Setting Up Floral Netting and Planting Sunflowers from Seed, Succession Planting, Cut Flower Farming

Another busy morning in the cut flower garden! In this video I plant my 3rd round of sunflowers for the summer and set up my horizontal trellis netting for my cut flower beds. This will help make sure my stems are nice and straight for harvesting!

I am growing sun flowers for the first time this year. I love the idea of using sunflowers as a trellis. I just learned about this method a few weeks ago and I am trying it in my own garden. I’m a KZbin gardener too. I think I may have already messed up. My pole beans and morning glories that I planned to grow up the sunflower and growing so much faster then my sunflowers! Do you have any advice on what I should do now? I may make a trellis out of branches but I’d love to see this work out as is. Thank you for all your help. You have taught me something new. I hope we can continue to support and learn more from each other.

I use the same netting and we use zip ties to hold it…it hold SUPER tight!! Beautiful garden 😊💐

I invested In hortanova netting.its a plastic-y netting. It was pretty difficult to do by myself but I noticed I also had taller stakes so it was hard to get taught at other end once I slid it down the other 2 stakes. I wonder if that netting you have would be easier... ?

I think the nylon netting probably has a bit more stretch than the Hortonova - which I have been using the past two years. I find that I have to get the distance between posts (width-ways across the bed, as well as length-ways down the bed) spot on, otherwise the netting slides down and is too droopy to provide sufficient support. Bamboo stakes also gave inwards as larger plants (Sunflowers, Amaranthus, Orach, Daucus and Ammi, Cress...) grew and dragged at the netting. In some cases the bamboo snapped! I had to upgrade to T-posts for those beds. I didn't think to use velcro or zip ties to fasten the edges and corners to their posts, though - that gives you a bit more room for error with post placement. It's definitely easier with two sets of hands! We also have very strong winds year-round, and the Hortonova snapped in many places under the strain of large plants. I've read that there are compostable nettings available, so I'll give those a go next season, and see if they hold up any better to strain.
