The 4th instalment of my Great Walks series in New Zealand. Welcome to episode 4 the Lake Waikaremoana Track!
Total Distance: 46km (28.5mi) Total Days: 4
Located on the North Island of New Zealand.
Day 1: Whanganui Hut - Waiharuru Campsite
6km (3.7mi). Approx 2hrs.
Day 2: Waiharuru Campsite - Korokoro Campsite
14km (8.7mi). Approx 5.5hrs + Side Trip to Korokoro Falls 1hr return
Day 3: Korokoro Campsite - Panekire Hut
12km (7.5mi). Approx 4.5hrs
Day 4: Panekire Hut to Onepoto Shelter.
9km. (5.6mi) Approx 4.5hrs
We drove down from Auckland and stayed at the Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park the night prior. The next morning we drove to Onepoto Carpark/Shelter where we met the water taxi who dropped us off at the decommissioned Whanganui Hut. This way we could spend the next 4 days walking back to the car and our packs were lighter for the accent on day 3.

Oh Hayley, your creative acumen and skills continue to astound me. What a fantastic production and story of your time with Cindy. Full marks to her for taking the trail on as a novice and I thank her for introducing the word ‘photocopy’ to my lexicon of profanities. It’s a real goody. Congratulations again on your unique ability to bring your audience along with you for your hikes.

Go Cindy, I started hiking at 60, 2 years ago and seeing all Cindy’s beginner hiking angst makes me smile knowingly, my body! that stiffness. I love my hiking now. Yay that you have Hayley, my beginner hikes were all solo ones. I made so many mistakes 😂😂😂

Thanks Hayley for another fantastic video. As a 60 year old hiker I absolutely loved Cindy's contribution, I could really relate. I completed the Milford and Routeburn tracks in March and I'm pretty sure I used ALL the profanities OFTEN but now I can add photocopy to the list. Keep up the great work and I'll keep adding these hikes to my to do list.

This was a hilarious video, this is the same things that happens when I take my non hiking mates out, (either walk alone or with slow people for me) 😂 The "definitely not me calculating how our slow pace is gonna affect us on the long days 😐😐😐" is every time I'd stop 😂

Your series on NZ walks is killer. Helping me with my wish list of future walks! Hadnt really consided Lake Waikaremoana before. Out of interest, you should check out the 'Around the Mountain Circuit'. Its not a 'great walk of NZ', but its meant to be really good. 4 to 5 days around Mt Taranaki including an acent if you wanted to. Did the Mt summit a few years ago but didnt know about the circuit at the time. P.s. - Cindy is a legend

Hahah yes I was pretty happy to have 2 storylines going for this video. One for Cindy and one for the track! I actually really liked the track and think it's very deserving of being a great walk in terms of the actual hike and what you see. (You can tell that some of the signs need a bit of a facelift) I also heard that people think the Panekire Hut is run down but coming from Australia any hut in New Zealand is a cool novelty 😂 I am more of a lake/river girl than ocean so that persuades me a bit though. I did like it better than the Rakiura great walk!! 😊
