I always start my Zinnias indoors and transplant them with no issues. My mind is always blown when people say that they don't have a good experience transplanting. I do succession plant them and Sunflowers, which I also start indoors 🤣 If I direct sow, I lose my seeds to birds and squirrels 😞

I agree 100%. Thick seeding most flowers in small containers, pricking out to cells and later transplanting has been reliable and so much more successful for early flowering than direct sowing. Direct sowing causes fails in my main gardens for too many reasons from weather to birds,rodents, weed pressure, etc. Sunflowers and even corn Transplant really well when watered well for a few days after transplanting.

You know what is funny, I have seen gardeners grow cosmos easily. I never really liked them, but I grew them last year. They grew about 5 feet tall and never bloomed. I think like 3 bloomed out of over 100 cosmos. They were green and healthy and huge but no blooms. I was kind of upset cuz I never really liked them in the first place, and then for them not to perform, I was like ok, never again. LOL

Sounds like they could have had too much nitrogen? I've heard thats what happens when you have too much nitrogen for flowers or fruiting plants.. they grow green and beautiful with lots of foliage but not much of what you really want from them 😂😅

This is great information for me, because I’m fairly new to growing flowers for cutting. I am in U.K. My American daughter in law gave me some hyacinth beans which I’ve started in pots (as I would other beans), but they haven’t liked it. This explains it. Luckily I have some more to direct sow 😂

Great information, very helpful. I’ve been starting my zinnias indoors for several years now and was considering direct sowing this year ( similar growing zone to you). Love the idea of using nasturtiums as a trap crop under dahlias. The earwigs do make an appearance there later in the summer. I don’t use pesticides so will try that for sure.

Nasturtiums are a fall through spring plant in SE Texas. Once it gets too hot, they just tank. And then they get mealybug and scale on their way out which then spreads to other plants.

Love the nasturtium shout out a wonderful easy and beautiful plant to grow….I use them as a bunny guard. Because yes I have tried to grow zinnias etc from direct sow they all get devoured by the crazed bunnies in my hood. One actually built a nest and birthed babies in a pot that was 2feet off the ground. Only discovered it when prepping my pots for spring, wasn’t thinking I was growing baby bunnies I rid myself of them but I know they will be back to destroy my garden….😢

I start them in my greenhouse and transplant outdoor later, but one of the best cutlfowers I ever grown is celosia Chief mix. I grew some as a cutflower crop one year, and sold the entire plot! They hold on the plants for 6=8 weeks, and can be cut anytime in that time frame. They are just wonderful. They are heavy drinkers, though!!! Tell people to refill that vase water, celosia will suck a vase dry in 48 hours

Hey there :) ! I'm only a min into the video, but based on the list in the vid. description, I'm guessing you're referring to sunflowers. Just thought I let u know, if "variety" ( singular) wasn't a typo or understatement, that there's more than one ! Since Johnny's seeds is geared for the market growers ( veg and/or flower), they may have the widest selection, but other places may carry some of the same, or different ones ( Johnny's tends to somewhat limit their selection to varieties most productive, reliable and etc. for the intensive, market gardener's needs - a lot of hybrids). With many pollen- less flowers being more along the lines of new or hybrid, or course then Johnny's often will have the most and best. Not an expert, just thought I'd share !

I agree it is not pleasant to harvest. I have some oil i want to try making salve with that has been sitting with the Calendula petals. But I have never heard of using it in a tea?

You don't direct sow larkspur?? Here in Central missouri, it's one of the easiest. Granted, it's a one shot deal, you can't really do sucession planting, but the vase life is so incredibly long.

We mention it in the description-our springs are so dry here I don’t rely on direct sowing much in the fall. It is too unreliable of germination here. These are all good direct sow and reliable summer producers. :)

I start seeds inside because it’s faster for me to keep them watered. Is there a trick to keeping directly sown seeds moist or do you need to water twice daily when it doesn’t rain?

I'm guessing that would be awfully dependant on how sunny, how hot, how close to the equator you are/sun's position over your region, wine, soil type and amount of humus in it, and if you have mulch on paths & if so, is it right up close to the row.. ? But one trick is to lightly scatter grass clippings ( or fine hay or straw) over the row after planting and watering in, as well. Esp for large, strong seeds and seedlings like sunflowers, a very thin layer usually doesn't block them from coming up. Also, be sure you're planting deep enough. The rule of thumb is to plant a seed twice as deep as the seed is in diameter. But of course some seeds have their own particular directions for themselves, so, check. I often have realized that I'm covering them a bit more shallowly than I could/should have, and realize that I'm only making more work for myself, having them being at risk of drying out quicker. Another trick could be to do the cornstarch thing that's a trick for carrot seeds, to both help spread them out/reduce thinning needed, and to help them avoid drying out, as carrots seeds are tiny & SUPER wimpy. Search here on YT for "sowing carrots in cornstarch jelly" or something. I've yet to do it myself, plan to this year. Otherwise, the older tip for carrots could work too. Lay a plank/board over the row and when it's close to the expected germination time, start checking and when u start seeing sprouts, take the board away and resume keeping it moist per usual. Water in before putting the board there of course.

Yup, I don’t grow amaranth anymore because it reseeds like crazy and it’s usually too large for me to use in bouquets. I know some love it though!
