I love the duality of the characters. Mark is severed because he wants to escape the wreck that killed his wife, only for his innie to work with her (at least until she was removed), Helena is severed to promote the severance program and how wonderful it is, while her innie rebels against it and expresses her dislike of the program, and Irving seems to be severed as a way to gain access inside Lumon and expose the company which may or may not be connected to his dad, while his innie was the biggest worshipper on the severed floor.

Late to the party, but something I haven't seen anyone point out is the meaning of the name "Kier". It means "little dark one" and I think this was a deliberate choice by the writers to contrast with the name "Lumon". Perhaps whatever secret they uncover involves the original founder which might tie in to the purpose of the company.

The weirdest part of Ms. Cobel is she encouraged outtie Mark to quit when he mentioned he was thinking of a big life change. If she wanted to recouple the 2 versions wouldn’t she want him to stay in the company longer so she could continue to test and refine the process? We also know this entire thing was totally off book, she said she was trying something new with Ms. Casey so I’m not sure Lumon knew she wants to restore memories. Edit: She also goes to extreme lengths like removing the chip from a dead guy at his own funeral to try and learn more about reintegration. Relearning memories and restoring a dead person might be a rogue mission she’s on, or Lumon already knows she doesn’t.

Unfortunately though when it came to Lost it all ended up being under false pretense, but it was exciting as it was initially going on, when we figured the writers had solutions in mind, but it's not difficult to see that this show already knows the story it wants to tell, so I have no worries going forward. What Lost did is the most egregious thing a show has ever done to a fan base before. It's one thing if a show just ends up going down hill, the writing gets crappy and fails or whatever, but to build a bunch of what seem to be really cool mysteries, but they're not, because they have no solutions in mind, but if they continue dangling the carrot they'll keep you interested and by the time you find out that you were scammed it doesn't matter because they already got your ratings. I realized what they were doing I want to say sometime around the 3rd/4th season, but I couldn't believe that their were people who watched the show up until the finale' thinking they would get answers on the mystery elements (the human element is the only storyline that ultimately works). The show excelled in the area that the writers had in mind when they created the show. People stuck on an island in which each person has their own inner struggles to work out... also many of the people are spiritually connected if you will (soul mates, living multiple lives together)... and upon working through and fixing your inner struggles you move on (it's the whole Buddhist thing), but the network needed more, so that's where they forced the mystery element into the story which was the scam in between the human element.

Maybe the people on his map were past friends? Or maybe he's been working with Petey. Petey was probably his real best friend. These wellness sessions could also test to see if the chips are working. That's why he loses points when he gets excited. He's been reset before like Ms. Casey. That's why Mark was sent to wellness to make sure his chip is still working to see if that candle triggered him or even Ms. Casey did. These wellness checks measures the chips integrity.

Severance has been one of my favourite shows in a long time! I was a massive fan of Lost. I loved that feeling of not knowing what was going on, but trying to reason it out and form theories. I've watched many shows since that have tried to capture that same air, but lacked the courage to really commit to it, so they failed. This is, I think, the first show since Lost that has given me that same reaction.

Guys, Casey's body is put on sleep mode, she went to a dark room (red arrow elevator) similar to what Irving was drawing in his paintings. There are 2 theories here, either Gemma didn't die, but I doubt that because I think they buried her, maybe Lumon faked it, or that's not actually Gemma it is a clone, and that's explain why they cant let her go outside and live her outtie's because she is dead, so they put her in sleep mode and trick her into thinking she has a life out there (she was asking Mr. Mel-chick about it). Although I don't like the idea that she is dead because that will break my heart 💔💔.

Did anyone ever address Helena's father directly onscreen? His voice almost echoes while her voice remains steady throughout the bathroom scene. Are we to believe that the acting CEO, also assuming he's the voice on the box, would be standing alone in the back of the room during the largest press conference in the company's history? I think we're being sixth-sensed or technoghosted. He even makes it apparent that this is the first time he's spoken to his daughter since her inny's attempted suicide.

Helena the outie knows about her coworkers including Mark. When he almost hits her with his car leaving work in an early episode, she says 'keep your eyes on the icy road' so that implies she knows Mark was driving when his wife 'died' in the accident . Miss Selvey is so interested in Mark to see if she can prove it can be reversed by him remembering his wife or by her remembering him. That's why she keeps pushing those wellness sessions on him.
@arlentan2 жыл бұрын
I like that about Helena's choice of words to Mark. Knowing the show is very carefully written, I was trying to pick up if there was anything in that one sentence her Outie said to Mark. It would indeed make sense if he did kill his wife in a car accident driving on an icy road.
@rayzala13932 жыл бұрын
I think Miss Selvey's interest in Mark and Ms.Casey goes deeper than simple curiosity. Remember when she destroys her Kier shrine when she is fired? (episode 8) When she's done she lies there crying while holding what looks like Lumon feeding tubes that have a label "Charollete, Cobel" Date of birth Mar,17, 1944". My guess is that like Ms.Casey (Gemna) Cobel's mother had the severance procedure done before she died so they could preserve her 'soul.' But when Ms.Cobell went to meet her mother's severed state she didn't even recognize her. So Ms.Cobell is experimenting on Ms.Cassey to try to get her to recognize Mark and break through severance because that means she could do the same with her mother and reunite. The clues are all there. How she goes from enchanted by their wellness session to angry in a moment. How she brings up her mom time and time again. Second season is going to be amazing!

with season 2 i can't see Mark going back right away mainly because his sister knows a lot about everything now so she would probably force him to stay away. also he was thinking about leaving anyway so when he finds out all this knew information i would think he would be less likely to go back. there is his wife of course but i doubt his sister will have realised what he was yelling about so that probably won't be a factor. i'd guess at least in the Beginning of season 2 we will only see Mark on the outside and maybe he will be taking part in the protests we have seen.

The smart move for the company once the people were turned back to themselves is to prevent them from working there again. It would kill the portion of themselves that worked for the company thus they would have nothing to complain about….the company could say it was for downsizing. It broke my heart that part of Mark’s wife was still alive and a part of her enjoyed being with him…then for the company to take away her little bit of joy she had while awake. I think she needed more testing to wipe away any feelings she had around Mark. I think this is all a test to let rich people live forever in healthy bodies or people who recently died.

For Irving, PTSD seems like the logical choice, right? It’s our default response when considering members of the military & the issues they may face, understandably. But what if Irving was a secret agent or assassin for the CIA. They either don’t want him remembering the “jobs” he did. But also a thought 💭- what if discovering his homesexuality was an issue for either the military branch he served &/or against the Eagan plan? Is an attempted reprogramming of one’s sexuality on the “to do list” as well? There’s so many places it could go & a major part of what makes Severance so fascinating 🧐

The show rarely went slow for me. I was entrenched from the start. The middle of the season lags a little bit. The Irving Burt storyline is the most dragging storyline especially on a re-watch. I don't think it drags because of this, but I think they liked the idea of getting a big name like Christopher Watkins more then getting a fitting casting for that role. At no point do I feel the chemistry between those two. Burt looks like a geriatric patient, whereas Irving looks to be a couple decades younger even though we're likely going to find out that he was born in the early 1900's, but maybe it's due to cloning, who knows. The Irving/Burt storyline is essential for Irvings story arc and snapping out him out of his obedience, but the execution was a little off is all. Also Marks Date/s with Alexa dragged on a little longer than necessary.
@Henrique.Souza0601 Жыл бұрын
I found it funny because the 9 episodes IMHO went super fast plotwise, however I agree with you that sometimes it's painful to watch. Some scenes I completely skipped, almost all the ones with music in the background and useless stuff happening on the screen. Guess the writers forced their hands into the "metaphorical" stuff and also to some details that don't fit in a 1st season of a show, like almost all the Irving/Burt conversations that set up the scene for Irving to start questioning the whole thing, or the dates with Alexa that shows Mark is a regular guy, just with a recent trauma and a very weird job, but both take a lot more time than I felt was necessary. However, even disliking a few parts, thinking that a TV show is usually intended to be 3 seasons + long, I thought the plot moved pretty fast for 1 season, we already found out a lot to develop some plausible theories like their floor being just a big test of the chip and their innies (IDK if this is the corretly spelling lol) being on the outside for the first time. I think that what I liked the most that kept me watching even with this painfully slow moments are the clever ideas to put Mark's allegedly dead wife to work at Lumon and also having Helly to be an Eagan with heavy beliefs, just like her innie's, but on the opposite side. I mean... Wow! Talk about self sabotage hahaha

she’s clearly some sort of zombie/un-dead experiment. And they are lying to her, I think she is in fact dead and has no outie. The question is, is she a clone? Or did they literally dig her body out of the grave, cover it up and start doing experiments on her inside lumon….pretty freaky shit when you think about it.

Best show I've seen since Counterpart. Which this show reminds me a lot of. If you lile severance you'd probably also lile Counterpart. Similar them with mysterious and highly secretive work, not idea what's really going on and the board member is not known, only communicated through computer messages which prevents employees knowing who they are. Also really underrated like this show is. I dont understand why this show isnt more popular, I'm saying this based on the amount of channel doing reviews and recaps each episode, but at least this had more discussion than counterpart. There really aren't many shows that can engage you the way severance had. The last 2 episode is just wow. Constantly at the edge of my seat and the whole episode felt so short.
@aaronsoto13462 жыл бұрын
Here’s the issue with Marks motivation. He’s trying to get time where he doesn’t think about his wife passing but through severance, now he doesn’t get a break from it at all. Through work you can at least focus on other things that you have to do but since he’s always on the outside it’s nonstop. I guess you could say he’s getting a break by essentially taking away 1/3 of his life. But it doesn’t really make sense to me.
@LibertyRapsher2 жыл бұрын
It makes perfect sense. If you've ever been in a really low place in your life, you look forward to sleep because you could check out for 6-8 hours where you don't have to feel anything and then you wake up and you're back to your miserable place and if you could you'd check out longer. So he's not taking a break from life persay, he's removing a portion of his painful everyday life. It's kind of like a partial suicide. After his wife died he tried to go back to work, but apparently it didn't go well. The severance process allows him to maintain a job and support himself as well. But if one in Marks mental state had a long term goal of getting better, this would be counter productive to healing, because that removes 8 of time that would bring one closer to healing, however most people in that state don't see the silver lining of eventual healing, they're too in the moment. Even his sister tells him, checking out 8 hours a day is not the same thing as heeling.
@GRA5S Жыл бұрын
It makes sense to me. The thought of forgetting the tragic death of his wife 8 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week is what convinced him into going through severance. He will not remember it but he knows he won't be tormented by PTSD while he was in there, he was hoping he'll be happy or at least not depressed while he's at work. If only he knew he traded one torture to another.
@dantepierre1948 Жыл бұрын
Well his sister said he was a school teacher and that he was having breakdowns at school which obviously is not gonna work out very well. He’s not trying to get time where he doesn’t have to think of her…he just wants to be able to work a job without the pain of his wife’s death as a distraction. Get it???
