Jason is correct about the ports. If you want to connect out you don't need to open any ports but if you want to accept connections in you need to open them up.

Awesome, thanks Kyle. I will be watching a few of your videos to help me setup my node.

@@hamradiowithkevin sounds good. I'm not sure I've ever recorded an Allstar video on my channel. I think they have always lived on Jason's. Maybe I should record a few. Lol.

If you do Allstar what tricks work best for you? I am hoping for a short learning curve

What "scares" most folks with getting a node is it requires remote connection (aka ssh) for setup, and to get beyond the basic setup, it is done via command line (shell). Once you get a handle on these two aspects, you can nearly do anything you want. Auto connections, custom web page interface, phone app control, weather announcements, multi mode bridging (ie DMR to Allstar) and much more.

Can you recommend some Allstar setup videos that are short and to the point, rather than 30 to 90 minutes long?

How much for a complete setup?

The best person to ask is Jayson, my experience is roughly you will be in it for $300 or so (2024)

Actually, we've gone to 6 digit node numbers (if you need more than 2) because Allstar's gotten so popular that we're running out of 5 digit IDs...
