Here is a tip, Frank: the sound of the letter "J" in portuguese is the same as in french (Je = I) and so it is for the letter "G" in "GE" and "GI". In "GA", "GO" and "GU" it's the same as in italian and spanish.

I first heard that song with the Damien Rice himself back in 2005 and I was blown away. immediately became a fan. it was a nice surprise many years later when Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge came out with their version to this lovely song.
