Hi Jude, my 32 year old son passed away two years ago, and I have to agree that time weirdly kaleidoscopes when it comes loss. It seems ages since that last hug, and yet pain can be so fresh and raw, it’s like it was just yesterday. No one will ever replace your dear mum, but I hope you know that you’ve created a community of support here. I hope you can feel that I and everyone else has adopted you! You are inspiring me to reengage in my life in ways that I haven’t been able to manage for a while. I really appreciate that you’ve let us into your life, and shared your joy & grief, challenges & wins, as well as the beauty and peace of your corner of the world. I have to say, I’m not surprised you’re officiating a wedding! You’ve got the wisdom and introspection of a philosopher and I’m sure you’re deeply loved and cherished by your friends. Thank you, Jude, for all of this. Yours, Natasha

Jude, cattle farmer here. It's the farmer's responsibility to keep their cattle in. They could run an electric fence along there, and absolutely should do, as a temporary measure. It's quite possible the owner of the cattle is renting the ground - so they are unlikely to want to fix/renew the fence as they'd be doing a very expensive repair job for the land owner who could chuck them off next season. But - it's not your responsibility. Best wishes.
@jhenderson22863 ай бұрын
ps- a 'pinch bar' rather than a spade is your friend for getting fenceposts in.
@catsmother45563 ай бұрын
I had the same thought. It is always the owners responsibility to keep their animals in. 🐄🐃🐂. No farmer wants the worry of their animals escaping.
@mrsbabycakes55513 ай бұрын
Isn’t it the farmers responsibility to fix the fence. It’s worth asking them, because they may not even realise it needs repairing.
@shetlandsheep30813 ай бұрын
In Scotland, the rules can allegedly be somewhat different on the fencing responsibility, at least the cattle farmer next to me tried to convince me of that when his cattle regularly broke into my fields due to his broken down fencing….But eventually said farmer DID have his field fencing re-done. However with a garden fence you should reasonably have a fence in decent condition - but it only needs to be a garden type fence. If the cattle break that and come in the farmer is liable so they should erect post and wire/barb or electric to keep them in. Ie you are responsible for a fence on your boundary but only of a type that reflects your usage of the land, just like the farmer is responsible for ensuring that his use of the land doesnt result in trespass or damage by his stock. You are def not responsible for reaching stock fencing standard of the fence round your garden. Re the boiler - no I could never smell oil but we had put a new boiler in, it was an insulated external boiler with a frost stat that ensures the pipes never freeze. An old, uninsulated single wall tank could well have developed a leak in the tank or pipe so that needs sorting; maybe if lucky the leak is just a corroded joint which is easy to replace.
@catsmother45563 ай бұрын
@@shetlandsheep3081 A quick search on Google. =. Fencing Laws In the UK, there are two types of land when which affect how livestock should be restricted. On private land, it is deemed the responsibility of the owner to secure their livestock through fencing them in and keeping them safe. However, private land that borders on common land needs to be secured to ensure that livestock does not wander onto common land and equally common livestock wandering on private. Scotland is part of the UK

Completely agree. When I tried adopting a cat here (South West) a couple of years ago, I ended up getting the impression shelters didn't actually want cats adopted, there were so many nonsensical requirements and hoops to jump through (I've owned cats for 13 years at that point and even moved countries with them). I eventually got a pumpkin-spicy ginger from Spain, who's enjoying regular meals and cuddle session more instead of going through the rubbish on the streets. At least that's what I tell myself 😂

One way to keep the mice out of the house is to go all around the inside and outside and fill any openings with steel wool. Under the sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms are two of the most notorious places. The little critters can't chew through steel wool. You can also make a spray solution of cayenne or cinnamon boiled in water and spray it all around the perimeter.
@ginavandam7353 ай бұрын
I would say..make sure it is not steelwool but the one you can wash the dishes with, with broader "steelbands"...otherwise they will be chewing through. I tried all sorts of heavy smelling things, but they ignore it. Mousetraps everywhere!!!

Was just going to say this, we moved an old house in Australia and had a terrible mouse problem until we went round every nook and cranny. Covered holes with timber or stuffed them with steel wool. Take a look at the very base of your house where the grass could be hiding any holes in the mortar. I used to have the same problem and the hole they were getting in was no bigger than my little finger tip. Also if you have airgrates, make sure you cover them with fine steel mesh. I also used quick setting cement because I went in for a quick cuppa and there were teeth marks where they had tried to bite their way in.

I got the feeling the water closer should be inside your house, it would freeze outside. This is some outside tap thing you closed. Mine is in my cellar, most have them in a hole under the front door mat. Mice are intelligent, they can find their old home in a radius of two kilometers or more. Bring them far, far away. Wasps come inside for winter, to hibernate until spring. Find the hole, June, and close it off so they can't get in anymore. Cats and dogs go together, and my dog would lead a burglar to the safe, the cats catch everything. Alive. And bring in it to let it escape. From moths, birds, and toads to mice. They love seeing me running around to catch it, pure cat amusement. Are snow chains allowed in Scotland? I have not a clue, I used them in snow and ice. Loss is such a heavy load, you get used to it, but it is always there.
@estherrenwick70063 ай бұрын
Main stopcocks are often outside in the UK - ours is in a similar place to Jude's behind the house. Then there is usually another one to cut off the boiler etc inside too - except our old house only has one inside to isolate the outside tap if it freezes.

Hi, I've been 8 years with an outside oil boiler and there is constantly an oil smell around it. It runs on kerosene which has strong fumes but that's simply a by product to its presence. Only worry if you smell the fumes inside. That said, a service is a sensible choice 👌
@rewildingjude3 ай бұрын
That’s very good to hear! Hopefully that’s all it is - one of my neighbours has recommended a company to call to get it serviced, so that’s on my list for this week!

If you want to save money Jude; I soak my fence and decking and any other post that is going to touch the ground in old engine oil. It has to be old from an oil change... garages just give it away. Soak over night and it completely penetrates the wood or paint it on cross beams or ends of beams that are going into a wall to stop rot.

Like watching your videos. I bought a cottage built in 1880 about 10 years ago. It took about 2 years until the worst work was done. Had roof and gutters repaired first. Did all internal decorations myself and over time learned so much doing it. Oil smell should not be present. Get it looked at. In 2020 I replaced my oil heating with an air source heat pump and it works great. I lived for 2 years without central heating after my oil boiler broke down and plan for the installation. You definitely need loft insulation for that but I used sheep wool in the loft and that is perfect. There are grants and interest free loans from the Scottish Government for alternative heat sources. Get your doors draft proof for the winter. I had thresholds fitted on the floor because I didn’t want to replace my old cottage doors and draft stoppers around the door opening, much better than curtains. Other thing I did over the past couple of years was replacing my windows, one at a time and that made a big difference. Mice come in to my loft over the winter and it’s field mice who disappear for the rest of the year. Have 2 cats and they deal with any that might come in otherwise.

Hey Jude, your boiler looks relatively new, so a service and check of the oil line & tank should do it. As someone already said, there will always be a little whiff of oil around the setup. But unless there is discoloration on the pipes or joins or stains on the ground/obvious leaks, it should be alright. At least that’s what we were told the last time we had a guy out to check. When they do the inspection, they should visually inspect the oil tank too. In our case, the bottom of the boiler fell out the first time we turned it on. Afterwards we were told boilers are made with about 10 years lifespan, ours was about 30. And now we have to change the oil tank. Trust me, you and your cottage are doing just fine. You were made for each other and the cottage ‘knows it’. Sending hugs from Ireland. 🤗
