I got permission from a old gentleman one time who was kind and let me turkey hunt his land . I've never been on this property before, I get there before light and get into the woods setup against a big oak . Sun started coming up and a Tom was roosted right above me.. before he flew down he pooped on me... 15 minutes later I was carrying him out.

That Tom breaking away from his hens and scouting out the one he heard earlier takes patience many hunters simply don't possess.
Great info Matt! Im happy to see how your channel has grown. It seems only a year ago you were trying to hit the 10k mark, now ur way past it. Always felt you had one of the best educational hunting channels out there. Keep up the great work pal!

I’m trying to learn how to turkey hunt so I have been binge watching your videos. I finally had one fired up but no deal he must have had hens

Let me tell you! This current season, my set up was always about 100 to 150 yards away from where the gobblers were roosted. After 4,5 sits , it was dry spell. They were not coming to the call and going one way out. I decided to sneak in on them at dark one hour before legal hours. 2 flew down to 30 yards and the hunt was over right there. Second time I did the same and one flew down about 40 yards and I missed the shot . At least I don’t have to eat tag soup this year. Yes sometimes you gotta make some bold moves, but let me tell you , I was supper silent and covered that 100 yards in over 1/2 hour, that’s how slow and cautious I was not to step on anything .

It seems like everyone is a KZbinr these days but less then 10 percent are good hunters. I’m not talking just turkey hunting either. I’m a big elk archery guy, deer, bear and everything in between. I find myself turning videos off a lot because they kind of piss me off. Especially elk videos with bad calling and tactics… sometimes if my kids are watching a program I don’t like I say “I feel myself getting “stupider” with this on”. Anything worth doing, is worth doing well, especially if your going to record it and put it on the net as permanent record. I have patience for guys learning to shoot video and edit but not consistent bad hunting or calling. Obviously, we all make mistakes and can benifit from sharing good and bad moments. Thankfully, there are legit guys out there and good channels this one. Thank you

Foliage can make a big difference in how far away to set up. Early season can be really tough to move on a bird because they can see you move from a long way off even in the woods. Once the foliage comes out and you can get a fix on where they are are headed, and it is NOT to you, heavy leaf cover can allow you to get in a bushwack situation. As season progresses, birds seem to get really call shy in pressured areas, and may be best to put away the decoys, greatly reduce the calling, and go strictly to bushwack mode.

Once upon a time I set up in the dark with two decoys on the edge of a field. I didn't know where the gobbler was exactly. I only knew there was a tom in the area. After a few minutes, still dark, in a tree he started gobbling 25 feet away from me! He gobbled 30 or 40 times before He pitched down to my left in the woods and then walked up into the field. He didn't gobble once he was on the ground. He just walked down to the decoys and really surprised me. I was sitting on a stone wall. I was facing into the woods and away from him. I had to twist my waist around with some difficulty. When I moved on him he hopped several feet into the field and then stopped. I was holding the gun recoil pad against my upper arm not my shoulder. It was awkward but I got him. If I had known where he was that morning I never would have set up so close to him. He never knew I was there. I suspect he heard me setting up but he couldn't see me. The decoys did their job. He put a beating on my jake decoy before I shot him. NERVE RACKING. I never want to have that happen again.

I’ve killed a lot of birds with the fly down cackle when they are gobbling on the roost. If he answers your tree call Wait till it’s light enough. Hit him with the fly down and shut up. Later in the season they usually come in quiet

Hey Matt , awesome video ...I'm already getting the itch to get out in the turkey woods . I purchased a few different calls from spring fever one of which being the double trouble cherry pot call . Unfortunately the glass cracked all the way across on the back side , wondering if they warranty the calls by chance ?

Had really good hunt last year just like this, I sat 150 -200yds away on opposite side of the ag field. Waited for the bird to pitch down and start eating. Hit him with a Couple soft calls and he was dead before sunrise.

Matt, what would you recommend for me? I have a bird roosting on my but right on the timber line, an easy pitch down to the neighbors field, but still only 60-70 yards from my field. How or what can I do to get this bird to fly down to me?

Hey Matt I’m in Indiana our season is mid April when I should I start scouting and locating turkeys to have some options for opening day? Is now a good time or should I wait closer to season not sure if they change patterns like deer do or not.
@zzhh68372 жыл бұрын
As soon as it warms up a little. Early-mid March. Early March they'll probably be flocked up still but that means there'll be more sign in a concentrated area. It's possible they leave the area once breeding hits but there's a better chance (in my opinion) someone in the flock will still frequent those spots.

@@zzhh6837 thanks for the tip. I was kinda thinking the same thing as far as once the weather starts turning. I only hunt public land for turkeys so wanting to figure out when I should scout and have several locations too choose from in case someone beats me to the punch on a particular spot. Glad to know I was thinking in the right direction thanks for commenting and good luck this year!

@@donaldjones5701 thanks you too! I forgot to mention February can be a good time too when there's snow on the ground. I was actually out last week after a big snow looking for tracks in a new area just to see if I could get an idea if there were any in the area.

If a bird is henned up bad, I'll get 30-40yds from him roost at a couple hours b4 daylight. By the time its 2 hrs b4 daylight I'm set up and ready. Put a strutter out where he can see him, about fly down time give home a couple little clucks and a soft yelp or two and be quite and let him fly down. I'll bet money that 9/10 times the bird will fly down straight to you
