I have a 2007 FZ1 and its got 12k miles on it. I've maxed out the adjustment on the chain and was wondering if you have any insight into whether or not its safe to take a link out. I read most chains can get 20000 miles, but just wondering if you have any advice.

@Jbrew42 the fact that the chain is maxed out on the swingarm marks is because it has been STRETCHED to the max. A good chain that is tightened, cleaned and lubed properly may last 20k miles, but if yours didn't last that long and is maxed, it's at its life's end and I wouldn't cut a link and splice it back together. I would get a new chain. At the same time, I think that if your chain is finished, your sprockets might be as well, and it's technically best to replace the sprockets whenever you install a new chain. I know it's not saving you money, but it may save a snapped chain. I'd rather never snap a chain than save a little money. I'd suggest a D.I.D. or NICHE gold chain and sprocket set. Just FYI. I have a 2012 FZ1 with 13k miles and as shown in this video my chain has plenty of life left. Not sure why yours is maxed at 12k miles. Might want to look into how to take care of a chain and make it last longer on the next round. Hope that helps and thanks for asking.

@Shawn Martin I actually keep great maintenance on the chain, but I bought the bike with 10k miles so the previous owner probably didn't. Sprockets still look good, but like you said it's probably stretched and I suppose I'd rather replace it than have a cracked engine case lol. Thanks for your advice, one last thing. Which website did you use to order new sprockets and chain?

Thanks for this. I was wondering whether it was around an inch total (from top flex to bottom) or whether a full inch up top and a full inch on the bottom.
