Older instruments (I like vintage gear) have their level vials affixed by screws to the telescope. I have found that using these two screws as a sight line, I can use that to find my target well enough to see it in the scope. So even if you don't have a sight, you can still improvise a means of doing so. of course, they also have four leveling screws so were a bit harder to true up...

Thank You Sir for this! Very well explained....I've been wrestling with how to measure up my yard with distances as well as elevations - enter the Stadia Lines and formula, which I didn't know about. I tested it out on a 45' distance this evening and was within 1/4" - simply amazing!

The field artillery has been using aiming circles for decades. The leveling of this piece of equipment is the same. Good instructions. The primary difference is direction. I thought that this piece would enable the location of magnetic north but apparently it does not. I'll have to do more research on theodolites. Never used civilian equipment before but I am well versed in aiming circles and GLPS systems which enable location.

Sir, I am doing a building and construction course and in the course we are taught how to use the dumpy level; that made me interested in acquiring one to use it on site, to setout the building, and for landscaping, drawing contour lines on a site plan, etc, would you please advise me as to what would be the best, entry level, cheap but accurate, dumpy level? I have been looking at the Topcon, and the Leica as well as the Bosch, except for the Bosch, the others seem a bit expensive for a student. Which one would you recommend, please? The next question, is wether the Dumpy level has now become obsolete due to the laser levels. Again, would you be kind enough to tell me whether laser levels are dangerous on the construction site, because of the possibility to accidently train the beam on someone's eyes? I was told by our teacher, that the most accurate level, is the dumpy automatic level, that lasers are not as accurate and outside are difficult to read, and therefore requires extra investment in a laser detector. Can you please advise, Sir? Regards, Franklin

Thanks. This will come in handy when setting rough grades.. too blind for exacts, so will leave that to the professionals

.It is notable that in various instructional materials on level setup, the 360-degree circle is frequently overlooked without any explicit mention of its significance. The absence of acknowledgment regarding this crucial element may create a misconception that it holds no relevance. However, it is imperative to recognize that the 360-degree circle plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the instrument. Understanding its purpose is fundamental for achieving accurate and precise measurements, and it is advisable to incorporate comprehensive explanations of this component in instructional content to ensure a thorough understanding among users.
