Met Hendry once. Late 90s when I was a courier, I used to deliver to a place in Stirling that his manager Ian Doyle was a partner in. Just so happened one day I'd dropped in with a delivery and Hendry was there. Terrific player, in my opinion the best of all time.

As a kid born in 92 I only really saw Hendry towards the end of his reign and for some reason was drawn to him unaware of his record, even more than O’ Sullivan who I lived near and was a fellow Essex boy (went to school with his cousin). Formula 1 is my favourite sport but snooker has always been right up there and I liken Ronnie to Ayrton Senna - probably the most naturally gifted individual ever to partake in the sport but flawed in mentality and would make mistakes in the pursuit for greatness. Hendry is Michael Schumacher. Absolutely ruthless, would do anything to win and had a craft of the game that was just unbeatable when he was on his day.

To do in any match would be impressive but to do it in the world championship final was so impressive and showed what the meaning of the will to win and refuse to be beaten was absolutely amazing but to do it in the Final of the world championships is one thing, but to do it to a player like Jimmy White was just truly exceptional. He definitely had ice running through his veins back then and a will to win that was unrivaled. That brown he played dead weight to land on the yellow was exactly what John Virgo described it as "THE bravest shot he'd ever seen" because if he missed that Jimmy would of potted the yellow and would of went 15-8 up and only needing 2 frames to win but he showed nerves of steel and that ultimately became the turning point in the match. Truly exceptional and to see how young he looked compared to all the rest of the pro's was incredible to actually see because I was born in 1980 and I couldn't remember that, but on your debut match when you've just turned pro at 16 and to turn round and say that he'd be champion within the next 5 years was astonishing and he did it and won the world title on the 5th year of turning pro was ludicrous, amazing, brilliant and all the other words you can think of, and he's still the youngest world champion ever today ,and considering he didn't lift a cue until the age of 13 is remarkable. Ronnie had been playing since he was 4 and interviewed at 12 because he was making centuries at 12 just shows Stephen Hendry's achievements were all the more impressive than I thought!!! And he absolutely dominated the 90's and Ronnie, John Higgins and Mark Williams (the class of 92) didn't win their first world titles until the mid 2000s. If they had of won within 5 years like Hendry did, it would of been 1998 but they couldn't beat Hendry in his prime, and I love all 3 of them players but to be considered the greatest of all time you have to beat and take the reigning GOAT'S title. It's not like Ali or Tyson because they never fought, so it's subjective. Whereas Hendry played all the class of 92 and was none of them took his crown until Hendry got older and was on the decline, and none of the 92 class including Ronnie couldn't dethrone Hendry in their first 10 years never mind 5 years the way Hendry did. I admire Ronnie so much because he is a genius but he consistently says that he would of much preferred to dominate the sport winning almost everything in 10 years than win his 7 titles over 25 years and that's why he says all the time that Hendry was a different animal altogether and was an absolute winning machine and that's why Hendry is the GOAT. Now Ronnie has way more fans than Hendry ever had because he's English and from London and Jimmy White was the same but Ronnie's fans say he's the GOAT but can you argue with Ronnie when he himself says Hendry's the GOAT, I think you have to listen to Ronnie because Ronnie didn't dethrone Hendry while they were playing at the same time and that's why it's not subjective like Ali vs Tyson because that never happened but Hendry played Ronnie and still kept dominating the 90's and early 2000s. Hendry maybe didn't have the flair like Ronnie or Jimmy but he had something better and that was domination of a sport for more than a decade!!!

And the 147 in the Final frame against Ronnie was something special too,to make a 147 maximum is hard enough but to do it to Ronnie that had won the last 5 frames I think to tie the game and then Hendry after sitting in his seat with hardly a pot for nearly an hour and then come out in the Final frame and make a 147 maximum to win the tournament is beyond incredible

Stephen Hendry, in his peak years was the most brutal player of all time. His focus was way above the others. He stayed in the zone 100% of the time. He had this ice cold stare, like an assassin. He couldn't wait to destroy his opponents. Hendry dominated snooker for a decade like no other player has ever done.

From 87-96 Hendry won 17 Majors and 66 professional 1 man tournaments and from January 97 -2005 Hendry won 9 tournaments and it is NOT a Coincidence that when the class of 92 were getting older than Hendry lost more semi finals in 4 years than in the first 10 years of his career and he also lost more Finals from January 97 to 2005 which was the year of his last tournament victory of his career.When asked by Steve Davis why did he think he lost his very high standard of play in the late 80s to 1996 he didn't mention his cue more than once because we all know the saying"A Bad Toolsman blames his tools". Hendry said that the pressure of the class of 92s improvements were much bigger than His Own and by the start of 97 they were in control and if you look at it Hendry did well for the first 4/5 years but after that he couldn't really compete with them anymore hence since January 97.....Hendry won 9 tournaments,Williams has won 35, Higgins has won 52 and O'Sullivan 76 although you can take maybe 4 each from the class of 92 because they did win tournaments even in there first 4 years.Hendry is and will always be a Snooker legend and imho he's going to be the conversation of top 5 players of all time with O'Sullivan number 1 for the next 10-20 years without much doubt now as thiñgs stand.

Ronnie is only 7 years younger but couldnt touch Hendry in the WC at his peak. Hendry was frozen out for 2 years he still has the fortitude to come back and win another 2 WC's. To put it into perspective Ronnie has as of 2023 only won 2 WC titles back to back. Also after a career of 31 years Ronnie only has 3 more ranking titles than Hendry and that's with plenty more available than in Hendrys era. Hendry would have won plenty more if available. 23 years in the top 16 and 9 seasons at no.1, 29 matches unbeaten at the crucible. As Steve Davis said, 'Ronnie Greatest player, Hendry Greatest winner'.

People always say O'Sullivan and other natural talents have a mental strength problem though, maybe their natural talent and flair is because they don't have a super competitive edge about them?, which allows to express this flair and fluidity? they ain't stifled by being nervous and anxious about winning or losing. O'Sullivan doesn't have a mental problem either anyway, you don't win 6 world titles, 7 uks and god knows how many master titles if you have no mental strength. All the bravado and stupidity is mind games I thought people would have sussed him by now. The "no cue action" b0llocks during the world championships is proof of this.

This is my comment above regarding O'Sullivan, the reason he's still competing and winning is because he doesn't care about winning and losing, his natural talent gets him there rather than having to grind away match after match ala Selby,, Selby had a 2 year slump in form because his competitive edge went away and his natural ability simply isn't good enough on its own, his game is based around being super tight and having a mental will of a granite, take that away and he starts losing 1st round matches a lot. As you say fully dedicated people fall away quicker once the mind has had enough of it, Hendry said after the 7th it was job done... and he barely won anything after 2001, he wasn't that old he was still in his early 30s. 2002 final he was only 32,, mentally burned himself out through the 90s.

I saw him win a match at Preston from behind against god know years ago and I told my lad to go and get his autograph on his tickets. Stephen of course would always sign stuff and he won't remember but as he was signing he was shaking like a leaf, coming from behind and winning meant that much to him. I think Peter Ebdon summed it up A Killing Machine - despite snooker changing a good bit since Hendry retired in 2012 - i think there are more ranking tournaments smaller tournaments etc hence why a couple of good players probably managed to make a century of centuries.. but even if that hadn't happened O'sullivan was probably going to take most of his records eventually so long as he kept playing. But it is still amazing that hendry's record of 16 centuries at the Crucible still stands some 18 years on ( Dings record which includes qualifiers can be disregarded from the start of tournament proper he only had 15 even after making the final) and that 7 centuries in a 10 frame match still hasn't been beaten yeah Ding Dong/Dudd Trump again got seven but that was in the longer frame matches at the crucible

loved snooker way back in the 80s a higgins fan, when the ginger robot appeared, and he was a robot with zero personality or humanity, with his brilliant, but calculating boring game, we knew alex could not beat him, or jimmy. but then this wee scottish lad appeared, he was fearless, all out attack on the table, he in his own way was a robot, but he was our robot, though he played like higgins in a way. to watch him destroy the davis era was a joy to behold, with attacking snooker.

When they played, Hendry and Steve davis I hated them but now, I’m absolutely a fan of them both. They’re both very funny guys, especially Steve Davis. The greatest player of all time has to be Hendry, he absolutely schooled Ronnie in those world semis.

Lots of people comparing hendry to o Sullivan. We all know o Sullivan is the most naturally gifted player ever. But hendry and Steve Davis In their prime could have beaten anyone. And I think o Sullivan doesn’t always have the winning mentality that the other two had.
