Thanks for the video, Lars! This was a great video for setting this up. I’m in the process of transitioning both of our houses to the Cloud Gateway Max from TP-Link due to both the looming ban and the easy setup of the site-to-site VPN. By the way, we never met at the MVP summit, but I was an eight year Microsoft MVP.

Thanks Mick and you are most welcome. I am pretty sure you'll have a good experience with the CGM upgrading from TP-Link. I am about to set up a second network too, which I will do a bunch of testing and videos on. I am working on coming to the summit in March, so hopefully we can catch up there 😊

Thanks very much for a wonderful video , I wanted to ask I have fiber to the home , so it comes in and the there is a device the fiber cable connects to in the garage and then that device connects to the Telstra modem/ router . Would I just swap out the Telstra modem / router with the max gate way to get it to work ?
@LarsKlintTech2 күн бұрын
You are most welcome. You can try swapping the Telstra modem/router first. It depends if there is any verification going on in that box from Telstra. Is it Telstra branded? It depends also sometimes on the verification type from your ISP, which you may have to manually configure in the CGM under the Internet settings. First stop, just try and replace the Telstra box.

Hi Lars, great beginner video! It was already said, but I’m also one of the guys that I rather prefer to skip the flex switch and use Poe injector so I have the full capacity on the AP. Speeeeeeeedddd
@LarsKlintTech2 ай бұрын
Thanks Carlos 😁 There are many many ways to set this up. For Alicia it makes no difference with a 50/15 internet connection and a single AP for a few devices.
@EsotericArctos2 ай бұрын
The Flex Switch is pretty good really. It does get that full gigabit speed, which will give you upto 900mbps real through put anyway ( I use AP 6 Pro's which are 1gbps NIC's ). 2.5 gbps is great, but on WiFi you won't actually get much of an improvement unless you are right on top of the AP. Once you move outside of that small area of 100% signal, the speed drops off and there is little benefit of 2.5gbps. I am basing that on my real world testing of various AP's at a few different sites. It's not the same as the huge benefit from 100mbps to 1gbps. Going to 2.5gbps on WiFi just doesn't have the same benefit. Advantage of having the flex switch is it can connect to other devices in the future, such as a camera. As a note, with Ubiquiti POE adaptors, you have to get the right one. A lot of them are gigabit only and won't do 2.5gbps via the POE adaptor.

Hi Lars, Thank you for another great video. Like the setup. However would not have installed the extra switch. Would have used a POE injector. To power the switch you stilll need a poe injector. If she would think about adding a second camera, lets go for a switch, but when thinking about adding only one POE device, injector would be the way i would go. I would also have put a camera in the back yard... But this is up to her ofcourse. Trust me i have the same setup in a few places with only one POE device. But i have a plan to add more devices in the locations where i have this setup. See you next time

I would buy the new Flex mini 2.5 G so Alicia can utilise faster speeds. By any chance. how does the Protect perform? is it faster than cloud +?
@LarsKlintTechАй бұрын
Sure, there is always an upgrade. In this case I had a spare Switch Flex, so that worked. If you refer to the Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus, I can't comment as I haven't used it. It is working really well though so far on the CGM, but still only a single camera on it as well.

I'm also considering switching to a UniFi system and planning a similar setup. However, I recently found out that the U7 Pro has a 2.5GbE uplink port. Wouldn't it be better to use the Flex Mini 2.5G instead of the standard model, so the switch doesn’t become a bottleneck for the installation?
@LarsKlintTech2 ай бұрын
Yes, you could do, but it doesn't have PoE, so I would have had PoE adaptors galore. I also didn't have a Flex Mini 2.5G on hand.
@keyvin.k2 ай бұрын
@@LarsKlintTech Ah, I see. The best option would be to use a 2.5 GbE switch with PoE ports. This way, you could take full advantage of the U7 Pro’s capabilities and wouldn’t have to worry about having multiple PoE adapters. Right?

2.5gbps on the gateway will be more important Sept 2025 when NBN release multi gigabit plans at wholesale and the NTD's get updated to 2.5gps NIC's. 2.5gbps on the gateway is not a big help right now as the NBN NTD port is only 1gbps. Good to do a bit of future proofing though. I like that Ubiquiti have released a selection of gateways now. It took a while to replace the old USG and USG Pro, but now there are choices for all levels of networking. I think I liked Ubiquiti's old packaging for unifi gear where the screws and tools were stored in a foam block rather than loose bags, and the boxes were a bit more premium looking with that full colour retail box, but the new packaging likely costs less :)
@LarsKlintTech2 ай бұрын
If I had had a 2.5G switch I might have considered adding that instead, but would have meant more PoE adaptors. The UCG Max is a fantastic option for a starter setup too. I have a second one I will use for a video coming up soon too.
@EsotericArctos2 ай бұрын
@@LarsKlintTech Ubiquiti have the 16port Pro MAX in both POE and standard, I'd likely fork out for that if I wanted 2.5gbps with PoE. I believe it is fanless in the 16 port version, but maybe not something you want in your living room still as it is still a rack mount design. I am not a big fan of PoE adaptors in general. I'd rather fork out for a PoE switch, as most times you need a switch anyway :)

You should have advised them to wait on anything WiFi 7 from Ubiquiti considering they are having tons of issues with the 2.4GHz radios. Even though Ubiquiti is currently working on replacements, still no word on a recall program if there will even be one. So glad I used my brain for about a millisecond and didn't buy into that overpriced and under spec'd (to date) line of AP's. Just an added bonus of not having to deal with this latest mess of theirs.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! So far, WiFi 7 devices have been working well for me, including the 2.4GHz band, which handles all my IoT devices on the farm without any issues. When I show new devices, it’s often to explore what's available and see how things perform in real-world setups. Testing the latest tech (even when it’s not perfect) helps us all learn more about what’s out there. Appreciate your insight and taking the time to comment!

@URackADisciprine2 ай бұрын
@@LarsKlintTech Recall, warranty...doesn't really make any difference at the moment. TONS of the U7 AP's are bricks right now for people. You may not have any problems now but that does not mean a 2.4GHz device you want to add later is guaranteed to connect like it should. Ubiquiti did have this issue to a minor extent with the U6 line as well and still refuses acknowledge it. Bond hubs for example always struggle to connect. And cannot even connect to all AP's. I have 5x U6 Pro AP's and it would only connect to the furthest one away. Which also happens to be the newest one I have. Trying to lock it to the closest AP turned the hub into a brick indefinitely. When trying to connect sometimes it would take a day or more even though it was recognized in the UI. You should warn them of these potential issues especially with the U7 line.
