Good overview of the available bass drum settings. Another important parameter that was not mentioned is the angle of the beater when it contacts the head, which is influenced by the depth of the rim and the angle of the bass drum front-to-back. This can be adjusted by raising or lowering the bass drum spurs.

Thanks for sharing this thought. Great addition and definitely a very important aspect!

moving from a cheaper pedal to one with more adjustment options it's not easy to see how they combine and influence each other, this vid encourages trying out more different settings to find what works best for different situations -- also helps that I've just got one like that -)

This started out pretty basic and I was judging a bit hard until about halfway through. This is actually a pretty good beginner to intermediate guide. The biggest thing you're lacking here is how the tuning and tightness of the bass drum head can influence your playing.

I have a cheap Tama kick pedal. I really enjoy it actually. Last night I realized I could adjust the tension and responsiveness. Wow. What a change that was 😆 I felt like a dingus.

I'm old but new to drumming. I have yamaha stage custom's but I just can't a solid, low thump to the 22" kick drum. It just sounds loose when I play it, as if the batter head is way too loose. When I hit the kick pedal, the drums all sound like the fittings are all loose on the rack tom's...as if the is a vibration noise after each hit. I bought a new batter head, EVANS EC2's I think with double ply and a foam ring but the drum still sounds like the batter head is a garbage bag pulled tight instead of a head. The resonat heads are still the old factory one, and these drums are old. The toms have felt pads inside the drum to adjust the damping. I'm going to buy a felt beater today to see if that helps, and I'm going to disconnect everything from the drum to stop any vibration sounds and yesterday I purchased a "TUNE BOT" tuning device to help me.

Very useful video. I have played guitar for 30 years and am just now getting back into drumming after 10 years away. Everything came back to me fairly quickly, but getting my right foot back into drumming shape has been the biggest obstacle. I can't seem to find a good setting for my bass pedal and I can't seem to find settings that feel like it used to back in the day. Maybe it isn't my pedal and I'm just getting old. hehe. My right foot just doesn't want to do the things that used to be easy. Maybe it is just time to get a double pedal. heheh

I like it to bounce back and I love to really drive home every bass drum hit, so tight has been my go to. I use the DW2000 single on one kit and DW5000 double on my other kit.

I’d never sacrifice the pedal comfort and playing abilities for “beater should hit center of kick drum”. for 18” kick I use a riser/lifter, it solves the problem. the kick drum sounds and feels really good.

What is the bass drum pedal ? Do you change the spring sometimes ?

I am 48 yo woman, have been drumming for about six months now, and find that my shin gets tired if I try to just play with my heel down, so I mostly play heel up. Sometimes, ,my beater seams to double bounce against the drum and triggers twice. Additionally, my beater swings back and hits my shin and I have a permanent low grade bruise, haha. I feel like I have to kick too hard. I would like to set mine up with easy kick for maximum power. Is this possible?

I like the Sonor Set. Is this the Sonor Limited Edition Artist Series Cottonwood snare? When yes, itS made of nine plies of exquisite-sounding maple? And what Bass-Drum is it from Sonor, which Model? And what Hardware do I see in the clip? Is it DW, and what models/series did you use. Thanks for answering.
@ArtOfDrumming Жыл бұрын
Hey Yes it‘s the artist cotton wood 14x6. Awesome snare! Exactly it‘s a 9 ply maple shell. The kick drum is a 20“ Sonor AQ2 and the finish is called white pearl. Also a maple drum. Snare stand and hihat stand are both DW. Hihat stand is from the 5000 series and the snare stand from the 9000 series 👍

What about smaller bass drums? how do you set it up?
@boomerguy99357 ай бұрын
The main difference will be where the beater hits the batter head. It will hit a higher spot unless you use a riser. Gibraltar makes a wonderful one that is easy to install to the bottom of the hoop and also easy to attach the beater to. I have one and leave it on the bass drum all the time, whether packed or set up. It's adjustable and not expensive.

Do people actually play with their heel off the ground like that? It seems like that would expend a lot of excess leg energy, kind of like moving your whole arm when playing the ride instead of just your wrist.

Was wondering about that too. I prefer heel planted and front of foot doing the work.

I tend to play heel toe a lot. What would be a good setting for that?
@tillsommerdrums2 жыл бұрын
just experiment with the settings and find out what works for you. There is no simple formula to it. Some drummers like a very tight spring for heel toe, a big beater angle and a very long beater and some prefer the exact opposite. But a baseline for trying different settings always is medium to low-medium spring tension and the other options are on factory settings
