Crisis City stage in Sonic the Hedgehog(2006) is separated into four sections, so the music is also separated into four sections. The flames, skyscraper, tornado, and whirlwind. It is unlike other Sonic music because Sonic is in a very rare situation where he is in a huge metropolis which has been completely burned down and the ruins are on fire. And there is a section when a literal fire tornado chases you, so it is very urgent after all. Sonic Generations is the game where some kind of time merge happen and the young sonic(classic) meets the old sonic(modern) and experience past memories together. So you play the stages of same concept as two different sonic, and the music is different too.

Sonic '06 story deals with time travel, so Crisis City is a level which takes place in a city which is fully apocalyptic, it's just fire and rubble and demons everywhere. That's why I love the violin in this piece, it feels like it represents Sonic himself, an element which shouldn't be there cutting through all the chaos, serene but still with a huge sense of speed.
@lambousginiguccigod20073 ай бұрын
I love that violin comment. Sonic has the His world motif constantly played by violins so its only natural for us to think that way when we hear it in crisis city or anywhere really. I genuinely wish they use the motif again with violins and they should add more violins in general because violins just reminds me of sonic now.

It's interesting, I love the '06 version and Generations versions for practically opposite reasons; I like how long and spontaneous and loose the original 06 version is, but I also love the Generations versions for taking different parts of it and being kind of concise, tidied up versions of it. And obviously I love the approach they had to different instrumentation between classic and modern.

Hey I just want to say a huge thank you for making these kinds of videos I really appreciate it. Crisis City from Sonic 06 has always been one of my favorites. I've been listening to it since I was young and for the longest time. I’ve always gravitated towards video game music more than anything else and it’s still the same today. Sometimes after talking with friends and others, I feel like my taste in music is pretty niche. It often makes me feel a bit different or out of place because no one I know shares the same passion for VGM. But seeing you enjoy it as much as I do always brightens my day. And today after watching your reaction video to what is probably my favorite soundtrack ever, it honestly meant so much. Seeing you enjoy and praise it as one of the best you’ve ever heard brought tears to my eyes. It’s not every day I come across someone who shares my love for this iconic song. This really meant the world to me thank you so much for that. I respect you a lot and I’ll keep supporting you however I can.

Most levels in Sonic 06 have 2 sections, each with their corresponding version of the level music (the most striking example could be Flame Core; Flame Core Volcano and Flame Core Cavern manage to feel like completely different themes). However, the flagship levels, Kingdom Valley and Crisis City, have 4 and FIVE sections respectively, and, rather than merely having multiple versions, those levels get a suite approach to their theme, with separate movements for each section. Crisis City only has 4 movements in its theme, as no character goes through all 5 sections; at most they go through 4 of them, and so all 4 parts of the suite get to play. Evidently, give Kingdom Valley and both Flame Cores a listening!

I remember looking at magazines and trailers for sonic 06 back in the day and being so perplexed by seeing Sonic running in an apocalyptic setting. A City sinking in lava with monsters crawling around, and this song is just chef's kiss. This whole game's OST sounds like a AAA action Rpg, the violins are usually present and its got a fast beat classical feel a lot of times. Levels have different parts of the music track playing for them but when put together like this video it doesnt loop and just has a song that evolves with so much personality. Sonic 2006 is so special to me, even if its not looked at in a good light with its laughable story and glitchy nature. I love the themes and art direction for it. I also keep aquatic base on a playlist of favorite water vibe songs. If you are hungry for more you gotta check out Kingdom Valley's song.

Secret Answer to the question at the end, spoilers inbound: "The whole city is on fire!" So roughly about 200 years before this stage takes place (rest of the game mostly takes place in the present), a character died and a monster named Iblis was released which wreaked havoc and destruction on the world. Also, Iblis is basically one half of a sun god and is basically the fire half which is why everything is on fire.

@KOTSOSMC20023 ай бұрын
Crisis City represents chaos thematically, not only in its setting like others have already explained. We're 200 years into the future, a future destroyed and engulfed by flames. A newcomer called Silver the Hedgehog gets shown by a time traveling God that Sonic is something called the "Iblis Trigger" and is responsible for the world's post-apocalyptic nature and sets off to kill him and change the future's fate. Sonic and Shadow find themselves in this future, Sonic runs through this destroyed city trying to find his way back home and discover the truth, Shadow apprehends the God I mentioned before who tells him humanity will eventually inevitably betray him cause they're afraid of his power and they will kill him. He reveals he's evil and asks Shadow to join him, where Shadow gives him the middle finger and vows to fight for the protection of humanity even if they will eventually betray him. So yeah, all of this + the flame tornado, skiing down falling skyscrapers, fighting Gods, death and destruction, people already explained the levels themselves. Crisis City IS CHAOS INCARNATE in the best way possible. It's one of the highlights of the entire Sonic franchise. The way you described it as urgent and everything at the end was pretty much spot-on.
@fable233 ай бұрын
Sonic Generations is kind of a celebration of the series as a whole, featuring stages (and songs) from all across Sonic's history. What's really cool is that each stage gets a classic (side scrolling) and modern (3D) interpretation, with mixes to match. So older songs are given a modern version, while more recent songs (like this one) basically get 'what if they were released in the 90s" remixes. And that's how you get Crisis City (90s Dance Hall Mix)

You know, there’s a saying of sorts in the community that even if a Sonic game is bad, you can count on the OST to deliver regardless. Sonic 06 is perhaps the best example of this as it has, in my opinion, one of the greatest OSTs in the series. All of the people that worked on it truly gave it their all and it really is a shame that it has to be attached to one of the worst games in the series.

I kept forgetting that this was supposed to be fire-themed, because I was getting straight-up wind. 'Urgent' is 100% the correct word, but the strings seem to duel with that urgency, free and unbothered and self-assured that they can _meet_ that urgency because they have a wide-open sky and they're doing kickflips off the airwaves. It sounds like the relief that comes when you leave doubt behind and fly. I'll have to check out your other elemental vids, because I'm super curious how these things are connoted beyond simple association.

Also Crisis City is 200 years in the future where the world is apocalyptic and in ruins, everything is on fire, and the entire city is broken into pieces as it sits on an ocean of endless lava. It's a timeline where the Sun god was split into 2 parts, one being the devilish mastermind, the other being a large shape-shifting beast made of stone and lava that caused the destruction. Sonic and his friends get sent to the future by the villain at some point, where he can't meddle with the villain's plans. Shadow and his company also landed in this future at some point before meeting up with Sonic. And a new character, Silver, is FROM this ruined future, which is why he's come to the past to stop the catalyst of the destruction from occurring.

I love you saying Crisis City sounds like a spy movie because a lot of people are reminded of Mission Impossible with parts of this track. I think also, if you actually listen to multiple tracks in a particular game you will see a general theme in the soundtrack of that game. Because you heard 2 Sonic and the Black Knight tracks 2 years apart and don't remember the first of them. From your perspective, you are just hearing different Sonic music that sounds all over the place. But if you listen to more tracks specifically from Sonic 2006, you'll notice a lot of them have an "epic" semi-orchestral semi-rock or digital grittiness to them and a little acoustic, pop, and classical sprinkled about. Meanwhile Black Knight has a slight orchestral blend to a heavy butt rock sound because it's mixing an "extreme" vibe with triumphant "kingdom!" motif. Sonic and the Secret Rings, if you ever listen to that, you'll notice has a mix of rock and a sound that clearly plays off the Arabian Nights theme of the game. Sonic Frontiers played on heavy melancholy and hardcore almost-if-not-metal music as a duology. Sonic Adventure 2 has a heavy butt rock sound encompassing tracks that otherwise express different environments with just that genre of music. But it also had sub-genres assigned to each character. Knuckles had slow chill hip hop. Rouge had more jazzy music. Eggman had this almost techno rock sound. Sonic Unleashed heavily plays into the the environment of each location with how they portray the track. So they'll actually somewhat emulate the sound of that cultural inspiration. And there's many more examples. PS: Sonic Generations is a lighthearted game that has Modern Sonic get sucked into a time limbo where he meets "Classic Sonic", himself from the past, designed like his 90's portrayal. All 9 stages of the game are played twice, once as Modern Sonic in then-modern gameplay and level design, while Classic Sonic will play like an oldschool side scroller based on the Genesis gameplay. The extra gimmick is that each the 9 stages are ONE stage from each main title Sonic game over the course of 20 years. The first stage being from Sonic 1, second stage from Sonic 2, and so on until the most recent main line title prior to Generations. SO all the music from those stages are the music from the original games... but remixed. There's a classic remix and a modern remix for each. Just for context as Crisis City is the 7th stage in the game representing Sonic 2006.
