Yo I was thinking the same. Most had a bass high hat and snare set up already. I can basically do that but my bass drum isn’t balanced and it wobbles. I need to understand. I have played drums at a beginner (to prolly mildly intermediate even) but yesterday I bought my first kit, technically for my 9yo son, but yeah. I never watched him taking apart the dang thing. So I had to wind it on setting it up. And it seems like I have no clue what to do. Toms I screw in keep moving? My high hat is at a really wonky angle, my bass drum has legs that don’t stay in place even after screwing them in. Idk. I paused at 30 seconds cuz I saw your comment and I hope this is what I needed. Seems like it tho. I still love that the seat is called a throne lmfao. I looked so dumb in the drum section of the guitar store I go to.

Great video, very informative to any drummer from novice to highly experienced. I've been playing for 17 years and still find myself rearranging and tweaking. I showed this to my cousin who just started playing and it's helped her approach setting up more logically for her needs.

This is actually really good set up instructions for the beginner (big surprise for a youtube instruction video). This is a step that so many beginner drummers don't even realize as important. I had many young drummers come into my home studio with their kit set up in some kind of really crazy way that made their playing really difficult, and I would then suggest changes before recording, and they would invariably comment on how much easier their playing was, and my goal was simply to get good drum tracks, but was pleased that they benefited as a player.

Thx to this video i've been moving my drum for weeks trying to find what's most comfortable. For now one thing i'm really sure off and that's that I like my right cymbal a bit more angled, so the cup comes a bit closer and feels a lot more comfortable for me. But as I said I'm still moving around to find what's best :p

This is EXACTLY what I needed, thanks a lot!!! Especially the beginning, I might set my throne too low so my thies are parallel to the floor and as a result, I always struggle with my snare and hitting my legs all the time. Also those pesky toms mounted to the bass drum don't help. I don't know if rim shots are essential, I have my snare tilted to me so I couldn't play those. Will have to get rid of the tilt, it's probably because of the lower throne. Can't wait to try resetting my kit so it feels better. Cheers! :)

I really, really appreciated you showing us how to properly set up a drum set. Just got our first drum set (5 piece Yamaha + China cymbal) and I had no clue how to go about doing it. Being close to your height it helped immensely seeing where you placed the pieces. My setup is now comfortable. Well, for me anyways. My kids are young and it will mean rearranging all the angles, etc but at least now I have a starting point. This was truly an invaluable piece of information and you did a fantastic job explaining things as you went along. Peace.

My best guess for the extra hats is for a differing tone in the overall set. You could, for example, have a pair of hats for more of a higher tone that you would do 16th not work with, and another for more of a metal feel, heavy and kind of loose, but it's just a guess. Hope it helps!

Nice Kit! and the set -up is Great. Personally for many years now, I've been setting up my Ride where the second rack tom would go and using two floor toms. Anyone else like that style? I just found it easier to reach. Also, I set up the Cowbell off my first Crash stand, I had to because of playing Blurred Lines to get the pattern.

Great video. I too would NEVER attach things to the rim of the bass. Or to the bass at all. Lots of stands can be a trip hazard but you have helped me figure out the best approach for my very vintage and huge (1947) Broadkaster set that has ancient clamp hardware on the tomtoms that I want to keep as vintage as possible. You helped me solve a nagging problem.

I always put my 10" on the top left side of my snare and the 12" on the right. Like an upside down triangle. ... perhaps I should try your set up. My style does create a gap between the 12" and the floor tom where my ride sits.

Great instructional video. Essentially a good position behind your kit is about ergonomics, and bio mechanics. If you want to be able to have a large vocabulary and play lots of different styles fills lick and drumbeats, then you must give thought to your position behind your drums. If you start off in the wrong place like I did, somewhere along the line you find a particular drumbeat really difficult to play - not just because it's hard - but because your making it physically difficult because you're sitting too high, or too low, or you have to reach too far etc., In those situations if you play a 2 hour gig, when the gig is over you're physically totally wrecked with knee-ache, back ache, tendinitis and it's mostly completely unnecessarily because you have a poor position, and poor posture behind your drums. My own online drum academy coming soon.

I prefer to have the toms left of the bass drum so they are directly in front of the snare, and place the bass drum onto a 45 degree angle to the right of where you would normally put it so that when you sit on your throne and have your snare right in front of you, you can directly face the audience if you are playing at concerts and gigs rather than having the bass drum straight at the front and then your body doing a weird angle to the left and not facing the audience. Also, for setting up the drums I prefer starting with the snare, then adding everything else. Great video.
