Hong Kong secondary school students received the results of their university entrance exams on July 21, 2021. Seven of the 49,976 students who sat this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams achieved perfect scores. This is the first year the test results were sent to students via SMS.

I agree, I believe these things are possible, but working long term at them at such a high level it can some times be futile to keep up with it, especially if you aren’t interested. I believe parents should have high grades as a standard, but by no means be frustrated with low grades or fails unless consisting or there’s an underlying problem

In Japan, people who aren't content with the results of entrance exams continue studying to pass the next year exams, which is called rounin(浪人) in Japanese. In Hong Kong, are there people studying for another year to enroll in the university they want to enter?
@randompoptart1286
@randompoptart1286 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, there are! In Hong Kong, these people are referred to as「自修生」, which basically means people who self-study, since people who would like to take the exam again would spend the remaining time studying outside of school, given that they have graduated from secondary school. Few people may choose to repeat the last year of secondary school completely instead of just retaking the exam.

I don’t see much people talking about this but I am from HK and currently have just graduated from high school in Canada. I must say that there is a BIG DIFFERENCE in the education system. It is completely unfair that a big exam DSE will determine your entire post secondary plans. There is almost to no freedom in learning and choosing what you want to study. Yes, some can say that the schooling in Asia is what makes them so smart but that is only because they are FORCED to. They are pressured into trying they HARDEST and there is no room for relaxation. School in Canada is completely different, as we do we not have an exam at the end of our senior school year that determines where we can go. Of course it is based on marks, but those are accumulated from grade 10-12. The final exams for each subject in every grade do happen but they add into our average from other assignments so they aren’t too stressful. I am not saying that HK school system is HORRIBLE but I just feel that it needs change. Students need to be happy, its their prime year and I hope that people will remember that we only live once.

I am now 67, and can look back at all those years of consistently being valedictorian from kindergarten, all the way to elementary, high school and the first 2 years of college, then stopped education for religion.. all my life in a blur, my take away is it might be better to just to start a business, rather than to achieve a diploma, and missing out a lot in life, especially in your youth.. my biggest regret- -I should have learned the piano, could have been much happier..you only live once, and to be young is the best in life.. i hope there is another chance at life, I will just play the piano, enough with all this academic excellence, it really does not make you happy...and neither does religion, but I digress..lol congratulations to the lower scorers, you can have happier lives now.. a little less money, perhaps, but to be free to live is priceless.. no offense to the topnotchers, just speaking with the great advantage of hindsight..I am also happy for them.

HKU and Hong Kong has one of the most prestigious and excellent medical programs in the world. They also have the best professors for different medical-related subjects such as pathology, surgery, etc. Also, you need to top it of with their geography which is dense, and highly urbanized. Hence, it contributes to why most of the students want to pursue medicine there. I can't see an objective reason why students would study forestry, and botany in a place like HK.

I genuinely hope to see one day in Asia parents (and society) quit pressuring children that only medicine is a reputable career path. Some may love medicine, but many select only due to status and money - leading to high burnouts and suicides. Losing a child is not worth any status or money. If opportunity presents, please, you’re more than welcome to study in US. All fields are important and encouraged, which leads to creativities and innovations. Art and creativity are vital in human culture and interaction as well.

You will never have perfect score in Gaokao. So Gaokao I guess is way difficult than DSE.
@jennyemmycubing175
@jennyemmycubing175 3 жыл бұрын
I see some of the replies are biased and don’t really provide much information. FYI the DSE exam is taken exclusively in Hong Kong. It follows a different score system, has different subjects and syllabus. The Gaokao exam is used in Mainland China. I am not very sure how that works but it has slightly different subjects and format and it determines students chances of entering mainland universities instead of the ones in HK.

Many young and talented people in Hong Kong are emigrating to other countries such as nearby Australia and New Zealand. Hong Kong is a very expensive city and housing is limited.

We need to replace the word perfect for these situation, because scores arent perfect they are just maximum. Technically the test can be more or less difficult. Congrats to these student, and the rest that sot the exam.
@codename495

Well, if they correctly answered every question of the exam then technically it was a perfect score. There is nothing said in regard to the difficulty, version or even the maximum possible score so, perfect is the correct term. Perfect : without blemish.

nice perfect scores but now what? Sure it was a tough journey but that score is just a number. Guys don’t let a number on a piece of paper define who you can be or what you want to be. In the end a piece of paper is a piece of paper and what really counts is the life decisions you make and effort you put in

I always think It's better to focus on "what you want to be" rather than studying every topics at the high school. Even though I benefitted from this kind of national university entrance exam, I still think studying multiple topics that you won't use in the future is a waste of time and efforts.
