I think the newspaper was faked just for the Innies. The language of the article is very juvenile, and it's just reeks of some propaganda fluff-piece. It's like "look how good you guys did, you're heroes now! So stop complaining and be compliant". They used Ricken's name because Innies idolize him - "look, this guy you think of as a revolutionist anti-work hero is on our side actually! So get in with the programming!". I'm so hyped for the new season!

Totally agree, at first I was thrown when I noticed Ricken's "book" about letting Kier in. But of course, it screams manipulation as Ricken is effectively the only non-innie/management person that they've ever heard of. Lumon will be desperate to try to paint Ricken as a "child of Kier" rather than someone who will awaken a revolution

totally, the whole thing feels completely made up for the innies. They would have no idea what is true or not.

@@christhomasson1148 yeah, also the fact that Ricken said that Mark has made a controversial decision: "ethically and socially, morally and scientifically". I think it happened during their non-dinner in the first episode. I don't think he would endorse Kier. Yes, his book is self-help nonsense, but he has quite an anti-capitalist mindset just based on the quotes we hear in the episodes.

@@workhardtiger that's right! Episode one's "non-dinner" dinner party. That whole scene painted the severance procedure as a very hot topic and controversial subject. Like you say, Ricken comes across as extremely sceptical about the whole process, yet supports Mark as he's family. Everything about Ricken comes across as non-conformist and very alternative/anti-establishment. Little things like his "every bed" or "hanging of the kelp" are really hippy-like behaviours. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Ricken was involved in the severance protest movements. However, I do have some suspicions about Ricken's group of friends. Their behaviour is so bizarre that it makes me wonder if they are in fact, permanently severed. Let me explain (this will be a long winded comment, please bear with me haha): So unrelated, I believe Cobel is severed and is permanently an "innie". How and why this happened, I'm not clear about. Although the evidence points to her being severed. Cobel has sworn allegiance to Kier and the values, despite no other "outies" being shown to have this allegiance - with the only people shown to be devout to Kier being innies, particularly Irvine's Innie. I'm unsure if perhaps she started as a severed employee, then got promoted to management allowing her Kier-allegient Innie to take over permanently, or if she immediately had her Innie take over from the moment of severance. The principles, values and teaches of Kier, are all pretty strange, and to an normal Outie, would be difficult to buy into. However, for Innies, they easily buy into this cult-like regime since it's all they know. This would make it extremely easy to control the population, if people were severed (especially without their knowledge), to blindly follow along. The fact that Cobel doesn't switch to an Innie while at Lumon, and stays the same person on the outside - while also swearing full allegiance to Kier - tells me she must be a permanent Innie. There's more to fuel this theory too. As we know, Innies are extremely child-like in nature, due to not having any life experience. Cobel's "performance" on the outside as "Ms Selvig" is so bizarre that it reminds of a child "acting" how they believe an adult would act. Her really strange dialogue, and jokes such as the one about "Jack Frost's dandruff" is so weird. To me, this is the fresh, child-like Innie who's acting how they "imagine" a normal Outie would act - maybe they've been through some form of training course about how to appear "normal", yet it still feels off. This begs the question, why would she be severed? This is the part I'm unsure about and there're several possibilities. It could be that she volunteered for the procedure due to a personal tragedy like Mark (the medical equipment on her shrine in the basement). Maybe she didn't know her severance was going to be permanent - which would possibly explain why she is so determined to prove reintegration as she wants to bring her Outie life's back. Or perhaps she had no idea at all that she was going to be severed, meaning since then, her Innie has realised this and again, her obsession with reintegration begins. Possibly she was aware the Innie would take complete control when she was headhunted for the management role (again, possibly due to personal tragedy, she was a willing participant). Or maybe her Outie self decided to swear allegiance to Kier on her own free will, and permanent severance is a kind of "levelling up" within the cult in which you become severed - therefore becoming a devout Innie servant. Regardless of why she became severed, I believe she's trying to prove reintegration, so as to save her Outie who's currently in permanent limbo. I think in season 2, she'll end up an ally to our group as they all may well have the same goal. Anyway, this brings me back to Ricken's group of friends, and the wider Kier population as a whole. I believe Ricken's friends are severed, and living as permanent Innies. Their behaviour, and language hints at this. I also believe they are entirely unaware of their (and their friends) severance. The biggest example of this is the final episode. When the black dude (don't know if when ever gets his name), finds Eleanor, he proclaims "I found your baby. I found your child. I'm the one who found her". That screams Innie-behaviour to me. It's very child-like to want credit for something, and this really isn't the way an adult would act. There's also Becca in the same episode, talking about how she has hives on the back of her head from her bird pecking her - wtf Becca? That's such a bizarre statement. There's also a number of comments during the "non-dinner" dinner party in EP1. Such as the Black dude asking why no-one called WW1 "world war one" at the time, with others agreeing, before Mark confusingly explains that WW2 hadn't happened yet. That's a huge Innie red flag right there. If they are all severed, why? Well, control. An Innie is far easier to control than an Outie. Meaning you could easily manipulate them into voting certain ways, accepting certain jobs, while rejecting certain ideas and non-Kier adjacent principles. Now, the counter for them being severed is that they all seem quite anti-severance during the dinner table discussion. However, I feel that actually reinforces this theory. I believe they are severed without their knowledge. It could be something that happens to the residents of Kier as a kind of "holy communion" type thing but maybe performed in adulthood. If this is the case, then it makes sense for them to fear severance, as they will be intentionally fear mongered into avoiding ever trying to apply for a severed position - as they are already severed. This could all be a stretch of course. And there are some major counters to this theory - such as, why were Mark and Devon not severed to permanent Innies? To that, I'd theorise that both Mark and Devon aren't originally from the town, whereas Ricken's group are Kier natives. Or perhaps their original jobs made the procedure potentially risky since them suddenly switching to an Innie, would be noticeable (especially for a history professor that Mark was). Perhaps their parents weren't followers of Kier either, and hence this communion/procedure wouldn't be done to them. There's also the kids protesting severance, the punk gig attendees, and Petey's family who are all clearly not severed. This tells me that Lumon doesn't have full control of the Kier residents, yet will have a large percentage permanently severed, who will be devout followers. Anyway, a huge reply in which I've thrown up a big theory in the form of text. If you do read this, I'd be curious of your thoughts on this as I liked how you picked up on the faked newspaper and wonder if you have also wondered about theories similar to these.

I think it is definitely faked due to how they refer to them by their innie names, Helly R. especially so given she is a known person, Helena Eagan.

I don’t know if the show actually is getting more traction, because I alone probably account for a large chunk of that 9.3M 😂

'This is obscene'' -- 'I just want to be sure..'. to me it sounds like Devon is talking about exhuming Gemma's body, or something. To confirm on the outside whether she's dead. And Mark is calling that 'obscene'.

The newspaper photo is just their group work photo photoshopped with a parade & Irv & Dylan switched. The faces & clothes are the same.

If you are exited by early 2025 releases I do recommend Yellowjackets A LOT. Right up your alley. There’s a mystery to solve regarding a plane crash that stranded a female high school football team in the 80s for over a year in the wilderness. Really top of the shelf stuff.

The chubby guy that says "...will be remembered as one of the greatest moments of this planet" (played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) is the same talking to Helena in the shot at @30:14 so he's probably telling that to her. I have a theory that there are many more of the characters that are severed, including Cobel, Milchick, Graner, Natalie and even Ricken, Rebek, Patton as they all act and speak weird, while Devon, Alexa and June act more normal. Remember the severance procedure has been available for about 20 years, since Helly is 30 and her father talks about when she was little what she said about the chips. Also we know there are different "modes" of severance, so these people may be severed permanently, in the outside, which may tie with the numbers. Also Ricken being severed could mean that at least part of him is collaborating with Lumon, and the book could be planted (the language in the book itself seems written by a severed person).

I think it’s the color grading that you’re noticing. It’s much darker, less contrast, more monotone. That can sometimes give the impression of using a more expensive lens or camera system.
