I bought the roll paper unit with the printer, more than a year ago, but haven't needed it until today. I couldn't find the user manual for installing it, and tried to figure it out on my own for about 10 minutes. Well, that was a waste of time. At least I didn't break anything. Did an online search, and here I am. Great tutorial. I subscribed. Thank you Keith!

It feeds straight in. The only issues I had were with a bent edge, which took a bit of smoothing to get to load. I would prefer the spindle system - I have a P5000 here and it is superb, with a powered roll unit that is very robust. Very different market and expected use levels though. I've done a few prints now, and my real concern would be keeping those rollers very clean (one time I would be concerned over dust and paper lint.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 жыл бұрын
@Bosingr I still have some slight concerns about heavy rolls of paper resting on rollers - not a more robust paper like the Premium Luster but a cotton rag or something like Epson's TPP. I think with some care in loading/unloading it will be OK, but users will need to take care

Glad it helped! There is an article and review about the printer as well on the Northlight site, which may have useful detail. Yes, leaving the roll adapter is fine, although if not using for a while I'd take it off to keep in a bag to minimise dust getting on to the rollers. @@KeithCooper I decided to go with the p900 because of size convenience and I wont be printing all the time. Im a professional hyper realist painted and use my printer for photo reference to paint from but I am now thinking of making really nice prints to sell at a huge art show coming up and also off my website. Although I liked the 5000, I just do not have the room for something that big in my studio. Are you saying that the paper roll doesn’t work well or just thicker paper? I ordered Hahnemule Fiber matte. Will that work? I can just go with precut sheets as I always have if mot. The largest print I will do is 16 x 20 . Do 17x22 is good.

The roll unit works well, but for expensive roll papers I'm not happy with the way the print surface rests on the rollers - It means you cannot leave paper sitting in the printer overnight for example. Sheet feeding is excellent though, as is print quality with good profiles.

Thanks - It's not mentioned in the specs, so I don't know for sure. One thing I'd note... Pay careful attention to my notes about the paper (print) surface resting on the powered rollers. Anyone know if you can feed paper sheets into the back of the machine thur the roll feed slot, or does it have to go in thru the top (normal) feed tray.

Use any 17" paper you like (with the right profile ;-) I've no idea why Epson do the 16" - I use 17" a lot I use papers form Paper Spectrum, Innova, PermaJet and Fotospeed (all UK - no idea eleswhere) See some of the paper reviews listed here www.northlight-images.co.uk/photography-articles-and-reviews/printing-paper-reviews-articles/ Note that my articles go back to 2003 - the videos only back to Aug 2020 Here's the bigger version of the P900 I use - mostly with 17" roll paper www.northlight-images.co.uk/review-epson-p5000-printer/ Here's one paper I've used for quite some time myself www.northlight-images.co.uk/paper-review-pinnacle-warmtone-baryta-310/ As to using Epson papers - I always suggest starting off using a new printer with some OEM paper (A4 will do). Not because it is better, but because the printer was designed for it. BTW If you look at my list of paper reviews, you will notice distinct similarities between some Epson fine art papers and others I've looked at. www.northlight-images.co.uk/keith-coopers-paper-reviews/ Remember that Epson don't actually make their own paper ;-)

Just one note - the P900 roll unit rests the paper print surface on drive rollers. I'm a little bit wary of this spindle-less approach and it means you really should not leave paper in the roll unit when not using it. It's one reason I would _personally_ recommend the bigger P5000 for serious roll use. But that needs more regular use...

Thanks IMHO, the roll unit is the weakest aspect of the P900. Wonderful engineering/design, but rolling media prints side down on rollers is not what I'd personally want - yes, cut sheets should work fine. Hi Keith, I have 2 questions, Is it necessary to remove paper and/or feeder in order to go back to using the top feeder? Also, do you know whether there is a maximum length that can be printed using the top feeder without a roll feeder. I’ve been trying to print some 17x60 inch panos using paper I cut from a roll. On several occasions it stopped and ejected print around 43 inches. Initially I thought it might have been slightly skewed as the cause. I was able to get a perfect feed with printing perfectly parallel to the edges and it still stopped and ejected around 43 inches. I’m printing from Lightroom with Lightroom controlling color management. Set up paper size as custom 17x60 and left 1/2 inch borders. Any thoughts? Thanks Chuck

I think the two feeds work still, but I can't remember for sure (it was only here for a while) As to the maximum page length - try printing from EPL and setting a custom page size there - see what it will allow. LR ranks very low on my choices for printing, beyond snaps on small paper - it just butts in and tries to be to clever, helping where it isn't help, but as ever YMMV ;-)

Keith, great video! You show so much more than the printed instructions Epson provides. I have looked at the Epson video of attaching the Roll Paper Adapter and they don't show removing the back cover of the printer, as you do. I made my first print and I got some marking from the rollers through most of the 34" print! So, I am thinking, maybe you are correct in removing the cover as it may affect the feed. I wish I could attach a photo of the markings but I think you get the idea. So, why did you come up with the idea of removing the cover? Is it because, in your initial testing, you were getting these scratches in the print surface, also?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - it actually came about because the first (new) 900 I was sent had the rear flap loose in the box. Then after I'd experimented a bit, the printer broke (shipping damage) but the second had the flap attached. In using it I found it easier to keep the rear flap off. A couple of times front feed papers might have touched it on their way through. The second printer was however a pre-release engineering test unit, so I'm not sure what is necessarily the optimum. However care is needed advancing paper, and after I'd made this video (do see the main written article on the Northlight Images web site) I took more care in using the powered paper advance rather than push it through.

@@KeithCooper Keith, just got off the phone with Epson tech support about my issue with the roller in the RPA marking my print. I have been informed that Epson Exhibition Fiber (Thickness: 13 mil) will not work in the Roll Paper Adapter and I should be feeding into the front, which means that if I am using this paper, the RPA is worthless. You were printing with Epson Ultra Premium Luster (Thickness: 10 mil) which apparently works fine. this, and they should have it in the instruction manual and in any promotion on every website that sells the unit! I still don't trust the tech's findings as all he did was look at the printer specs to come to that conclusion. There is nothing in the RPA specs about this, so I am still confused. @@KeithCooper Since my last post, I have done some ruminating. The tech I spoke to was obviously set up to follow scripts and did not actually have any experience with the equipment. I will also be sending an email to Epson, directing it to the engineering department to see if they had tested the RPA with heavy paper. It just seems unlikely that it won't take Exhibition fiber! They would have stated that on B&H's website. They would not have invested so much on R&D to create such a piece of machinery that costs $250 that is incapable of heavier paper. Something isn't right! My problem is I just want to print, not be part of the Epson R&D department, unless they want to pay me really well.

@@EdDunn21 I've asked about it, but don't know when I'll get a response (most of my contacts are locked out of the office here in the UK). However, I agree since I'd have expected the roll unit to work with any paper I might try. Personally I've never been a huge fan of TPP (as it's called in other regions) and found it to be a relatively fragile paper surface, when first testing with an SP4880 when it first came out. That's not to say I didn't get some very good A2 prints when trying it with the P900, just that I've paper choices I'd prefer for my personal use.

Wow so much better than my p800. Poop 💩 lol. That roll things looks easier to use . I have yet to attach my roll attach,ent to my p800 washroom it cuts too. Oh man. My p800 is so lightly used . Wish I could switch it up for this model . Darn

Actually, I'm minded to say 'don't beat yourself up' over it! In terms of print quality you are losing very little. The main change is that loss of black swap. The P800 roll unit has a spindle, which I prefer, even if it is not powered. (neither have a cutter) - personally I like the P5000, but it's a lot bigger printer. The screen does make the printer easier to use, but not massively so - I would be perfectly happy making prints with a P800. Have a look at the latest Epson print software as well? I have a lengthy review of the P800 as well as the P900 www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-surecolor-p800-printer-review/

Can this printer take canvas roles?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 11 ай бұрын
It should handle a light canvas. Given the general performance of the roll unit, it's not an option I'd choose other than for light, occasional use. For 17" canvas I'd want a proper 'built for roll' printer like the P5000 and above

Hi Keith, I commented before but this is a different topic so thought that I would start a new thread. You may have touched on this elsewhere but I haven't watched all of your videos yet. I have only used my printer twice. This week I printed a couple of copies of one photo in a 16"x20" size, using the roll paper. It has a faux matte (4" border printed around the pic.) It wasn't noticable at first glance but as I was framing them I noticed roller marks on the faux matte area. It is on the photo as well but is not as visible. They may not have showed up as well if I was just printing the photo but the matte part is a solid colour so that is where it is most visible. In one place it removed part of the colour. In other areas you can just see two duller tracks running through the photo. On the back of one there was a black mark across the back. What is causing this to happen and what do I do to rememdy this? Thanks, Sandy

Are these roller marks that match up with the drive rollers in the roll unit or rollers inside the printer? The roll unit with the paper surface resting on the drive rollers needs a lot of care in use, and I only tried a few paper types. The paper shouldn't be left in the printer longer than necessary, resting on the rollers. Whilst I don't have any test evidence, I suspect that some papers won't like the roller drive system

@@KeithCooper Thanks for getting back to me so quicky. I checked it out and it looks like two roller marks line up with the rollers in the roll unit. There is actually a third mark that does not line up with the roll unit so it must be from the rollers within the printer. That is the one that has ink missing. I took the advice of the place were I got all of my printing done up until now, and she had switched from an Epson Matte Paper to LexJet Matte Paper (both are archival) I have a 100 foot roll of it so I hope that something can be done. Will it make a difference to cut it into sheets? It was a brand new roll that I opened and printed right away. I didn't leave it on the printer.

@@KeithCooper My first use of the printer was with Epson Premium Luster and I didn't notice any roller marks on it but it certainly is an issue with the LexJet Matte. (not blaming LexJet)

[Repost of question] Where do you find the choices to do such things as border widths etc, Keith? I'm having a dreadful time with my new P900, I haven't printed a thing yet and been messing around with it for a week. The mobile app and front panel seem very thin on options. The feed choices doesn't include the roll feed, the media choices doesn't include canvas and the size of print is only fixed sizes. On the mobile (android) app, this. And all the time, every time I try to print a standard A2 on roll canvas, I get the same message telling me that the choices on the app don't match the choices on the printer. Well I'm only choosing what is there in the options. Is there a better app that loads onto a Windows laptop or something?

I should add, I only ever print on canvas and only use rolls.
@WashingtonSAFC

I should also add, the printer acknowledges that there is a roll fed into it, and that it's canvas. But the phone app isn't offering the roll feed as a feed choice, or canvas as a media choice.

Sorry, but printing from a phone is simply never going to give consistent and good results on a relatively high end printer like this. Needs a proper computer ;-) Get a [free] copy of Epson Print Layout and read this (ideally not on a phone! - I don't write articles for mobile layout ;-) ] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-sc-p900-printer-review/

@@KeithCooper I loaded a driver onto an old Windows 10 laptop I had, yesterday. Although it looks like it has a few more features than the phone app, the only choice of paper size available to me is A4 😂😂 And I can't find a way to change it. But I will have a look at your article. Thanks for your prompt response to my 'cry for help'.

I work with people throughout the world - in Europe it would be centimetres, in the US inches. Here in the UK I'll happily use both, hence my answer. If miles or kilometres, the answer would still be no... ;-) The answer is in the fact that it is sold as a 17" width printer...

Ah, have a read the main _written_ P900 review for what papers I tested. I can't easily suggest anything specific for that sort of print. The real key in printing such images is in editing and processing the files - the precise paper is relatively unimportant With the roll unit, a standard lustre paper is likely the best choice.
