Lordy...a year? You have such a beautiful home, I can't imagine not caring for it better. I do get being overwhelmed though, it happens to me frequently. I just started the video, but I would Sweep it all to the middle to bag and throw it away. The kids obviously don't care about anything up there.

Hi Beth! I appreciate that you talk about neurodivergence in your videos. My husband and I clean up after our autistic teen every night as part of his bedtime routine. We swap, so one helps him with food and shower/toothbrushing/pajamas while the other one tidies the family room and kitchen. Our son loves nothing better than “sprinkling” - taking things like cracker crumbs or bits of leaves (it’s crunchy leaf season) or kinetic sand and just dropping it on the floor over and over. Basically, there can be particles everywhere…but that’s ok! We try limit sensory play to the family room, we hired a pest control company to prevent ants, and we vacuum it up every night. Manageable! Sprinkling is an easy clean up. It’s way better than managing a meltdown or trying to avoid maladaptive behaviors - like pulling a bald spot in his hair or other self-harm. Autism is a fascinating thing to live with, but our guide stone is keeping him happy and healthy, and it seems like yours is, too. Thank you for sharing. You’re doing a great job informing but respecting their privacy, too!
@feraltradwife13 күн бұрын
That is so true. Sprinkling is an easy swap, way better than harm. I wish I was able to tidy every night and I feel like a year from now I will be someone who tidies like that!

I’ve been watching through my tv KZbin for a while…. And could never figure out how to comment. I’m home sick today- which I never do- even terribly ill- I will make myself work from home. But- today, I’m allowing myself to binge watch your channel and just vegetate. As a former SPED teacher and current school psychologist, I have to tell you how magnificently HEALTHY you are! Seriously- I have ADHD and so do my hubby and daughter. Both of my boys have CLEAR spectrum tendencies. SO I GET YOU. Your ability to just be transparent and REAL with the viewers is undoubtedly providing so much anxiety relief for so many. A side effect is the gift of self-love. I just have to say, is so refreshing to see a mom who really cares about knowing their autistic children’s preferences and how to treat them like humans- not treating them as if they were neurotypical - but accepting them for how they operate and loving them the whole way. My biological mother was trying her best as a single mom with 4 kids including one autistic son and he often was just not involved because he would meltdown if something didn’t go right. We all ended up being split up into different homes to deal with our own traumas and such and it was hard as an older sister to watch my baby siblings grow up from afar but now it is a great testimony because he is absolutely thriving, creating KZbin videos, planning to live independently, and so much more. You have restored my faith in humanity today ❤

I clean up after her and would do it until the day I’m no longer here. She will be 7 in December and is still not totally potty trained either and I just really can’t stand that people are so quick to judge! I start cleaning and find a hammer, well it needs to go back to the tool box in the garage, then the tool box needs to be organized. Then I find the wall anchors i bought to hang some pictures in the bed room, then the books shelf needs to be moved so I can hang the pictures then I need to clean behind the book shelf and I don't read any of these books anymore so they need to go to half priced books so off to carboard mountain I go. Like king Artur in the Holy Grail with my coconuts . At the end of the day, I crash in my recliner in the still messy living room where I found the hammer. I probably didn't put the screwdriver away that I used to secure the wall anchors for the pictures above the bookshelf in my bed room. More side quests to come as a result.

My autistic friend was once as a teenager absolutely heartbroken. She told me that her mother believed she was doing drugs! I could not comprehend how her mother could think that, cause honestly we were very square as teens. One qeekend, I stayed over, and it was dinner time. Her mom at the table giggled, and said to my friend "haha, you got that stoner look again that you've got recently". That's when I got it. Her mom wasn't actually thinking she was smoking weed. It was just that that's how she commented upon my friend's absent minded facial expression. She didn't think anything of it, because, it was just allegorical, and of course, the giggle alone would reveal to a neurotypical teen that she didn't mean it literally. That moment explained so much about so many things my friend told me about her parents

I did resets on my sons rooms. I knew they COULDN'T do it. In a way, I'm glad i have ADHD. That way, I understood them completely. When I was little my mom was going to be out of the house for the day. She said, "If you love me, your room will be clean when I get home. I was around 9 years old. The room was overwhelming. It was my sister and I's room. I tried so hard. But my ADHD brain was in full force. I would find things and stop and play, I needed to use the toilet. Since I was using the toilet... I should get a drink. Oh, it would be a great idea to get something to put some water in, and take to my room. Back in an overwhelming room... let's clean this one stupid spot that is not going to show that I did anything. Ya, so she gets home, goes straight to our room, and says I don't love her. So long story... I love understanding my kids. I taught them fast ways to clean up big stuff so it looks like you're making headway. They learned to do laundry, make a bed, clean a bathroom, and mop a floor. But I will keep my ADHD. and my kids, granddaughter, and I will all get each other and be there to understand and help each other. Your ADHD friend from Wyoming.

Nancy that was so heartbreaking. I am so sorry your mom said that to you and put that level of pressure on you. It made me catch my breath just now. I love that you are understanding and helping your kids. You are an amazing mother and deeply loved.

i'm so sorry, Nancy. it's horrible when moms say things like that. i used to wet the bed and my mom would say i did it b/c i didn't love her. was making extra work for her. i did feel badly about it. but, not doing on purpose, so that really hurt me.

you did such a wonderful clean up on that very exceptionally messy room, Beth. and all in one day!! i understand how you feel about all or nothing, as i am that way. my house only gets totally clean when expecting someone to come over and luckily (or not?) no one ever comes over here!! lol i told myself the other day, that maybe a rule of working in each room every time i have to go thru it, for only 3-5 mins would be a nice habit to start. i only am in my family room, bedroom or bathroom and occasionally in kitchen in any day. so, we all go potty at least a few times a day, so when i do, i should spend even 2 mins picking up. clear counter, whatever. and, as i have to walk thru my bedroom to get there, so spend a few mins there too. we've seen on your 10 min videos how much can really get done in that short amount of time, so will be interesting. obviously, will still need longer on some days if some things need more cleaning. and if someone like you, with family and pets, is doing it, may have to spend 10 mins here and there, as well. what do you think? is that something that would work for you?

My adhd grandsons room is an organized mess. What looks like chaos to someone else makes perfect sense to him. He knows where everything is and doesn’t want it messed with. He has trouble concentrating when reading so he spins around in his desk chair and listens to music while he’s reading. He gets straight A’s so it works.
