Been watching from start of your journey while recovering from some horrible flu bug and have paused half way through this video to comment. When I saw the gutter addition my first thought was YES a water tank but then I realised that living in South Africa water is always our first concern. Most definitely not one I would think in Scotland. What a Determined young fellow you are. The self taught skills gained along the way a tribute to your sheer guts and just throwing yourself in and trying. I am also an only child and can understand that thought that YES it’s only us and we can DO IT. Well done. I cannot wait to catch up to your latest videos. May I add… Your parents are most definitely smiling down from heaven🇿🇦

Remember that the leading edges of spades and shovels get dull. Pick yourself up a file and sharpen up your tools before use. Another trick is to have a container of sand with a some oil poured in, placed in your storage tool shed and before hanging up a tool, push it down into the sand and oil. It will give it a quick clean and a bit of sharpen from the sand and then the oil will coat the steel to stop it from rusting. The green barrel at the beginning of the video cut at 24” would make a great recycled container.

This way you're actually cutting through the dirt, plants, roots, and etc instead of scooping them. I'm not sure who/where you would have that done in Scotland, but someone at a garden center or DIY place would probably know.

The asbestos panels are unlikely to hurt you unless you break or cut them. As long as it stays intact, it's probably ok, especially if you keep it outdoors. You can encapsulate them, too, paint works. They could be quite useful otherwise. You could cut them, as long as it stays wet, quite wet, and then encapsulate the edges. Former asbestos building inspector...
@ameliagfawkes5124 ай бұрын
I found some random bits of corrugated asbestos in the corner of our garden when we moved here (we have an asbestos garage, so it may have come from there). I did the right thing by calling the Council and asking what to do with it. Just double-bag it and shove it in the bin, they said. I shouldn't have bothered reading up on asbestos and all the official recommendations for disposing of it. The only issue I have with asbestos walls is that I can't attach anything to them and I wouldn't collect rain water off of the roof (or a roof with lead flashing, for that matter - is that just me?). We don't scrape the moss off it either. One of the few occasions where we spray a moss-killing/removing chemical. Otherwise, we leave it well alone.

Just a thought.. put a blanket on the roof of the car and then put the barrel on top of it. Run the ropes or straps through the windows around the barrels. I move my canoe this way without a rack on my car. Edited to add.. get yourself a metal pry bar.. it can be used to lever many different things like pavers, stumps etc…

You come across very personable and so warm and friendly, I will be following you from now on and cheering you on all the way. You are brave and inspiring, you have a great following here for the times you may feel tired and a little alone, but you will never be alone. Watching this - after buying a spade from B&Q last night because the exact same happened to me ha ha I planted a tree and so many told me I was using a shovel - not a spade lol So, now I have a pointy spade :) yay - it better be easier ! you did such a great job on the guttering and water butts - it will be incredible to have such a huge water source so close to your vegetable patches :)

I have found that a Hori Hori knife and pull saw are is my most used gardening tools. The Hori Hori is great for digging smaller holes for planting, cutting smaller roots, vines, etc. the pull saw is easier to use than a traditional saw.

Congrats on getting the self-propelled feature on the lawn mower to work, and on getting the water storage sussed out! I noticed the English ivy growing on the shed and its foundations behind your water barrels. I’m not sure how vigorously it grows in your part of Scotland, but here in NC in the States it can get between foundations and the building sills, get behind siding, and allow moisture in to rot out sheathing. It also can destroy mortar on brickwork and chimneys. You might want to get that bit of ivy pulled out before the barrels get rain filled. For your Q&A: How far is it or how long does it take you to get to a grocery store or your DIY store? Or in other words, just how far out in the boonies are you??? And, are you likely to have power outages during winter storms? If yes, what are your plans for managing water, light, cooking, and heat if that happens. (When I was living in the boonies and was on a well, we didn’t have a backup generator, so no power = no well pump = no water.) I’m feeling a bit like a mother hen wanting to know you will be warm and fed and watered as winter nears. harpingJanet

You're doing great Jude! KZbin is sometimes full of critical comments so I hope people keep offering suggestions with a warm and helpful spirit. Just remember, making mistakes is part of learning, and that's as it should be. You're trying and that is the entire battle! Really, that's it - just to try is a win! Everything else follows thereafter eventually. Happy I found your channel to take comfort from a fellow mistake maker just bumbling along and doing your best. Cheers & thanks for the vids.

Thank you!! The majority of the comments have been lovely so far. I’ve been on KZbin for a while so I’m kind of seasoned to the odd troll comment about my appearance 😂😂

Pointed spade’s definitely better - we call them poachers spades round here. We have a clay soil and it helps get through roots too. I’d use a flat spade like you have there more for moving loosened soil.
