Tau might suck at melee. But during the chaos fortress assault I had a lone squad of fire warriors stuck in melee at the chaos gate and they replenished faster than the enormous swarm of cultists could kill them. It was literally a mosh pit with 2 or 3 tau dying and re-spawning infinitely.

Recently I was doing a T'au playthrough in DoW Dark Crusade... and I decided to experiment a bit. Necron HQ mission. I just fortified my starting position and slowly built up resources. When I had enough, I basically built a SWARM OF COMBAT DRONES. I skipped most Pylons and Zerg Rushed to the end, killing most Necron units and destroying all Monoliths. Then, I just ran my Commander, Placed the Bomb, ran back and evacuated all living troops. No casualties. Only drones lost. Big success.

I know that the topic of alien species is not explored and it is more about armor (I really like this) but what happens is within the Tau thinking which seeks to be practical,what advantage bringing species to the battlefield to fulfill a role, if you can create armor or technology that fulfill it a MILLION times better. Take as an example something as basic as the Crisis armor, one of them can give problems to some Space Marines and is a VERY BASIC armor in a Tau army.

It's a bit late but the main reason they don't have many auxiliaries in the model range is that they would just be other factions intermingled with their forces. This would detract from other factions (Former Imperial auxiliaries would just be imperial guardsman for their board profile, hardly worth it.) Vespids are pretty popular though, they're pretty good reserves to have swooping in. But yeah, there's practically no reason to make another model line when they already exist.

Whats funny is everyone I talk to tells me that the Forced Sterilization thing is something their own codex states that they don't do. Though considering the narrator is Imperial, its possible its a form of in universe bias.

Not too big into 40k lore, so take it with a grain of salt: Besides in this game apparrently, forced sterilization only ever happened on a few Tau worlds that were neighbouring each other. They didn't do it right from the start, but began it due to the humans misunderstaning the greater good. The humans on this worlds thought that it was a religion and started to worship the greater good like it was god. This went unnoticed, until a Tau ship that was traversing the immaterium, got safed from a demon attack by a mysterious warp being that looked like a hindu-god. The being introduced itself as the greater good, and the tau worlds realised that their human inhabitants had accidentally created a weak warp manifestation of the greater good. Disturbed, they started the mass sterilization to stop what they viewed as a disgusting disgrace. When the rest of the tau found out, they were even more disgusted by the sterilization, and stopped it as fast as possible.

When I did that Necron mission where the Necrons won't stop blabbering about my troops going to their deaths and them taking our souls etc, I decided to give them the middle finger about it and used only drones and nothing but drones for the entire mission. Didn't loose a single infantry man, nor any crewed vehicles. Drowned the Necrons in an endless tide of lifeless metal automatons, basically mocking them. Was very enjoyable. Also when I got to the Chaos shrine mission where a khorne daemon demands you spill more blood than your opponent to win it's favour (and the province), I decided I had no interest in that kooky crap or following a Daemon's orders either. This was late in the campaign, and so I had nearly the full roster of honour guard units on hand. I sent them straight to the enemy base without delay, and spent all of my starting eco on units with no intention to sustain any income or expansion. Showed the enemy what that decisive "killing blow" philosophy stuff is about, destroyed the enemy base and completed the mission with as little blood spilled as possible, long before the blood quota was remotely filled. Ain't no Tau got time for that.
