Remember that the leading edges of spades and shovels get dull. Pick yourself up a file and sharpen up your tools before use. Another trick is to have a container of sand with a some oil poured in, placed in your storage tool shed and before hanging up a tool, push it down into the sand and oil. It will give it a quick clean and a bit of sharpen from the sand and then the oil will coat the steel to stop it from rusting. The green barrel at the beginning of the video cut at 24” would make a great recycled container.

I'm not sure who/where you would have that done in Scotland, but someone at a garden center or DIY place would probably know.

Jude, your new home is ADORABLE. And your clever filming and editing is sooo appreciated. I am loving your series! At 64 years old I am moving to a Scottish-inspired town in Aotearoa (New Zealand), hoping to learn to garden and grow my own food, and learn to cook (!), and generally be more self-sufficient (water tanks are in the wish list!) so your series is ADDICTIVE. Keep up the good work! 💪🌟🌳

That sounds incredible!! One day I’ll get to visit Aotearoa (when I can afford to fly business class 😂😂) - it looks like an incredible place! You’ll definitely learn how NOT to do things if you stick around here before too long! 😂😂❤

@@rewildingjude hopefully your KZbin channel makes you HEAPS of money so you can travel biz class. It is definitely the only civilised way to get to Aotearoa 😂

Pointed spade’s definitely better - we call them poachers spades round here. We have a clay soil and it helps get through roots too. I’d use a flat spade like you have there more for moving loosened soil.

I’ll have to look up a pointed space, I’ve only seen short handled ones, for planting stuff, when I’ve searched!

The asbestos panels are unlikely to hurt you unless you break or cut them. As long as it stays intact, it's probably ok, especially if you keep it outdoors. You can encapsulate them, too, paint works. They could be quite useful otherwise. You could cut them, as long as it stays wet, quite wet, and then encapsulate the edges. Former asbestos building inspector...
@ameliagfawkes5122 ай бұрын
I found some random bits of corrugated asbestos in the corner of our garden when we moved here (we have an asbestos garage, so it may have come from there). I did the right thing by calling the Council and asking what to do with it. Just double-bag it and shove it in the bin, they said. I shouldn't have bothered reading up on asbestos and all the official recommendations for disposing of it. The only issue I have with asbestos walls is that I can't attach anything to them and I wouldn't collect rain water off of the roof (or a roof with lead flashing, for that matter - is that just me?). We don't scrape the moss off it either. One of the few occasions where we spray a moss-killing/removing chemical. Otherwise, we leave it well alone.

Have you thought of putting a clothes line in the barn ready for the Scottish winter weather. It would save you running in and out when/always rains
@mrsbabycakes55512 ай бұрын
An inside line is essential. My sister lives off grid and she has a barn and has a washing line set up for the winter and find it absolutely brilliant so this is a really good idea if you want to use it for drying clothes to save energy on drying your clothes.

A suggestion Jude, prune back the branches hanging over the shed roof to avoid the leaves blocking the gutter and definitely get rid of the ivy. Its roots will eat through your down pipe. Otherwise great job! 😊

I came here to say something along the same lines. The branches can also damage the roof

You're doing great Jude! KZbin is sometimes full of critical comments so I hope people keep offering suggestions with a warm and helpful spirit. Just remember, making mistakes is part of learning, and that's as it should be. You're trying and that is the entire battle! Really, that's it - just to try is a win! Everything else follows thereafter eventually. Happy I found your channel to take comfort from a fellow mistake maker just bumbling along and doing your best. Cheers & thanks for the vids.

I have no doubt you've gotten many posts already, but I'll tell you how to differentiate on shovels. Pointed or long nosed shovels are for digging in unbroken ground. Flat nosed shovels are for moving soil or other materials by scooping them up (think about a dustpan). Simple!
