You are my hero. I've set up SXR rxs before and didn't have a problem. The R9 STAB however would not operate the servos until a self check was done while moving the sticks. Your short comment about moving the sticks while the blue light blinks made all the difference although I needed to move the sticks while the light was solid. FWI, this was using the LUA scripts on the X20HD. Thanks and please continue making these great videos.

Mr.D. At 14:00 you state "if the RX goes right the rudder should go right"! I do believe you are incorrect! If the A/C nose is moving right and I add additional rudder, that control input will NOT correct the nose position. The gyro should be inserting an 'opposite' control input, just like your aileron explanation. I have over 5k flying hours in the big heavy bombers (B-52G/H). I was in the aircrew that flew a "G" model at the Mildenhall AFB airshow in 1986. Best Regards.

Great video. I watched it to better understand whether I should try out FrSky & ETHOS and buy an X20s or not, especially with regards to gyro receivers. This video made it quite clear to me that configuring a stabilized plane using ETHOS UI & ACCESS receivers shouldn't pose any issue for an experienced RC guy used to one of the big old brands of RC equipment. Thumps up!

Thanks John. They can be a little tricky in the beginning. But once you get used to how everything works, it's all pretty familiar. Yes, the switch delay caused me problems too. Tried everything, twice. I the end I reached out to my contact at FrSky, who is excellent. He told me to try that, and that solved it. But, that information couldn't be found anywhere, so I included it in the video. I'm sure that has caught out quite a few people.

@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
On the bench, if you put the plane in self level mode, you should be able to see and hear a difference when you have the gain at minimum and maximum. When you move the plane, subtle movements should have less servo movement. If you don’t see any difference, check the output channel for the gain mix. Just in case that hasn’t been setup or is on the wrong channel. Feel free to record a video of the test and post a link here.

Question - I have an X20S, and SR8 Pro and I follow the video of calibrating the receiver, and I set my mixer for the modes of CHN 10, Switch SE (3 positions) instead of SA as in the video. I just cannot set the modes to None. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Good morning, I have a question, minute 7:37, in this section it tells you first position and you go down and click on the rudder, why rudder and not first position? I try to configure the same receiver and the same transmitter and I have a doubt in that section.
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
I clicked on rudder as it was the last thing in the list. This puts the new mixer at the bottom of the list. Now in ETHOS there is an option to add the item Last, shown at the top of the list to make life easier. I like to keep my mixes in order. So the first 4 mixes are Aileron, Elevator, Throttle, and Rudder; to match the channel order.

When you choose this (first, last, or the existing mixes). This is just the visual order on the mixer page. It has no effect on the output channel at all. That is set within the mix itself. This ordering is just to create a mixer screen that you will find easy to use. With the gain in particular. You just create the one gain. That is for all stabilised channels.

What no one is saying or showing are ways of tweaking (I'm working on this) Auto Level response. If you're used to AS3 type stabilizers, in Auto Level any right stick movement off center causes the stabilization to "back off" and it's "your airplane". I find the FrSky stabilization system does not want to relinquish control, regardless of gain settings and fights you for the airplane. I belive under "SRX Stable" that can be tweaked, but i am yet to find proper info on that. On scale models with AS3 I sometimes like to use auto level on takeoff and/or landings to ease the workload especially on the Jets. Mind you, I am coming over to FrSky from JR/Spektrum and Hobby Eagle A3 Super 3 stabilization. Nonetheless, I love my FrSky X20S and the SR series receivers, im just not using Auto Level feature, but have it on an "Oh S**it" button. I do have a an X20pro AW on order as my Christmas present. Season's Greetings all!

Great explanation, thanks for sharing. Do the SRx receivers need the same calibration procedure as the SxR receivers, which need to be calibrated, then flown with stabilization completely off while setting the trims, expo and stuff, and then need to be calibrated again? I calibrated my SRx and went flying with stabilization on and everything seemed and seems to work, but the stabilization seems a bit weak, I expected a more locked-in feel, wind is still moving it around a bit. Is this normal? I guess my prop is causing vibrations though, and I know gyros don't like vibrations.

Help! I’m having problems setting up the new archer plus SR8 receiver. After following your steps for set up, the gyro operates even when the SXR page is not activated. The page will not allow me to choose wing type, position, turn gyro on / off. When I switch on gyro it allows me to move the slider over and it turns yellow , but as soon as I release it it automatically goes to the off position. All of the other options do the same including wing type and position. I have the gain on ch13, mode on 14, and oh crap on Ch16. The mode switch on ch13 works even though the able disable switch is in the off position on the SXR page. The instruction manual I down loaded from FrSky says to use ch 13,14,16 instead of ch9,10,12 as for my S8R receivers.
@MrD

Make sure you have the latest version of the firmware for both the radio (OS and RF) and the receiver. There’s probably just a mismatch somewhere. It looks like the new Archer Plus SR8 is indeed using channels 13-16 for stabilisation. This will make things easier on the receivers.

I was able to figure it out. For those who are interested, there are a couple of ways to do this, but I used a Var mix as it seemed to be the simplest. I set up the main weight to 0% then added a new weight to the percentage I wanted it to increase with my gear down. I used my gear-down switch as the source. The output would be the gain channel. This percentage increase is set over the existing position set by the gain knob.

Nice video. You assigned your "Oh Crap" switch to a momentary switch. That's fine. But you still have a 3 position switch that is still active on channel 12. What I mean is. If you toggle that switch 3 times you'll enter the "Self test" . That would be bad if you were flying and did that. What I did was disable the 3 position switch, and remove the channel 12 assignment. This will prevent crap from happening. Than assign the 2 position momentary switch to channel 12.

That’s a pretty good idea. Though I don’t think that there would be much chance of accidentally entering self test while flying. You’d have to be gliding, then flick the switch fast 3 times.

I got it onto the SD card and I could view it in the files on the X20S but I hadn't got the additional windows for the stabilisation on the radio showing. I did find another video on KZbin by Frsky and tried again after deleting the files. I found this worked because the first time I added them to a folder location in scripts labelled receiver. The second time I just put them into the scripts folder and now the additional windows are there on the transmitter. Not got any further with setup yet but fingers crossed I'm making progress. 👍

Have an odd problem with my SR6. Its was working fine. Then i pulled it out and put in in a different plane. When i tried to bind it, it doesnt seem to be getting power. I tried direct from battery through ESC. no power. Tried a small 3S battery connected to an external BEC. no power. What happes with both setups, a green LED flashes momentarily when the battery is connected. But no light stays on even when the battery is connected. i tried adding a servo to check if power was coming through. No power at all. Not sure what to make of it. I tried the same with a brand new SR10Pro and that is working fine. The SR6 seems to be dead. Have you ever encountered this problem? Is there a fix?
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
I've not encountered that problem. But, possibly something has been damaged, as it seems to light up briefly when power is first applied. If it is working normally, you should have a blinking green LED. Without any servos attached; try powering the receiver from the white connector block at the top. You should have got a cable with a servo plug on the other end with the receiver. If that works, it could be that the PWM pins have been damaged. In which case it would probably be worth contacting the retailer, as that shouldn't happen in standard use. Or take the case apart and check the joints between the PWM pins and the circuit board. Also, if the white connector block works, you could try flashing the receiver again via the cable, in case there was a power surge or something that corrupted the firmware. Unlikely, but worth a try.

Basically, there are two switches: AUX1 Enable and AUX2 Enable. If AUX1 Enable is off, output 5 is used as the second aileron output. If it is on, it uses whatever is on channel 5 from your transmitter. AUX2 works the same, only it outputs a second elevator when AUX2 Enable is off, and deals with channel 6.

Awesome Ant. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the new radio. The RF side is great on the FrSky systems. There are a range of SmartPort sensors that you can get. They can all daisy chain together too, so setup is easy. There is a vario which will give you altitude, and an airspeed sensor too. There are a couple of options for the lack voltage. There are basic analogue sensors and SmartPort sensors that plug in to the balance lead. I’ve only used the analogue sensors before (they can be made DIY with resistors). But I don’t find them useful on powered models. On gliders they’re great. But I found under load, the pack voltage was giving low readings too early due to the sag. On a glider with the motor off, they’re great. Maybe the SmartPort sensors are better? I can’t really say as I’ve not used one. But they will give pack and cell voltages.

@Anthony Jayakody ditching Spektrum was the best thing you could do-They are trying to create their own ecosystem where you have to you use everything made by them, The protocol they use Is notoriously problematic I don’t care what anyone says and it seems to be worse with genuine receivers as opposed to lemon or HK ones. Regardless you won’t regret shifting to the Darkside-the X20 is barely developed yet compared to the OpenTX based Radios but I can tell you from the perspective of somebody who has come from OpenTX that it is almost like they took the best parts of OpenTX when they made Ethos and combined them all together. I have been able to adjust from my OTX Horus X10S to a Tandem X20S relatively easily-I watched a couple of Darren’s videos here just to see how to to go about programming these archer stabilised receivers and also to update the radio firmware. @Mr.D - Falling with style not a bad job at all! It's always the last one on the list with problems. Thanks for the feedback. I feel like sometime I ramble on too much. But it's good to hear the balance is about right though. Having said that, the last video is almost an hour and a half long! Lee is an awesome guy though. We had a "10 minute" chat, that lasted about 2 hours. Just talking about flying and iNav mostly. He's an absolute gent. As for the knife edge and hover modes. I am pretty hesitant to make a video on them. Mostly because I don't use them, so I can't say if or how well they work. Knife edges I think are easy enough to learn without that assistance. But the hovering may be handy as a trainer function. But maybe not too. I think I'll have to get an S6R on a profile foamy and try them out before considering a video on it.

Maybe this is because I am using a later version of Ethos? I don't know if this is the right way to do this or not, but it is working for me. I could not get self-test to activate using the mix as described. If this is the correct solution it is better because you don't have to use a switch on the radio (except for the Oh Crap Mom of course).

Hi Randall. I've not actually looked in to this. I have seen there are RB 30/40 configuration tools on the transmitter. They're in the model menu in Device Config. I only have an RB 20, which looks like it doesn't have any configuration as such. I can't see anywhere in the manual how to update the firmware. With the RB 20 you need to connect the S.Port of the RB 20 to the S.Port in the top of the transmitter. Then flash an external device with the firmware. Maybe this is the same for the RB 20? Sorry I couldn't be more help at this time.

@@MrD Yes you're correct I figured it out I watch the video with a different RC car radio and the methods are the same it's just the X20 doesn't use that plug like you said it gets plugged into the back of the transmitter for flashing and I suppose the configuration would be the same as the other radio system so thank you very much I really appreciate your help

@@randalldavis2116 the X20 doesn’t have the same pins on the back. It sounds like the radio in the other video probably had a full size JR bay. The S.Port connector on the top of the X20 will be able to flash the firmware. The same port is used to flash non-OTA receivers.
