I have a 1938 Craftsman 2 twin garden tractor and it runs like a beast

So glad you made the video! Thank you. I'm working on my dad's 422707-1510-01 (MTD). 95 sounds about right. I've heard these are among the best B&S put out.

Big help. Just picked one of these up. Guy who sold it said carb issues. Carp indeed needed serious cleaning, but afterwards it was idling funny. I knew it had to be something simple. This video helped a lot. As you said, just isn't a lot of information out there on these anymore. Thank you!

I have this same engine on a 1996 Murray riding mower. Just finished rebuilding the fuel pump and was looking for the adjustment procedure for the governor. Thanks for your splendid video it answered my questions.

I'm like you, I have an opposing twin engine and tried to find the correct set up of the throttle linkage and governor. You have the best if not the only setting on KZbin that works.

Thanks. Let me know if you need anymore video up close or anything like that.

That is the best engines briggs put out look at it 20 years old still running great with only few gasket repairs
@TractorMonkeywithJL5 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's a simple and beefy design.

I've got a '94 Craftsman 18 hp BS opposed twin I/C Gold lawn tractor ; these are the best engines Briggs ever made, doesn't known it's not a bush hog. Thanks for the governor info, mine is surging, think it's a low speed jet issue, but I'll check the governor while troubleshooting. Thanks ; good info

Thank you for this info. Just got a used mower like this and repaired the fuel pump and replaced spindle bushings. Great mower !

I thought I was going crazy after I watched a some you tube videos say turn right.. My mower sounded like a Harley and would do 20mph in 3 High.... I KNEW that was wrong... but found out a Briggs Twin will run at ~4500RPM... I figured out guess what you have to turn it to the left on our engines and brought it down to a reasonable (sustainable) 3600rpm (no load). Great video... glad I (WE) were correct.

I had the engine apart replacing gaskets before I made this video. I wish I had made a video of the governor while I was in there to add a visual to what I was talking about here. Glad this video helped.

I followed these steps but the screw turned very minimally. Do I have to loosen that bolt all the way? How much is the screw going to turn? I’m still having issues with my governor.
@TractorMonkeywithJL Жыл бұрын
It's been several years since I made that video. I'm no expert and that was the only time I've had that engine apart. In order to give a correct answer, I would have to go and mess with the governor again. It's running good so I don't want to do that. Hope you understand. Thanks for watching and I hope you can get it working.

It helped me buddy, I found one of these on a rotten mower laying on its side, she turned, I opened everything up, replaced all gaskets and seals. Oiled her up and she ran like a dream. I’ve got to replace the diaphragms in the fuel pump or whatever. But the last piece of info about the five or was all I needed.

Wow, that sounds so sweet. I have the 16.5hp waiting for me to get around to restoring it. If it sounds half that good I’ll be over the moon. Thanks so much for posting. I will definitely be needing this. :-)

Sounds good, I have the 14.5 hp opposed twin. Probably close to the same age. Great engine just finished carb clearing and running new fuel hose.

I put one of these engines on a Bunton walk behind in 2000. Mowed for 15 years with it. Then I picked up an Encore walk behind with a 14 kawasaki that was pull start. Got tired of the pull start and rebuilt this engine and put it on the Encore last year. These engines outlast what they were put on, if treated right.

I swapped a 18 hp b&s opposed twin into an mtd, replacing an ohv 14.5 hp single cylinder b&s. The twin runs smoother and has more torque. These twins are simple and reliable, too.

Any one know how getting rid of the governor works?
@johnpalma7265 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what videos you're refering to but most of the one's i've seen about Briggs 18 hp type engines say to turn the governor shaft left (counterclock wise) while maintaining wide open throttle.J ust my $0.02. Thanks

Look on-line for a B&S repair manual for those.

I bought new MTD YARD machine 18.5 hp in 1997 still going but leaks oil like crazy. Can't find the leak. Is there any place particular where these engines leak? Thanks Great Video
@TractorMonkeywithJL2 жыл бұрын
I don't know, (I'm no expert) but mine was leaking too so I pulled the engine out and took it apart. I replaced all the gaskets and seals with a kit I found on amazon. I suppose the main culprit was probably the main gasket where the block splits in two and possibly the bottom crank shaft seal.

Do you have to do this while it is running ? I have the same one , I took stuff off the repla e a head and gasket, and ever since, it has been reving out of control. Mine is a 2002 but still is the same as yours , I can't fi d nothing but yours , my engine is strong and beautiful

Does this mower have a oil filter?
@TractorMonkeywithJL4 жыл бұрын
No oil filter on this engine.

Two versions were built, one has splash oiling the other has oil pump and filter.
@gmcinnis63043 жыл бұрын
the ones with splash lubrication suffer from top rod oil starvation ISSUES... cuz ppl cannot/will NOT check the oil before starting!!! and change the oil once in its lift and wonder why it blew up???? with NO OIL IN IT??? I wonder why. ???????
@randallcarney12163 жыл бұрын
Splash or oil pump, either way no oil equals same results,destroyed engine! Not changing oil equals a short engine life the same with air filters,and not keeping cylinder fins clean.

i jus put a 20+ year old twin from an old steel hooded craftsman LT1000 onto a much younger John Deere L100 that blew its motor. The twin has been sitting for over 10 years in a pile next to my garage, i filled the cylinders full of gas + oil and let them soak, replaced the carb with a $35 chinesium amazon carb, and it fired right up and purrs like kitten. I dont think the complex governor assembly enjoyed being exposed to 10 years of Michigan weather, so ill probably be replacing the rusty springs in the fall, but until then i have a nice working JD for under $150 including a new battery & carb, and of course my own labor, maybe 15 hours total over the span of 3 weeks.
