If we were neighbors I'd bring you over some of my home roasted coffee beans to brew and see what happens when two $71 dollar guitars are played at the same time.

I learned a way of wrapping string on tuner so it can not slip.really added to tuning stability,and also making sure you only go around tuning post 4 to five times,making sure string is wrapping under itself and not on top
@GuitarsDoneRight

Actually 2 or 3 wraps is generally enough, but despite what you may have read, a few extra wraps has no noticable effect on tuning stability if you properly stretch the strings

The adjustment of the nut slots is the tricky part since you need files made for nut slots. I follow the '3rd fret test' and lower the slots until the gap at fret 2 is heard as a 'clink' and cannot really be seen when pressed. Check intonation is easy and done most of the way at the factory. I swap all the saddle Allen screws from 10mm long to 8mm long (6 screws). that lets you keep the saddles low and no screw sticking up to chafe the right hand, and it is cheap! I noticed the holes all need a toothpick with yellow glue to reinforce the bores ... the basswood body and the cheap maple neck are not very good quality woods... It is a CHEAP guitar to buy so needs care in setup and some minor remedies. The neck heel pocket can be dirty with shavings in cheap guitars as well and a toothpick with yellow glue to moisten the 4 neck heel holes to tighten and strengthen them is a good idea... .

The setup costs more than the Glarry lol. That being said, I have an Aiersi Tele copy, and a Solo kit Tele and both are stellar playing instruments. I had to upgrade the nuts, tuners, and do some minor fretwork and hammer down some high frets on the kit, but in the end they are great, hold tune for a week, and are a ton of fun to play and I don't care about dings or scratches.

Pretty close! I think the Glarry Tele today is about $90 and I get $80 for a setup and strings. But setups on new guitars don't usually involve new nuts or much fretwork, so many people can probably do a decent job DIY style. I should have my setup book out by the end of the year. If you haven't seen it yet, my book on fretwork - Level & Crown, covers fret replacement too and is just ten bucks on Amazon.

Thing i noticed on these new cheaper guitars is, they like to leave the first fret high and the nut slots real high. I guess its ok because when you dont have the correct tools and try to use a piece if folded sandpaper to deepen the slots you don't have to worry too much about going too far, lol I had wanted to see what a 24" scale guitar felt like and im glad that i pulled the string on a 75 dollar Glarry mustang. Kinda scared to do a fret level as i have the super cheap tools, but really only the 11th fret was high.
@GuitarsDoneRight
@GuitarsDoneRight 10 ай бұрын
I work on sixty to eighty guitars each month and I honestly haven't noticed much difference in percentage of high nut slots between cheap and expensive guitars. They all tend to have slots a bit (usually not very) high. Finding a high first fret is pretty rare, actually. For some reason, high frets tend to run between 7th and 21st (or 22nd, 24th, etc.) frets and the pricier the guitar, the more likely it will have high frets or at least some high fret ends. My book, "Level & Crown", on Amazon, is the poor man's guide to fretwork! Covers fret replacement, level & crown, tools and more.

I think in the past I was taking too much material off the tops, and had a hard time re crowning them. They say these cheaper guitars frets are very soft, so id definitely have to agree lol. I wonder what it's like with the stainless steel frets? I had thought if I ever did a re fret that id choose those.

This demonstrates some of the drawbacks on buying a Chinese guitar that is the least expensive on the market. The metal used is the cheapest metal available and is easily stripped. The Philips screw heads strip easily - Allen key screws in the bridge saddles strip easily - the nickel/chrome plating is very thin and there is often rust issues - the fret metal is very soft and can wear out in a year of regular playing - the body wood although light is very soft and the screws strip out the holes very easily. These guitars come from the factory with little to no setup so a complete setup is mandatory and it is not unusual to encounter fret sprout or some frets that buzz and you must do a fret level job. These guitars are perfect if you want to learn luthier skills that can be applied to future purchases. The pickups are usually ceramic magnet types and give a muddy sound especially the neck one. The Chinese do however sell inexpensive ( around $25 a set ) Alnico 5 pickups which improve definition immensely. The tuners are adequate at best and often fail out right or just don't tune smoothly so these plus pickups are almost mandatory upgrade candidates. The nut is always plastic and often poorly cut so a bone nut is another probable upgrade. String trees are beyond cheap and must be replaced. The good news is if you do all the necessary mods you will have a guitar that will sound and play very close to a guitar 3 times the price. The resale value unfortunately will remain super low so don't think you going to build something of value to another guitarist. Do it to learn and enjoy it yourself.

Thanks for your feedback. I don't have time to respond to everything here, but I want to tackle a few things to prevent misinformation - First about "Chinese guitar" - the country of origin has little bearing on quality of the product. The Chinese are producers who take orders from consumer countries and build to the buyers' specs. If a U.S. company asks for cheap products, they'll get cheap products. Chinese are as capable of building fine guitars as any other country and have done so. The U.S. does not have a monopoly on quality. As for the cheap metal, screws, etc. - this is common throughout guitars in the sub-$400 range and not inherent to a particular country. Nearly all guitars come from the factory needing a setup - no matter their price! I'm including American-made Fenders, high-quality Schecters, Gibsons, etc. I know because I often have customers bring right from the store or right after un-boxing. AlNiCo pickups are not "better" than ceramic pickups. They are generally preferred by those who play clean, whereas the ceramics are better suited for overdrive playing. * People reading this - be careful about the content you consume online. Many people who post about guitars may mean well, but not have the proper understanding and experience to give correct information. *
@nrich5127
@nrich5127 3 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarsDoneRight Thanks for responding - I however wish to highlight that in my comment I stated "buying a Chinese guitar that is the least expensive on the market". The Chinese can produce very good instruments at an obvious higher cost. I was referring to the least expensive guitar range on the market which is Glarry. It is amazing that they can make a functional guitar for around $85 US. I was stating that at this price there are areas where the quality control is SOMETIMES sub par. There have been numerous reports of guitars that had issues such as tuning keys that were defective, non functioning pickups due to an improper soldering job, rusty metal parts on the bridge due to incomplete plating, flaws in the finish of the body, improperly cut nuts and occasional a bad fret job. From the exact same run of guitars you can receive one that is perfect. I have some experience with Chinese imports and I have noted that the number one priority at the Chinese factory is to get the product shipped at the desired cost. There is tremendous pressure on the workers to keep their quota of builds per day at the level to maintain production targets. The guitars are built - packaged - shipped to a distributor in the US where they are shipped directly to clients. There is no intermediate point of a quality control check at this price. If you have a problem the distributor will try to make it right so you're satisfied so I am in no way slandering Glarry because they stand behind their product. In numerous reviews on KZbin the ceramic pickups although adequate were noted to have a "muddy" and less defined tone so they were "identified" as an area to be upgraded - this included Fender Squire Bullet and Affinity guitars which are more than double the price. These observations are not my fabrication - but are from highly skilled players who know guitars from a players point of view. My intention was to make buyers be aware that the unbelievable low price has also to be "tempered" with a reality check on what you're receiving. And yes you are right - don't take my word for it - search KZbin for all the reviews on inexpensive guitars and read the comments from buyers who had issues - and then draw you own conclusions.

I know the Glarry is cheap but I think the costumer screwed it up trying to adjust the trust rod the wrong way, I've got one of their bass guitars, I bought just to have for recording on demo's and the trust rod worked just fine even though I'm sure the nut is cheap metal. Looks like this guy was turning the trust rod the wrong way trying to add relief, with how straight that neck was, and stripped his nut when the tension got too high. The bass I got was already pretty straight when they sent it too me and I had to add a little relief but nothing like this guitar with all the strings on the frets at the 7th. Good video I liked what I got out of the cheap Glassy bass and ordered one of these Tele's to tinker on, it certainly won't replace my strat standard but if I mess it up I will not be crying like I would if I messed up my strat. Figure it will make a good learning tool for doing some modding and some advance set up work.

Adjusting the truss rod and polishing frets is not hard at all and is definitely something all guitarists should be able to do. Filing nut slots needs a bit more precision but it's definitely not something you need to be a professional luthier to manage. It's amazing just how many guitarists out there are ignorant about the most basic maintenance of their instrument, down to something as simple as cleaning it regularly.
@GuitarsDoneRight
@GuitarsDoneRight 3 жыл бұрын
Proper nut files cost $100 per set and you need several sets to cover a range of gauges. While the basics of setups may seem obvious, ask any experienced tech if his setups didn't greatly improve over their 1st 10 years.
@marcuslewitzki4610
@marcuslewitzki4610 3 жыл бұрын
@@GuitarsDoneRight Obviously, practice makes perfect when it comes to anything and guitar setup is no different. I have been doing my own guitar setup on my guitars for well over 25 years now and I've only managed to mess up one piece of bone over that time, and that was in the very beginning. The actual performances of the nuts I've made during that time has not seen any significant improvements as I've always been very methodical, taking my time cutting the slots to the correct depth and width. What has improved is the over-all aesthetics of the nuts, with a greater finish. This is not a crucial aspect of the nut though. As for the cost of tools, there are cheaper files you can buy to start out with and even if these aren't the best they definitely do the job and you can upgrade the quality over time.

I understand that PRS ships it's guitars with 0.07. I have to drop all my guitars down to 0.05 (well...0.055 for the 6th, 0.05 for the first, then eyeballing the gradual "increase"😂😂😂😂 My tech (an awesome luthier to boot) gives me a hard time about it every time, wondering how anybody can play with action that low. Luckily he has Plek'd them, so buzzing is not an issue. Laugh if you want to, but the tendonitis in my right hand cant handle anything more!

Glarry is probably close to the cheapest options out there, but hard to beat for the price. Frets will wear out quickly - that's probably the biggest drawback. But $100 less than a Squier or Ibanez, etc. I think it's a decent choice for a beginner, who might be tempted to sell a more valuable guitar when the learning curve steepens. Thank you so much sir! I just ordered one the other day and this video will help a a lot!!! Now here is a question; I use my telecasters for jazz and usually run 11 or 12 gauge roundwounds. @billcastello5859
@billcastello5859 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the only thing heavy strings give you is firmer feedback. Not all necks work with all bodies. Not only are tge neck pockets different, but scale length will often require moving the bridge. For instance one model may have a bit more length in the body than another depending on how the neck butts into the pocket, even tho the 2 guitars are same scale length. At any rate, a Glarry guitar is cheaper than a Squier neck, so it's a rather moot point.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "body kit". As for upgrades - I wouldn't upgrade anything until I'd played the guitar awhile and decided what I did and did not like about it. Then I would know what I wanted to upgrade and what the priorities are. I see a lot of people just throwing money around on "upgrades" for no apparent reason that I can see. They pay me to do the work, so I shouldn't complain, but.. "Better" components aren't always better. And more expensive components won't make you a better player.

I downloaded the free "Guitar Tuna" app, then paid the five bucks for "pro" version that included mandonlins, banjos, ukes, etc. Honestly, I can't hear any difference between cheap Chinese $4 strings and Elixrs! So I split the difference and put D'Addarios on everything. I generally put nines on full scale guitars and 10s on short scales.

Only your ears can answer that. Depends on the sound you want and what your ears are telling you

As a no nothing I wonder what you wiped the strings with?
@GuitarsDoneRight
@GuitarsDoneRight 3 жыл бұрын
I put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on a rag; work it into the rag, then using the oiled part and a dry part of the rag, I do a wipe-on/wipe-off in one stroke. You don't want much oil on the strings - not enough to feel, just a thin coat to protect the strings.

FastFret is a fairly cheap wipe on string protectant in most all guitar/uke shops

i dont think the truss rod nut was nessasery striped ive found the nut rench they suply does not fit . ive come across this a few times on these guitars i had to go through a lot of diferent nut renchs befor i found one that fit enough to turn

The most popular truss nut sizes (for those that take allen wrenches) is: 4mm, 3/16 and 1/8" - in that order.

would Teflon work on the string guides?
@GuitarsDoneRight
@GuitarsDoneRight 3 жыл бұрын
Seems to me that it wouldn't reduce friction nearly as much as the roller guide which has very little contact on the strings. Also, Teflon would wear away eventually. But it would probably be better than nothing.

Why are two guitar set at the same string height going to feel the same if you have removed the nut from the equation?
@GuitarsDoneRight
@GuitarsDoneRight 3 жыл бұрын
Two guitars are not likely to feel the same no matter what you do. When you're setting relief and string height, you want to isolate every possible consideration. Measuring string height with the nut in the equation and before setting relief, really doesn't tell you much about your saddle settings because you have other influences.

The Fender sound a little "crisper" but not all that much difference and yes, a better guitar doesn't make you a better player...I know...I'm just a hack who likes to pretend Im a star!....LOL but i like to play once in a while. It will take my mind of things a lot....Music heals.

Thanks for the feedback! As for the crisper sound - that can be a result of having your pickup poles a bit closer to the strings or a bit more treble or AlNiCo pickups being compared to ceramic. If I had 5 cheapie guitars and 5 Fender Player series and you were blindfolded in an audience - unless you are a pro with very sensitive ears - I doubt you or I could tell the difference and pick out the 5 cheapies.

Moving ahead without fixing the stripped Trussrod nut is a bad decision. It indicates that the tech doesn't understand that correcting neck relief is a continual process in the life of a guitar; particularly in these cheap guitars with necks made from green wood. Correcting back-bow with heavier strings is a legitimate method only when a functional Trussrod nut has been released fully.

@Carl but I'm sure you heard him mention it is not worth it because of how cheap the guitar is. I would start at $100 just to extract. And that's just the start and if things go simple. Who knows if previous owner stripped the threads also? A good tech would ask the customer if he wants to invest in a $100+ job on a $70 guitar. And 9 times out of 10 they are gonna say no if they're smart...

Im sure its a fine instrument. But the name is lackluster. Glarry, Grote, monoprice, Donner. With most if these budget brands being equal, right out of the box, you really need a name that grabs attention. I guess Donner not so plain.

What he is saying is, if you are so inept that you can't properly use a hex key don't attempt to do a set up on your guitar. Just take it to someone qualified to do it.

And if you have to do that just pay $100-$150 for a better guitar. That's about what a professional set up costs these days.

There's a whole lot more to doing a setup than using a hex key. Unfortunately, there are many people who use misinformation on the internet to guide them on their DIY setup attempts. The harsh truth is that you don't know what you don't know.
