I installed 7 of these about a year ago and my experience has been largely positive. The battery life seems to be about 3 months when opening and closing onece per day. Your tip about where to put the joiner if you have to shorten the cable is a good one, I didn't fall into this trap but I did locate a couple of the drive units too low which makes it difficult to remove them as the unit need to slip downwards to come off the bracket and I placed it too close to the window ledge. I have expeienced problems with chain stretch and wear of the plastic cog wheel after some time. My biggest issue is that some of my roller blind mechanisms are quite stiff and the Aqara E1 seems to struggle to drive them and there is some jumping of the chain in the cog as the blind open level sometime becomes too low. One other issue I found, which may be a factor for those in colder climates, is that even with secondary glazing when it is really cold outside the unit sometimes struggle to open the blind. Overall however I am reasonably happy with the units. One further tip, I found that the best way to charge the battery is with a portable power bank, given that windows are not always close to a socket outlet.

I have looked at these before and have been struggling to pull the trigger. I do have 2 questions. 1. Can you still use the chain to raise and lower the blinds and if you do does this update in home assistant. 2. You said that there were a few things that can only be done with the Aqara hub. What were these features that we can’t do? Thanks.

If you want to open the blind manually or adjust the opening height you need to slip it off the cog but this is not difficult to do. It is not reflected in Home Assistant when you do this so you must restore it to what HomeAssist thinks the blind position is when you put the chain back on the cog. Overall there should be no need for you to do this unless for example the battery is depleted and needs recharging or the open or closed position has got messed up because of chain slipage on the cog. I have found that you get a bit of chain stretch with both metal and plastic chain with time. You can easily adjust the blind position with the up and down button on the device to where ever you want in the range of open to close that you have set and this position is relected in HomeAssistant. Or you can use the up and down arrow controls in HomeAssistant.

Other than the battery being flat, I can't think of a reason you'd need to manually move the blinds...... the buttons on the unit will move it if you cant be bothered opening Home Assistant. As for the aqara features, I don't have anything paired to an aqara hub anymore so it's pure speculation at this point, but at a guess it's mostly going to be around the automations that can easily be replaced with Home Assistant Automations anyway. i.e. open/close schedules, open/close based on light level or temperature, etc. Only other thing I can think of is maybe some more access to some of the settings of the device through the APP UI instead of having to press a combination of buttons.

@@HiveMindAutomation The reason for it is because people who do not know will just yank on the chain, the blinds move too slow, make it go faster by using the chain, then the limits will be stuffed up. I really like the idea but that my monsters, I mean by dearly beloveds will just yank on the chain.

Do you know can you oair this roller with ikea dirgeria hub?

I don't think the Dirigera hub is "open" enough to allow pairing with non-Ikea devices. Could be wrong though.

Do you need to fix it to the wall, or can it just hang freely from the chain?

you need to fix it to the wall but I found the adhesive pads strong enough.

it has to be fixed to the wall or it'll climb the chain.
