You’re welcome Lucas. Yes, unfortunately at my flying field, if there is ever a signal problem, I can guarantee it’s someone using Spektrum. My 30cc planes will be getting redundancy like this too. I’ve not ever had an issue with RF on FrSky. But better to be safe than sorry.

Why I'm switching to it as well. I've got a few 20cc gassers going together and some giant scales and I don't trust a Radiomaster for that. These X20s are basically a cheaper Jeti at this point and that's freaking awesome.

I have followed your setup exactly using a X20S, SR8 PRO as main receiver and a R9SX as redundant receiver using SBUS with CH 6 set to SBUS and connected to the SBUS in on the SR8.. All works as you described until I switch model ID back to disable the SR8 which now has a red light and R9 has green light but get no servos working from the redundant R9 receiver. Can you think if something I have missed, Can’t seem to get the redundant receiver to take over no mater what I do. Appreciate your help as not many resources for such a new system, Thanks, Greg.

Supplementary question please? I changed the Rx number of the 2.4 Rx to test failover but the servos stop working. I'm getting good RSSI on both Rxs. Am I doing it right? (ps., following your excellent review of the X20S, got a nice red one yesterday :-) Highly impressed so far. Just following your Ethos Suite & update vids - going to be back here quite a bit I can see. Great content - very clear) Update - doh.. hope you haven't read this yet. Silly me didn't change Ch6 on R9SX to Sbus. Hence the no failover. All well now, Just change the Rx number on the SR8 and servos keep working from the R9SX. (That said, huge amount of RF interference from R9 antenna to servo (long lead next to them). Having to try to find another spot for them further away from that lead. ('course I'd just finished hot glueing the antenna in the bottom of a highly inaccessible innards..)

Great video!! - I have a couple of issues I wondered if you might have a solution for 1. how to get 16 channels from two X8R receivers and 2. how to set up the throttles on a 2 glow engine plane with throttle cut on either or both engines and failsafe on both engines and independent trims to set up the idle on both engines
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. For the 16 channels, instead of using 2 receivers. I would take the SBUS out of the X8R and attach it to a SBUS to PWM adapter. Bind the X8R with channels 1-8 as normal, and use channels 9-16 on the SBUS to PWM converter. Which transmitter do you have and what firmware are you using? The two engines shouldn't be too tricky to work out. The trim may be the biggest problem. Failsafe would probably be the easy part. As you could just use a custom failsafe and set the output to the channels with the engines to an idle throttle, or off, whichever is your preference.

can you explain the advantage of this compaired to the new Dual frequency receivers like the TD series. Is this just for signal loss on one reciever?
@MrD
@MrD Жыл бұрын
The advantage is that not everyone uses the new TANDEM system. I would guess that there are still more people using FrSky transmitters that don’t support TANDEM, than do. So they can set this up and have redundancy. TD does provide both frequencies on the same receiver. It actually uses both frequencies simultaneously when in range. It’s not just a switching frequency redundancy. So it could be argued that if you’re using a single 2.4 GHz and single 900MHz non-TANDEM receiver. That you could just replace them with a single TD receiver. But, there’s also nothing stopping people using TANDEM from also setting up redundancy. For example using a TD MX as a redundant receiver for a TD R10. This would give an extra axis of coverage for both 2.4GHz and 900MHz.
@kitchenstrand
@kitchenstrand 2 жыл бұрын
Darren, some say you can NOT use a stabilizer RX in redundancy. What do you say'? Have you seen?
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand it. You can use a stabilised receiver as the master receiver, ie the one the servos are connected to. They can’t be used for any of the redundant receivers. I did check with FrSky, and they confirmed this. But I will also do my own testing in the near future.

Can I assume that I can connect an SR10(Stab.)receiver with a GR6(Vario)receiver ? Thanks
@MrD
@MrD Жыл бұрын
Yes, the GR6 has both SBUS in and out, so can be used as master or slave. With your setup the SR10 Pro would need to be master, as it is stabilised. The only caveat is that you would lose the vairo telemetry if the radio link is lost from the GR6.

You’re better off using the SBUS out of the SR10 Pro to connect an SBUS to PWM adapter. If you are using the R6 or R8 as a redundancy receiver, you can’t use their PWM outputs. Only use the outputs of the master receiver.

Does this work with a plain 2.4GHz ACCESS radio (non-tandem) with an R9 module in the back? Additionally, would this work with a second module/RX of a different protocol, as long as the RX used SBUS and the channel mapping was the same? eg ELRS, Crossfire etc.

Hi Jim. Yes, it will work on regular ACCST as well as ACCESS. To be honest, I’ve never tried that. I guess if the Crossfire receiver was outputting SBUS, it could work.

Now with the Tandem dual band receivers coming out is there any real benefit to having this dual satellite setup? Maybe to get some separation of the antennas?
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
The redundancy is less important with the Tandem receivers. But, they will still give you more RF reception as you can still cover all angles. The separation would also help. Plus if an antenna gets knocked off or shakes loose, you have more protection.

Sorry Zack, I don’t quite understand the question. The R10 Pro is fine for use with gas planes. All the Pro and tandem receivers are ok to use with electronic ignition engines. You may not be able to use the R10 Pro with the X12S. It depends on the type of RF module installed. If it has an XJT module, the R10 Pro, and any other ACCESS, won’t work. If it has an ISRM module, it will work.

Is there a reason you couldn't just turn of the 2.4ghz transmitter and keep the 900mhz on the check redundancy? Also why can't you have telemetry on both? Seems to work just fine when I have it on. But haven't flown that way since you said one shouldn't.

Dr. D ! Can you bind a SR6 to a TD R 18 to get stabilization for a gaser?? Or what two RX would you bind for lots of Channels, redundancy and stabilization? Or would you use the SR8 pro?
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, unfortunately not. You can't mix protocols. The TD R18 being TANDEM, and the SR6 being ACCESS. At this point in time, for stabilisation and redundancy, you would need to pair an SR8 Pro or SR10 Pro with and R8 Pro or R9 MX. Or with the tandem route, you would need to use one of the stabilised redundancy busses. RB30 or above I believe. It really depends on the size of the gasser, and how many channels you need. I'll be putting the SR10 Pro and R9MX in my 30cc planes. Well, if a stabilised TANDEM receiver comes out before I buy the receivers for the 2nd plane, I may use one of those instead.

Hi Darren, great video on back up receiver. Can we use the back up receiver to drive few servos
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
No, all servos should be plugged in to the main receiver. The data only goes from the redundant receiver to the main receiver, not the other way round. I need to check, but it could be that the SBUS out from the main receiver will be from the strongest signal. So you could potentially use that and an SBUS to PWM converter to operate more servos. But I’ll check with FrSky to be certain.

@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
No, you should not use any pins on the slave receiver. They will not get any channel information if it loses signal. The SBUS connection is one directional, so the data only ever goes from the slave to the master. The better option would be to use an SBUS out from the SR10 Pro (master) with an SBUS to PWM converter. But, you’d only really gain channels 13-16.

Thanks Chris. I did try that to test, but the receivers never reliably lost the bind. It wasn’t until I bound to a different ID that I was guaranteed only one receiver being bound at a time. I believe the master has to always bind with the transmitter before you can remove it. In all honesty, I don’t know why they say to only use telemetry on the master receiver. Perhaps conflicting telemetry IDs or something like that? That is just the recommended way to set it up. So I followed the guidance.

Currently on the X20 Pro. Both external antennas are for 2.4GHz. One for FSK, the other for TW. Internally, the hardware supports an external antenna for 900MHz. I’m hoping that in the future there will be an option in the firmware to say which antenna is for which module. I have actually made the internal hardware change already. I personally don’t see any point for an external FSK antenna. The internal ones work well enough for LOS already.

The SR10+ has a RED LED and the R9SX has a GREEN LED but no servo movement no matter what port I put the servo in on the SR10+. The crazy thing is the stabilization still works when I move the SR10+ ? So far not a great experience trying to get this redundancy to work. UPDATE, JUST TRIED THIS SETUP USING A SR10 PRO AND IT WORKS NO PROBLEM, ISSUE IS WITH THE ARCHER SR10+?
@MrD
@MrD Жыл бұрын
I've just tested this, and it works fine. I have set up an SR10+ as the main receiver with the R9 SX as the redundancy receiver. To wire it up, I first register and bind (RX1) the SR10+. Then go in to the receiver options and set Pin1 to SBUS IN (You will need to move all the control pins down 1, as I show in the SR10+ video). Next unplug the SR10+. Then register and bind (RX2) the R9 SX. Go in to it's receiver options and set Pin6 to SBUS. Power down the receivers, then connect from the CH6 pins of the R9 SX to the 1 pins on the SR10+. Power on both receivers, and it all works. I can turn off either the 2.4GHz or 900MHz side of the RF module, and the servo keeps moving. It only stops if I turn off both sides of the RF module, which is obviously going to happen. But, TL;DR. It works fine. It must have been a setup issue you are having with the SR10+.

Changing the receiver channel was just a way of temporarily unbinding the receiver from that model. It’s actually much easier to just disable the 2.4GHz or 900MHz temporarily to test its working. So don’t worry about that. The key thing is setting the pin outs correctly on the receivers for this to work. The SR10+ must have SBUS IN on Pin1. It unfortunately won’t work on any other pin currently.

Hi Michel. Yes, on the TD R6, assign one of the PWM ports to be SBUS OUT. Then connect that via a cable to a port assigned to SBUS IN on the TD R18. Good Morning. The instructions for the R9-SX do not instruct on antenna orientation. What is the recommended orientation for this type of antenna ? The redundancy setup works beautifully. Another question. My is the telemetry turned off for the second receiver ? I experimented with this. Having the R9SX telemetry enabled allows the user to actually see and hear which receiver has lost and regained it's respective signal. Isn't this a beneficial ? Thanks
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Frank. With ACCESS, you can bind both with telemetry. I'll be making a video to square all this up after chatting with FrSky. With regards to the antenna orientation, it would depend on the type of flying you're doing. Most types will be the same as when setting up 2.4 diversity antennae. So one vertical, the other horizontal. But, if you're flying long range, an elongated X (taller than wider, so more vertical), viewed from the side of the plane, gives better performance.

Yes, currently the RB25S is the smallest option. I don’t know if there’ll be an RB15S in the future. With redundancy in general. Only the master device should have stabiliser functionality enabled. @@MrD I have learned more unfortunately. When using both an X10S Express OpenTX or an X20S Ethos radio. Attempting to use redundancy on a new gas airplane. Without fail, while all connected and working perfectly, if I unplug R8, re-plug R8, then unplug R9M; The RB10 LED goes red and I lose all control. Then I re-plug R9M and get back control. I tried this with both radios, exact same problem. THEN I switched the R8 Pro with a Archer R6. Problem SOLVED ! I believe there is a FW issue with the R8 Pro. I tried every FW back to V2.1.9, no change. If I eliminate the RB10, the problem goes away. If I try an SR8 Pro, with the “S” turned off, same problem + some of the channels reverse when the R9M is unplugged !!!! Definitely not an option. You only need to power the master receiver, so the SR10 Pro in this case. Just run a cable from the SBUS out of the R9 SX to the SBUS in of the SR10 Pro, with signal, power, and ground. So long as the BEC is enough for all your servos plus some overhead. It should be fine. The XT30 connectors are good for power redundancy. It will use the power source with the highest voltage. Just be sure that however you power the SR10 Pro, that the voltage doesn’t exceed what the servos can handle.

@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve. You could potentially use a different power source for the redundant receiver. But if the main receiver loses power, you will still lose control as the servos are powered from the master receiver. The master receiver also needs to take the SBUS signal from the redundant receiver and output that to the servos. For such a large and expensive model, have you thought about using the redundancy bus system? Something like the RB30 has 3 receiver connections, dual power redundancy, as well as features like servo overload protection. You may find something like that better. As for the R9 SX. It would work fine. I used it in my demo purely because it had servo plugs for the SBUS connection, which made the demo easier. If this is an ignition engine setup, it may be better to use the R8 Pro as the redundant receiver. Though lots of petrol guys are using R9 for the redundant receiver too, with no issues. You could use any receiver with an SBUS out, so long as it fits your build.

@@MrD Thank you for taking the time to reply. Yes, I was looking at the RB20 redundancy bus system. Most guys feel this is the safest way to go. But some point out; "then you're back to a single point of failure". And I have seen one or two bus systems go south. Somehow the idea of having two completely separate systems (switch, battery and RX) for each half of the plane appeals to me. When the X8R were having the electrical noise problem, I was able to get down on one RX when the other RX completely quit. There may be a flaw in my thinking, but this seems like a better idea. Having a 2.4 RX backed up by a 900Mhz Rx on at least one side makes a little more sense to me. Steve

If the X8R was on a plane with an ignition engine, that would explain the problem. The X8R wasn’t designed for use with ignition engines. Yes, I can see where you’re coming from with regards to the single point of failure. In which case, I’d suggest looking at either the R10 Pro or SR10 Pro as the master receiver. That will give you power redundancy; and is also CDI safe. Then use the R9 MX, or whatever you choose as the redundant receiver, powered buy the R10 Pro. Then you have power and signal redundancy on that side. On the other side, go for your preferred receiver, of course this needs to be a Pro receiver if an ignition engine is used. Also, it’s worth noting that FrSky have Tandem receivers coming out soon. These have the 2.4Ghz and 900MHz receivers in one unit. All Tandem receivers will be ignition engine safe too.
