives, etc in variously more abstract or more explicit ways (As I said, this is something all of Knuckle's stage themes do as well, though more from what he's thinking for that stage). With E.G.G.M.A.N. this is pretty obvious: He's a genius who schemes, he makes machines, he wants to take over the world and to take out sonic, etc, and all of that comes up in the lyrics I don't think you've reacted to any of the other character vocal themes, but "Escape from the City/City Escape" and "Keys to the Ruin/Pyramid Cave" are two of Sonic's stage themes, and "Supporting Me" is a boss theme where you play as Shadow and mostly sticks to his musical genre and motifs (unlike the other boss themes which tend to be their own thing). "Live and Learn" is the main theme for the whole game (and the true final boss theme).

So, for added context, the term Butt Rock was originally a jab at this music because Arin Hanson From Game Grumps made fun of it and called it that, but people all over the world will argue differently but that was when Sonic music started getting called butt rock. As in shitty rock and roll. The original term But Rock comes from the phrase, "Nothing but rock," a phrase often used in radio's. that unofficial term was originally used for music you'd hear only on the radio, which is hilarious here because this music you would never hear on the radio strictly because its video game music. people argue its a compliment to have this music be called butt rock but make no mistake, its an insult, no endearing term has the word, "butt" in it

A few of the Sonic Adventure era games, the main ones with multiple characters, started having character themes with vocals... In the case of Sonic Heroes there were team themes... Each reflecting the character... And actually, in Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman was one of the main playable characters and has a theme (although they do start having vocal themes for some final bosses too, it's typically not from their perspective, I think.. I might be forgetting something)... On top of that, Knuckles actually has vocal tracks for most of his levels in Sonic Adventure 2... Maybe Rouge too, although of a different style... Their levels are more on the slower paced, treasure-hunting style... Maybe that's why they went with vocal tracks, to help keep the levels more interesting. Anyway, if you get to check out the other themes and such of the Adventure games, Sonic Heroes and maybe Sonic 06 (you may have already listened to some, I forget), you might notice that each character kinda has a different style of song... Sonic leans towards rock, maybe leaning into pop punk or ska punk or something in some games... Tails is a bit more on the pop rock side maybe... Knuckles has the Hip-Hop/RnB... Rouge has a kind of jazzy espionage vibe, while Shadow has a darker/heavier rock vibe... I'm not sure if it's quite metal, but almost? I expect you probably wouldn't do it, but I think playing Sonic Adventure might elicit some interesting reactions out of you that would be fun to watch... Sonic Adventure is so different from the original games in various ways lol. If you think the music is crazy... Oh boy... Sonic Adventure has like 6 different characters, each with their own mechanic... Like one does fishing lol.

The Siivagunner channel has a version of E.G.G.M.A.N. where the backing tracking is replaced with Sharp Dressed Man and it fits

For as much as Sonic fans argue about the dumbest things regarding the franchise, the one thing everyone agrees on is that Sonic has banger music.

You need to look at It Doesnt Matter as well. That song to this day sums up Sonic perfectly.

In SA2, there's 6 characters, and each of their levels are represented by different musical genres. Sonic's levels lean torwards the rock/punk vibe. Tails' levels are also rock but differ from Sonic's in that their more electronic. Knuckles' levels, as you can hear, are rap/hip hop. Shadow's levels are rave (except for Sky Rail, which is more rock, since early on it was supposed to be a Sonic level.) Eggman's levels are interesting, they're a kind of weird combination of industrial and techno, though it varies. Rouge's levels are jazz, and are actually some of my favorites in the game.

Pumpkin Hill is a stage theme, while EGGMAN is a character theme. The Adventure games have pretty varied music; various flavors of rock, hip hop, jazz, electronic, etc. The character themes in particular do a really great job of getting across what the characters are like. It Doesn't Matter (Sonic's theme), Believe in Myself (Tails), Unknown from M.E. (Knuckles), etc. all do a great job with this.

I think in terms of the characters’ sound we experienced songs for Sonic, Knuckles, Eggman, and Shadow so far. Rouge and Tails are the only ones left so far, I think you’ll especially get a kick out of Rouge’s themes. As far as my favorite Knuckles’ themes go I love ‘Dive into the Mellow’ and ‘Space Trip Steps’. Tomoya Ohtani can cook.

If ANYONE HASNT SAID IT YET. Each of the characters in Sonic Adventure 2 (battle), have their own genre in music in their respective levels. Knuckles is Rap. Sonic is hard rock (crush40) Shadow is house music. Rouge is Jazz band. Tails is rock(?) Eggman is metal rock mix And technically while she has no levels, Amy has a few themes, and it's Girl pop.

The knuckles levels are a lot more chill and slow paced as you run around a large map trying to dig up 3 pieces of the Master Emerald using a radar. The tracks are iconic for being so bad they're good. The beats and vocals are solid, it's just the lyrics are so silly and bad, just in a charming way.

You've got a lot of different playable characters with their own unique gameplay styles and stage in the Sonic Adventure games, and they have unique music styles too. Pumpkin Hill is of course a Knuckles stage, and in SA2 him and Rouge the Bat have big open stages focused on treasure hunting rather than going fast. Knuckles and Rouge stages have the best music too, imo.

Hey Jesse, you should absolutely listen to "I Am... All of Me" by Crush 40 and "All Hail Shadow" by Crush 40, they're both Shadow the Hedgehog songs and they're really good! I'd highly recommend them! The first one is from the game Shadow the Hedgehog, the other one is from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.

You need Kick the Rock from Sonic Adventure 2 now. And as a Sonic adventure request; "Theme of E102" paired with "Crazy Robo ...Boss: E-101R" The first song leads into the second as long as you have the OST version of the first. In response to your E.G.G.M.A.N. response, you need to react to Metallic Madness act 1 and 2 from Sonic mania. You'll love it.
