I, like yourself am an introvert, so I rarely even post a comment, but I would just like to say how much I love your home. It is a very beautiful block and cottage and find it a privilege to be able to watch you go about your life there. Just remember we all have things that go wrong and take longer to do or cost more than we expect, but believe that it’s all part of the fun and it will probably always occur. Hoping you never get too down or discouraged. Look forward to watching for many years to come.

I'm sure that you've been taken aback by the amazing subscriptions and views on your channel and started to realise that making the videos with the extremely high production values that you use and answering all of the comments could amount to a huge chunk of your week. I don't think that you'll be looking for a new enterprise or even a paid job after your gap year. I think you've found your new niche in life. In time the cottage will be all spick and span, the compost will be making itself and the veg garden will be thriving but I'm sure that most of us would happily watch you do anything you chose to do with your time regardless of what it is.
@eliengroot8115Ай бұрын
Dear Jude, here's a tip from a dedicated composter (living not that far from where you are): leave the composting process be. This is Scotland, and it just isn't warm here. You will have noticed this. Therefore you are making cold compost, whether you want to or not. This will happen magically, all by itself. Only thing is, it takes time. My compost is on a 3 year rotation, I have 3 bins, in a smallish garden. No1 bin is this year's compost, number 2 is last years compost and no 3 bin is the compost I am going to put on the soil in about December/January time. and then I turn no2 into bin 3 etc, you get the picture. No 1 bin is the biggest, and no 3 is the smallest. I do rummage a bit in number 1 bin ,if I can't put any more material in, just with a fork, and then it settles and that is all I do to it. If you are so lucky as to be able to gather too much material for one bin, just make another one right next to it. Or 2! You need them close together so you can turn the stuff from the one to the other. And of course you want them right near where you're going to grow your veg, so you don't have to make unnecessary trips with wheelbarrows. Good luck!
@eliengroot8115Ай бұрын
PS Your beds should run north to south.

Yes, I'm in Scotland too. I just keep filling quite a number of larger than normal composters and, when I finally do excavate them, it's black and beautiful stuff. You can speed up the process with wee .... I know to most that sounds disgusting, but I don't know why when folks are happy to put all sorts of manure into their garden. Not recommended to do that with human poop unless a foray into humanure has been researched in advance.
@annhopkin5079Ай бұрын
Right. but, nothing decomposes without water. Nothing.
@eliengroot8115Ай бұрын
@@annhopkin5079 True. However, this is Scotland. It rains, frequently and reliably, it's rare to be putting dry material in the compost bin.

Jude, did you ever anticipate that there would be someone on the other side of the world hunkered down in her car during a work break for the sole purpose of watching your channel while eating take away lunch? 🙋♀️😄 thank you for sharing your adventures with us! P.s. welding a flame thrower to torch wood is a level of bravery I hope to achieve in this lifetime! P.p.s could you level your garden beds by increasing the height of the raised bed structure as the lawn slopes downward? and then when you fill it with soil, you could just level it out? That might require some clever math so I can’t help you there, but I see it in my head.

Oh! I think I know why that board caught on your circular saw and tore - the weight of the board is causing it to fall into the middle where you're cutting it, thus gripping the blade. Try to have the fulcrum of each of your cut pieces a little closer to the inside where you're cutting -looks like it was resting on the very far end of the board. The setup looked way better when you were using the hand saw. It's better to have the board fall away from you (even if it flips into the air) than it is to have it fall in towards the saw. You're doing great! Good luck!

You also are able to say that it didn’t happen today, but I will try again tomorrow. These are all important skills. In fact they are more important than the DIY skills. Those can be learned. Keep going. I really enjoy and appreciate my Sunday afternoon time catching up with you each week.

Hello Jude. You don't need a replacement reel for your Dad's old trimmer, just the nylon, which comes in rolls (it can be any name brand). The reel comes out, then you wind the nylon thread around it and reinsert the reel. You just need to make sure it's thin enough to pass through the reel hole. I enjoy your videos so much. I am a bit envious of your Beautiful property. Nothing like that in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!! ;) Cheers

You think you don’t have skills? I live in a condo in the city and would be lost if I couldn’t get Starbucks delivery. I dodge when the HOA is looking for volunteers to clear snow. My proudest moment recently was when my toilet started to make trickling noises and I figured out how to fix it by replacing the flapper. Must be why I find your videos so relaxing because I can live vicariously through them. My favourite this week was getting a good look at the cows ❤

Keep a bucket to pee in and add it to the compost heap. It adds essential nitrogen and speeds up the composting process. It repels varmints too. Just do it!
@Ragt0pАй бұрын
Absolutely! As long as you do not take any medication. I didn’t think about that, so stopped using pee this year after learning about it. Now, I make «tea» from nettles and weeds and add instead.

I can neither confirm nor deny whether I’ve been peeing on my compost 😂 a bucket would probably be sensible though 😂
@Ragt0pАй бұрын
@@rewildingjude making tea is also a great way to kill weeds in a way where they can do good in your garden. I have a black 100 liter plastic barrel. This summer I filled it halfway with water and piled things I didn’t want on my compost heap in there. The sun baked it, and the warm water drowned/cooked the seeds. I’ve used the water as fertilizer, and kept the plant bits. So far I haven’t seen anything grow from the sludge, but I’m keeping the sludge away from the compost until I’m sure the method. Next year I’m pretty sure the sludge is going on the compost. No organic matter lost 🤩

Just asked my wife for a second opinion of my self-diagnosis and it's confirmed: I have shed envy! 😂 She did shoot me a look when I could be heard muttering "nice rack"! 🙃 With regard to strimmers, from experience, if you go down the battery route, I'd get one that takes 2 of your power tool batteries. The extra voltage will give it the necessary oomph.

I know 3 guys who had very limited exposure to asbestos who died of mesothelioma - asbestos cancer so take care. Worth extra cost to get it sorted as professionally because you can’t replace you life. Get battery tools. I have 2 makita. That way your batteries can always be the same and a double charger is a help. At 76 I bought a power head which takes alsorts of extras. Edgers pole saws strimmers. My late partner used makita in his building life and so I have inherited a lot of tools, just getting back to using them. The thing about battery tools you can take them anywhere as long as your battery is charged. No struggling with cords finding plugs etc 😊

Pegs and String are always a handy tool to use when measuring out your beds. 2 to 3 foot pegs if you can, to help give you the levelling space you may need due to your ground slant. Depending how how deep you will want to go. Then you level against your string. Similar to what you would do if laying concrete.
