This is a nice tribute to Seve. His game had left him by this stage in his career, but it was one of the greatest scrambling displays I've ever seen. It's a great testament to the man and a great message for young golfers everywhere to keep your head in the game and never give up.

Seve was suffering from chronic lower back problems that hindered his game terribly from the early 90s, It was amazing that he was able to still be the talisman of the European team despite not being able to play anywhere near average let alone his best. What a man !

Seve.. What a legend.. Didn't hit a fairway in 12 holes in this match but was only 1 down.. He was out first in the singles every player behind him watching say how much he was fighting with no game and inspired them to play well..

As a teenager, this event marked my realisation that Seve was past his prime. It really stuck in my memory. His vulnerability and resilience made him even MORE fascinating to watch.

Nice to see that the spectators were very respectful back in the day and enjoyed the fantastic golf on display, whether the player is European or American is irrelevant, golf is the winner.

Craig: great observation. Golf fans outside the ropes today act more like football fans. We were once proper, mannerly and respectful of others who might be near. Now we’re sadly ordinary.

Yep.. 1999 ruined it… before that crowds were partizan but fair… after that it became a free for all.

In my very humble opinion I don't believe there will ever be such a charismatic master of the golf course that will come close to Seve, so sadly missed by so many.

The European editor of Golf Monthly witnessed this match and said that front 9 by Seve was the greatest 9 holes he ever saw. Lehman must have been confounded at how he was only 1 up at the turn with Seve not hitting a single fairway in regulation. The greatest scrambler ever, bar none! Via con Dios Seve

As great as Mickelson is around the green, Seve really was something else. Even when his back was troubling him and his long game was struggling, the short game remained intact. Some of the over par rounds I remember watching when I was younger still had some astounding moments within 100 yards of the green.

Your uncle was the greatest by far...the one who make me love the game, the one I copied for years, a true genius and a true gentleman...I met him in 1993 ( I was 10yo ) on a fairway at the Cannes Mougins Open in France while I was chasing his autograph ... he gave me autograph, a ball and a smile... I stoke frozen on the fairway after that with tears in my eyes... what a great man ... always be num1 in most people hearts and espacially mine..

He gave me much pleasure watching him. His enthusiasm for the game was awe inspiring. He was an anti authoritarian by nature, fabulous. He lives on in our memories, and youtube, and his influence. His legacy is immense, Olly, Sergio, Rham, Europe, the Ryder cup, golf, and humanity.

Regardless of this result Seve still inspired Europe to an overall victory, ask the players (then and now), they remember this. He remained the inspiration of the team, America blew it, like they have in all recent Ryder Cups, 3 players needing pars for victory, in my mind it's worse than the miracle of Medinah.

Remember this match vividly. Seve wasn't close to a fairway all day but would somehow find a way to hang in there. He lost but it was an epic display of his scrambling skills.

From 100 yards in - there was no-one better. If I had to ask someone to hole a putt for me - Seve or Nick Faldo would be my choices (maybe Tiger) any day of the week. Unlike Hale Irwin at Lytham in 1979 Open, Lehman didn't buckle here in the face of Seve's artistry. He was probably the best American playing golf in 1995-96. Phenomenal stuff.

The game of golf gave Seve a lot, but he also gave a lot back to the game of golf, so it seems a travesty that golf and life in general kicked him in the face so hard, so often during the last 15 years of his life. There were good times of course - captaining a winning Ryder Cup side in Spain (though without crippling injuries, he should have played) being one of them. But while Langer, Lyle, Couples et al get to enjoy successful Senior careers, Seve has to endure injury and then cancer. :-(

I take it that most of you lads commenting play golf? How often in a matchplay situation have we been in the fairway or on the green in regulation, thought you've won the hole and end up either drawing or losing it? It's no wonder the great man won 5 world match play titles, I just can't believe tiger doesn't have the same record in it, he's on a par with seve.

Seve’s back had completely failed at this point, it’s had got steadily worse since the 90s and he could barely turn on the back swing. His swing was unrecognisable from him in his prime. It was an incredible feat of sheer talent and will that he was able to play in that Ryder Cup and bring the impact that he did. Tom Lehman said the first nine holes of this match was Seve. He witnessed the greatest exhibition of Golf he had ever seen.

I share seve's birthday & have a link to Ollie through my brothers girlfriends girlfriend. TP9 Mizuno were my first irons that I made sure I used because Ollie was the best player at the 1991 Ryder Cup- even though he lost to zinger in the singles- who is also wicked..
