Setting up VS Code for Unity Development - New 2024!

This video saved me a bunch of time. Big thanks! Tip for Mac users: Some macs use the F11 to show desktop and it's normal to use that as Code's "Step Into" when debugging. One can remap it on mac's system/keyboard/keyboard shortcuts/Mission Control. Also, in Unity, make sure you have both the latest Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code packages, else debugging won't be setup correctly, as of August 2024 using Unity 2022.3.7f1.

Very helpful and clear. As of 24 May 2024, some changes: Had to add IntelliCode as a step on its own. Package Manager doesn't seem to install VS Code support, but it is present regardless.

@@IMMORTAL0012 Both are good tbh. I have a issue with vscode's indent (C#) which is really annoying, but everything else is good. VScode is lighter compared to VS. VS is a bit more straight forward, but if you follow this tutorial you are pretty much set. I would personally go with VS Code. First check C# basics. Try to understand what Variables & methods are and how they can be used. Difference between Private and Public. in Unity you should check out how components works and the general UI interface. Watch tutorials to learn, but don't copy their code. "Hands on", keep coding :) Remember that it's totally fine to hit a wall and struggle. Don't give up, and remember to take breaks.

I am having problems with running the debugger. It doesn't have an option to "attach to unity'. Just a blue button and if I choose unity in a dropdown menu I get "a message about installing "vstruc" or open json. Not sure why it's different for me. Also not sure what you clicked to create the editor config file.

oh my god!!! lifesaver!!!! spent so long trying to get brackets on same line but there were no solutions afaik prettier is universal formatter with limited but enough options, though doesnt support csharp some other formatter works but is """"opionionated"""" (gives you zero options and says that's a feature, because youre TOO STUPID to be allowed to change any settings) some other one did let you change your settings, but you needed to setup some server or some bs just for some bloody formatting thank god mate thank you thank you my eyes will bleed no more when i write cs

Did you solve it? Make sure Visual Studio (not just code) is installed in the Package Manager. Should be v2.0.2 or greater.

go to to this path C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code, when you go to user you wont find AppData you need to type it or paste AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code ,then chose code.exe

May I ask if the position of the cursor can be adjusted to be within the method by default? When I click on a blank area in a method {}, it always moves the cursor to the beginning of the line, while Visual Studio moves it to within the method

Helped a lot too. Do you know how to easily debug the game directly. I use Attach Unity Debugger and it works fine but it's quite not direct to press F1, choose attach Unity Debugger and select the Player (not the editor). I'd like to have a F5 key pressed start, configured in the launch and I did n't find how to do it properly

At 3.12 he installs "Visual Studio Code Editor" please don't do that... it is no longer supported.
