For me, I started out fan grip, when I played a lot I had painful chafing on my middle finger from the disc ripping out and I was throwing nose up a lot. I switched to a "power grip" and I don't get the chafing and I throw nose level. For me personally, I get more spin with a power grip but the best benefit is I can play every day without chafing. I found there's a microsecond difference in release between the two (for me) which results in the fan grip coming out sooner. Instead of trying to adjust my release point I run up straight at my intended line for fan grip and run up in an 11:00 position to my line for a power grip. Ya'll need to get off the disc golf course and go to a soccer field with NO WIND and really get to know your arm and your discs. You'll learn more about yourself in 15 minutes on a soccer field than 2 hours playing a round. Scott, you're a National Treasure.

Thanks for the clarification. I was a little disappointed that you didn't address the issue of spin. I think I'm one of the many who discovered that we haven't been getting the pivot and snap out of our throws. I tried the 2 finger throw recommended on Overthrow, and threw an amazing shot at 50% power that I didn't think my body was capable of. Snap, spin, hover mode activated. I'm now trying all sorts of grips like you talked about trying to find a comfortable one that will give me that effect consistently. There is something about focusing on the pinch point where the disc pivots out regardless of where the rest of your fingers are. I really would like an explanation. There are hundreds of us who have experienced something in the last week that we've never seen before, and to just brush it off and say that all grips are equal seems like an oversimplification. Any thoughts on spin and pinch points would be appreciated.

Honestly, this debate was great for me. I started playing back in April. I started with some type of pinch grip, but was told by some other disc golfers that that's a "beginner grip", which is fine, but eventually I'll want to learn a power grip. So I've been practicing a power grip and it feels so awkward and uncomfortable. I'm looking forward to the next time I go out... my form has gotten a lot better, so I'm going to play with pinch grips again.

@owleven2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott, this has been on my mind alot lately as I realized I was one of those people being held back by the power grip. Adjusting my grip I find the disc is spinning much more out of the hand and I am getting more turn and distance out of every throw. On a swing but not releasing the disc, the disc wants to fly out of my hand much more and spin while the "power grip" just keeps it in place in my hand; less spin. Saying how there is no one-size-fits-all grip is the big takeaway here. Find what works to get that spin going + what is comfortable for you = a better technique than you had before. Thanks Scott!!!

Great video as always. I will say that I disagree with one small point. You say that you can throw just as far with a power, pinch, or fan grip, and I just don't think a fan grip will ever have the distance potential as the other two. You said that the preference of grip trumps biomechanics, and I agree with this, meaning that if you prefer a fan grip, it will go farther. The key word is potential. Biomechanically, having the pressure of your fingers on the inside of the rim, opposite the target, creates a stronger grip that can hold more power and will put more force towards the target and more force into the rotation, causing more spin and more distance. Of course, Eagle is outdriving 99% of us with his fan grip, but he can throw a power grip farther. This is a technicality though, and I completely agree with your overall sentiment that grip is individual and there is no correct answer, especially when preference and personal results outweighs the "potential". Just a thought!
@NickCarroll2 жыл бұрын
I have a video I'm going to make this Friday which touches on this subject, because I've seen a few people bring this issue up. But you're correct in that the power grip (as traditionally taught) provides the most power, and the pinch function also helps to create a fulcrum to do that. I think people should start there and work their way to what works best for them.
@SausageFPS2 жыл бұрын
Ive always done a modified version of both the pinch and power...the power pinch where i put pressure on my index fingers and rest of them are in a power grip formation. Love these vids scott!
@cryptoroyer5202 жыл бұрын
What I've found is the pinch grip is great to create that fulcrum and have a forward loading discing for those open bombing shots with no guardians in the way. I switch to the "power grip" for my accurate shots needing a more middle loading zone for accuracy and then the fan grip for putting. Great information Scott
@alwolschleger72422 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this! I feel like there's so much that people say is "the right way," but there's so much out there to parse and sort through. I've ended up with a modified front-loaded power grip, as I don't get clean release on fan grip, pulling off my front finger and backloading my grip in a comfortable way cost me distance.
@udlman12 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I’ve been trying the four fingers under the disc for a while now and it never seemed comfortable. I’ve now started throwing with my index finger on top of the disc and 3 fingers underneath and have increased my distance from 300’ to 350’. One finger on top feels a lot more comfortable than 4 underneath. It also helps keep the nose of the disc down as well.

Hey buddy. Remember " the boys" grip? Joe Ursino? He tucked his thumb under his forefinger on the top of disc? I use it in certain instances. My normal grip is I pinch my thumb ( on top of disc) against pad of middle finger ( on the bottom). My index is basically just along for the ride with the last two curled up tight against the rim of disk.. I am proud of being an O. G. of Oak Grove-- but it didn't exactly do wonders for our long game! and on the pro Tour that held back O. G's pros a lot. I remember the 1st trip to De Laveaga. I was like ' ok so tee off here, and where is the "post" again? You gotta be kidding me, way over there? That's it? I'm fu... ' it was brutal lol especially when we played every hole as par 3. I used exclusively fan grip as a youth player and drifted to power grip for all but my domey putter throws over time both from perceived better distance--but there was certainly a component that let that "power" term imply it was the proper thing to do. I do find that the flatter, and wider rimmed the disc the trickier the fan-grip got for me (not a problem in the early days as there was moderate dome on nearly all discs and those rims weren't big wings yet.) That and in less than ideal grip situations like rain I find the fan-grip harder to keep consistent. Your vid does though make me realize I haven't tried revisiting fan-grip/pinch grip for things above putter in decades. I could be missing out on a good thing. To the fields!
@KillRoy1172 жыл бұрын
My takeaway from the videos was that pinching allows for a better fulcrum to spin the disc around. I remember you had said back when you were throwing WRs that blood used to come out of your fingertips from the force snapping through them. Which for me was alien, I hadnt ever had that feeling of snap/rotation on my backhand. But my forehand is very solid, able to throw 450ft, and I actually have a callus on my throwing finger for years, because of this snap. And this snap is what I was really missing in my backhand which barely goes 325ft at best. For me this specific part of the backhand throw is the least talked about and why I think its gained so much attention. And personally it feels like the final piece of the puzzle for my backhand to be solid. Could you elaborate on this exact snap you get out of your fingertips?
@JinGalactica2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes my fingertips don't make the snapping noise and it goes well over 380, sometimes even over 400 ft. I'm sure Scott will elaborate more later, but what works for me is whipping your elbow and shoulders with great timing. It truly is about technique over brute strength.

Even though there is no way I can bend that finger into a power grip, I found I throw more consistently with my new “less” powerful grip. Purely because I was forcing an uncomfortable power for over a decade. Doing what is consistent & clean is the way to go. Thanks for the content Scott.

I have been experimenting for a long time trying to figure out what to do with it other than cutting it off to get it out of the way hahaha. I have found that the pinch grip helps give me a place to put it since I cannot curl it under the rim. I have also tried just laying it out in a sort of modified fan/power grip where other than my index the rest are curled under the rim. Between the two I can see the pinch gets me more distance but the other gets me more control. I would love to hear other things for me to try if anyone has any input into this?!

Loving the debate and adding your two cents. I think the biggest tidbit I've gotten out of this so far is that gripping with forefinger and thumb is more important on higher speed throws than the other fingers positioning, even though they all play a part. Gripping more with the pinky or back fingers and a looser forefinger or even floating forefinger can be more accurate/comfortable FOR ME on approach shots but was causing me to miss left/early RHBH on those higher speed drives.

Fantastic video Scott, but would have liked if you could have given a ballpark guesstimate on what percentage of your students use which grip.

Awesome tip that'll hopefully end the "Power Grip"..grip. I'll try it on my next session. Thanks Scott(🐐). Freaking legend🤩🤙

I'm one of those who can't throw with all 4 fingers in the disc. I've been playing since 95 and I actually started with just 2 fingers and then switched to 3 with my pinky off the disc. I used to be able to throw far with the 3 fingers so like Scott said, whatever grip gets the disc out clean is what u used. I always told beginners to try the 3 finger cause to me the disc came out cleaner, then if need be start adding the 4th finger.

Can we all just agree on a new name for the power grip here? Like the '4 finger grip' or 'full grip' or something maybe more clever but not misleading?

I don’t know why I waste my time on the “other” channels. Stokely is the Boss of all teachers.

Thanks Scott, this was actually helpful. Even though I sorta thought about it myself it's nice to get a validation from a pro

The power grip is the best because it's the most powerful. It's called power grip for a reason and is the only correct way to throw. And it's also important to have a huge reach back, that'll add like 200 ft to your drive.

Thats false having a huge reach back can hurt or help depending on how you are throwing already. Heimburg for example doesnt even fully extend his arm and still is one of the top distance throwers in the sport

So can you do a pinch grip with your middle finger? My index is short and it feels like a chore to wrap it around the rim of midranges and putters

Start with the guidelines that I cover and if you need to modify for your specific hand you now know what the red flags are to be sure you're getting it right.
